Boni eliminated teammate Petroni from 8-ball

Gianluca Boni (ITA) has just ousted his teammate „Fabulous“ Fabio Petroni (ITA) from the 8-ball competition at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies in Tirana, Albania, with 7:6.

Actually, Petroni was the clear favored player in this match. He does have a history in international pool, including two silver and two bronze medals that go as far back as 1998 where he lost the final in 9-ball to win the silver medal. Boni is more or less an uncharted territory in international pool.

Kristiansen grabs first Gold Medal in the seniors

In the final match of the straight pool competition at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies in Tirana, Albania, Vegar Kristiansen (NOR) defeated Sandor Tot (HUN) with 100:64 and took the first Gold Medal of the event.

The contestants of the final match were practically a logical conclusion regarding the flow of the straight pool tournament. Tot as well as Kristiansen have both played rock solid and performed steadily most of the time. Though Tot lost his first match to Sanne Azar (SWE), his overall performance in straight pool was worth a Champion. So was Kristiansen’s acting. Naturally, the final was expected to be a great show.

Tkach and Sniegocki win the Euro-Tour

Kristina Tkach (RUS) and Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) just snatched the titles of the Dynamic Billard Albanian Open and the women’s tournament in Tirana, Albania.

The final match between Sniegocki and Joshua Filler (GER) was not as close as predicted. In an interview before the match, both played showed immense respect for the other one and they both agreed that the match will become a close affair. But it turned out that Sniegocki was a bit better in the final than Filler. Though they both did not commit too many mistakes, Sniegocki solved the tricky situations better than Filler and handled them more efficiently. This gave him an advantage over his German opponent which in the end lead to a clear 9:4 victory for Sniegocki.

Austria's Albin Ouschan wins the 2016 World 9-ball Championship with an emphatic 13-6 win over American Shane Van Boening

Austria’s Albin Ouschan knew coming into today’s semi-finals and finals at the World 9-ball Championship that just about everything in his personal and professional pool playing life was going just about perfect. But even he couldn’t have imagined the dream day he just conjured up on the way to winning pool’s most prestigious prize.

After first blowing out Canada’s Alex Pagulayan in the semi-final, Ouschan came back to put an emphatic and somewhat shocking 13 – 6 drubbing on American Shane Van Boening to capture his first WPA World 9-ball championship in front of over 400 people at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha.

The victory was all the more sweet for the 25 year old Austrian because just two years ago, he placed second to the Netherland’s Niels Feijen in this very same arena. Ouschan took that loss hard, but true to his disciplined and hard working nature, he sucked up the pain of defeat and came back better for it. Over the last two years took his game to new heights, including winning the brutally tough China Open in 2015, a successful stint on the winning European Mosconi Cup team, and wins and high finishes in many European events. And he had a baby with his girlfriend and found a peace of mind that he had never known.

This week in Doha this combination of the professional and personal all came together to form an impenetrable force that would let nothing get in the way of success. Over the last six days Ouschan played exceptional and steady pool, and brushed off the inevitable mistakes. He executed every facet of the game to perfection. He stayed calm under pressure. And once he took a lead, he never, ever relinquished it, right up to the very last 9-ball that won him the world title.

For Van Boening, the rout in his second straight World 9-ball Championship final has to be one of the most bitter defeats of his illustrious career. Last year the American played brilliant pool throughout the event, only to stumble in the last half of the final and watch Taiwan’s Ko Pin Yi win the title.

Pagulayan, Ouschan, Van Boening and Cheng form an epic semi-final cast gunning for pool glory at the World 9-ball Championship

After a week of what has arguably been one of the most highly competitive tournaments in World 9-ball Championship history, the field in Doha has been whittled down to what can only be described as the Fantastic Four. And if fans think the play so far has been more than stellar, wait until Thursday when action commences for the final sprint towards pool’s most prestigious prize.

No matter which of the four corners one looks, fans will see greatness ready to do battle. In one Semi-final, Austria’s Albin Ouschan, a runner up here in Doha two years ago, the current China Open champion, and one of the planet’s best players, will clash with Canadian-Filipino veteran Alex Pagulayan. Pagulayan, a true master of the game, won this very event in Taiwan in 2004, and after fading away from pool for several years, has recently rekindled his love of competitive 9-ball. Proof of this came in the US where Pagulayan has won the last two Master of the Table titles at the prestigious Derby City Classic in Indiana.

In the other semi-final, the USA’s Shane Van Boening, a runner up here last year and a four time US Open champion, is streaking towards another another crack at glory. But in his way stands Taiwan’s Yushuan Cheng, who currently holds the US Open crown and is playing absolutely dominating pool.

Four top class players. Four ambitions gunning for the pool world’s biggest title. Something has to give and it certainly will on Thursday at the Al Arabi Sports Club in blazing hot Doha. Both semi –finals, which will be race to 11, alternate break, will be played concurrently and will commence at 11am(GMT +). The Final, which will be race to 13, alternate break, will begin at 3pm.

With this kind of talent level ready to square off on the final day, it might seem near impossible to predict who will emerge the king of 9-ball come Thursday evening. Certainly, however, one could easily make the case for the American Van Boening to be the favorite.

Portugal joins the World Cup of Pool in October

In an exciting final match, team Portugal consisting of Rui-Edgar Franco and Joao Grilo have won the qualification tournament in Tirana, Albania, for this year’s World Cup of Pool. They have outplayed team Hungary with Gabor Solymosi and Gabor Antal 8:4.

