Europe storm to another MC victory

TEAM EUROPE won the 2014 PartyPoker Mosconi Cup, beating the USA 11-5 in front of a boisterous crowd at the Tower Circus, Blackpool. The score line was their joint second best winning margin and leaves the Americans with some soul-searching to do as they attempt to get back into competitive shape for the annual transatlantic 9 ball showdown.

Leading 9-5 going into the final session, the Europeans wanted just two points for the glory and two matches were all that were needed as first Darren Appleton beat Shane Van Boening 5-2 and then Nikos Ekonomopoulos did the same by a similar score to seal a one-sided victory for Europe.

For the winning captain, Johan Ruijsink, it was his seventh and last Mosconi Cup in charge and remains undefeated, an astounding record in any sport.

He said, “It is humbling to win again. The players played great and kept their chin up when they had to take something on the chin. In the last couple of matches we played our best pool.

“We knew America would come out with Shane twice and we weren’t afraid but we were aware that if he got going and they had Justin Hall third who has played well this week, they might get some momentum and it is 9-8 and you might be in a bit of trouble.

Europe within two points of five-peat

EUROPE WON three of the four Wednesday night matches to leave themselves four points clear of their American opponents and within two points of their fifth consecutive PartyPoker Mosconi Cup win following a torrid night at the Tower Circus in Blackpool.

The Americans needed a big session as they trailed 6-4 from the previous night but bad rolls and some poor performances ensured that didn’t happen as the Euros increased their vice-like grip on the coveted trophy.

“The Americans are still breaking well but the situations were a bit tougher,” said Euro skipper Johan Ruijsink.

"We didn’t play our best earlier, it was scrappy at the start of the night but if you win scrappy matches that is huge. If you don’t play well but win that hurts the opposition.

“Anything can happen in any match but it would be an ideal plan to immediately step to ten points with Darren tomorrow. We don’t want to be over confident because it is the Mosconi Cup and if they pull one or two matches back we are in trouble again and the pressure is back on us. I’d like to win it in the first three matches tomorrow.”

Europe increase lead but US still fighting

EUROPE INCREASED their lead at the 2014 PartyPoker Mosconi Cup as they won the second session 3-2 to take the overall score to 6-4 with a potential 11 matches to complete. The US though, topped and tailed the session with wins but looked slack in the middle as the Euros asserted themselves with three wins.

Trailing 6-3 going into the final match, it took a moment of magic from Shane Van Boening as he executed a hugely difficult shot to perfection to set up the US win and keep their Mosconi Cup hope alive.

Commented US captain Mark Wilson, “The last point is naturally very important. We ended on a high after struggling through a few matches. We feel good about our chances from here on in.

“Shane’s shot was one of the most gutsy shots you will ever see anybody attempt. You have to be so dedicated with every molecule in your body to come up with a shot like that in a big moment, a big match. He is world-class and it gives all the guys confidence.”

Europe nick early lead after bruising battle

TEAM EUROPE will take a 3-2 into the second day of the PartyPoker Mosconi Cup after an exciting evening’s play at the Tower Circus, Blackpool. Played out in front of a capacity crowd at the Victorian amphitheatre, it was tense stuff from start to finish as the spectators played their part.

Having endured a pounding in Las Vegas last year, the new-look American side got off to a sticky start as they lost the team match but then found their feet to take the lead in the Mosconi Cup for the first time since day two back in 2012.

The evening ended disappointingly for them as their star man Shane Van Boeing took a hit in the two remaining matches to allow Europe to win the session.

Clements take his first Total9ball Title

Total9Ball held its 4th and final Sunday Goldens event on Sunday 30th November at the spectacular Hurricane Room venue in High Wycombe. 22 players took to the tables all hoping to reach the Semi Finals to bag themselves a seeded spot at the Grand Finals held in St Albans in two weeks’ time (Sunday 14th Dec). There was also prize money awarded on the day, a beautiful glass T9B trophy and the prestige of winning a Total9Ball title.

This event was thrown completely open with some of the big guns missing, Courtney Symons, Craig Osborne and Shaun Storry. Who would hit top form and produce the goods at this event?

The format used was group stages into straight knock-out. 22 players were split into two groups of 11, with each player competing in three, race to seven group stage matches. The top six players from each group would advance to the knockout stage. The top two players from each group would be seeded into the Quarter Final stage with the next four players in each group playing off to reach the Quarter Final (prize money) stage.

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

ESPN3 set for US Mosconi blanket coverage

29th November, Blackpool, England - MATCHROOM SPORT can today announce that the 2014 PARTYPOKER MOSCONI CUP will be delivered in its entirety in the US on ESPN3, ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network.

Starting at 2pm EST on Monday 1st December, the Mosconi Cup is the annual Europe v USA 9 ball pool showdown taking place at the iconic Tower Circus in Blackpool, with America intent on revenge after defeat in Las Vegas 12 months ago.

Now in its 21st year, the PartyPoker Mosconi Cup heads to Blackpool for the first time, where sold out record crowds will witness pool’s high-octane answer to the Ryder Cup.

New captain Mark Wilson has assembled a determined and youthful squad of America’s most ambitious pool stars, led by Shane van Boening who has won the US Open in each of the last three years.

The ultimate champions will be the team that reaches 11 points first and play runs from Monday 1st, culminating in a nail-biting finish on the evening of Thursday 4th December.

Up against the Americans will be a European team that has enjoyed six victories in the last seven runnings of the storied event. Packed with champions such as Darren Appleton, Niels Feijen and Karl Boyes, the Euros will start out as favourites.

Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn said, “We’re delighted that ESPN has given sports fans across America the chance to see every ball of every rack of what is without a shadow of a doubt pool’s greatest show.

The Grand Final of Baltic Pool League 2014

The Baltic Pool League 2014 drew to a conclusion this weekend in Riga, Latvia. Once again the kind host was Bams Pool House with 12 brand new Dino Sport Pro tables with very tight pockets and Strachan cloth. It was only 32 best ranked men and 16 best ranked women and oldboys athletes allowed to participate in the final. In the game of 10-ball the hot favourite Estonian Denis Grabe did not let his fans down in men's division and in women's and oldboy's division the final was all about local hero Ojars Blezurs.

Denis Grabe back at the top

This years men's division final was suprisingly dominated by Estonians as three of the four top spots were taken by them. After last years third place finish Denis Grabe surely wanted to regain the title of the best pool player in the Baltics and he did that with style.

DAZZLER DETHRONES MAHARAJA FOR MAIN EVENT TITLE

The 2014 British Grand Prix came down to two of the country’s leading professionals battling it out for the spoils – 2007 World Champion Daryl Peach coming up against defending Southern Masters champion Imran Majid, looking for back to back GB9 main event titles.

Peach began his journey to the final in resounding fashion, sweeping aside Hungary’s Zoltan Kojzsa 9 rack to 