On their road to glory, Portugal had some heavyweights to eliminate. Yesterday, they started with triumphs over North Cyprus 2 with 8:5, then Slovakia 8:6 and finally Croatia 2 with 8:6 which took them into the quarter-finals against Switzerland today.

Switzerland was a high class opponent with Euro-Tour regulars Dimitri Jungo and Ronald Regli on the team. But Portugal prove to be better and pipped the Suisse team 8:6 in a close encounter. Then, they went on and took down team Croatia 1 with Ivica Putnik and Tomislav Susic 8:4 before they entered into the final match against Hungary.

Team Hungary had made their way over Slovakia 8:5 (Jakub Koniar & Balasz Koles) and Belarus 1 (Uladzislau Shopik & Uladzislau Tsyrykau) with 8:5 today.
Team Portugal will now go to the main event, Matchroom’s World Cup of Pool, which will be held in October 8-14, 2016, in China. The exact venue will be published shortly. Team Hungary will be the first substitutes in case one of the nominated teams cannot attend the event.

Red hot Brit Jayson Shaw and American Shane Van Boening barge into the final 16 at the 2016 World 9-ball Championship

After an unpredictable day of world class pool, the 2016 WPA World 9-ball Championship has come down to the last 16 competitors. From here the pressure and drama is guaranteed to be ramped up, as the remaining players can suddenly see the golden prize, pool’s ultimate and most prestigious crown. The round of 16 and the quarterfinals will take place on Wednesday. The semi-finals and final will be held on Thursday.

And what a race to the mountain top of pool it will be. The final 16 still standing comprise an amazing mix of players from nearly every pool playing region. Some of those still present represent the current and old guard, while a slew of them embody the strong youth movement in the sport of pool. The only thing we know for sure is that we will crown a brand new champion come Thursday evening.

Great Britain’s Jayson Shaw today made an excellent case for some seriously good odds being placed on the affable Scotsman. Shaw came into this year’s championship playing the best pool of his career. In Doha, the 26 year old had to come from the loser’s side in the group stages, and in his first match in today’s round of 64, he was paired up against none other than defending champion Ko Pin Yi.

Shaw never flinched and looked as cool as the Al Arabi Sports Club air conditioning out on the TV table. Breaking well and playing excellent safeties, the Brit surprisingly waltzed to a comfortable 11-5 win over the fancied Taiwanese.

In the round of 32 Shaw then had to face another monster in the Philippines’ Dennis Orcollo, who had just come from behind to topple Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann, 11 – 8. Again, Shaw was unflappable, coming back from an early deficit to walk away with the match, 11-5.

The Scotsman certainly seems to have that winner’s air about him. Relaxed, focused and clearly having the time of his life, Shaw has all the tools in his bag to advance even further.

“I feel really calm out there,” Shaw said after disposing of Orcollo. “I’m just taking it ball by ball, not thinking ahead, grinding away, stay down on the shot, put the cue straight through the shot, take my time, don’t let it affect me if I make a mistake or two. I’m happy with my performance. Breaking good, safeties are good. When the tournament started my goal was to get to the last 16, and I’ll just carry on from there. Now I’m there. I’m happy, really pleased. Hopefully I can keep the momentum tomorrow and roll on again.”

If you’ve watched enough pool at this level, it quickly becomes clear that being able to let the inevitable stress roll off your back and play without a care in the world is a big key to success. Which means just because Shaw’s next opponent in the round of 16 is hardly a big name, that doesn’t tell him things will get any easier.

Kuwait's Omar Al Shaheen storms into the Final 64 knockout stage with a massive upset of former champion Darren Appleton at the World 9-ball Championship

Omar Al Shaheen knows that success in championship pool is as much about perseverance as it is about being an amazing shot maker. Sometimes, when things aren’t going your way, you just have to be patient. When your time finally does come, you have to be ready to grab the cherry.

Today at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, that cherry came in the form of a brilliantly played match against former World 9-ball Champion Darren Appleton. Today was Judgement Day at the 2016 World 9-ball Championship, the last chance to make it into the Final 64, the knockout rounds and the real road to 9-ball glory.

Of course Appleton, one of pool’s giants, was the heavy favorite. But the 23 year old Kuwaiti played flawlessly and completely carefee, while the Brit couldn’t find the measure of the break shot and looked tight. Al Shaheen won in a master class, 9-5, putting Appleton out, and himself in the money rounds of pool’s biggest event.

To understand just how Al Shaheen got to this point of being able to oust one of pool’s best players, it helps to look back over the last few days. The talented and good looking youngster didn’t even have a spot in the tournament a few days ago. He entered the brutally tough qualifiers last week, reached the finals two times, only to lose to two top players. But as he was lamenting what could have been this year, he got the call that another player had dropped out and, as the leading point holder of the qualifiers, he got the very last spot in the world championship.

Al Shaheen then lost his very first match and was forced over to the losers’ side of his group bracket. But then the Kuwaiti found his groove, handily beating Sweden’s Marcus Chamat, to set up a showdown with Appleton. He suddenly realized all the tough competition and, yes, the losing, had prepared him for this moment.

“I think it’s good that I lost many times,” an ecstatic Al Shaheen said after disposing of Appleton. “In the qualifiers I lost three times, two of them in finals to very good players. In the group stages I lost my first match. So that’s four times. So now I can accept losing. And it was good practice. Today I just play my game and I am relaxed. Darren is a very good player and I feel very good right now.”

31 one other players left the Al Arabi with similar wide grins today as they booked their spots in the Final 64 which begins Tuesday morning here. They join the 32 players who qualified on Sunday in what is a brutally stellar field of pool greats ready to do battle over the next three days for pool’s most prestigious prize.

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe. Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
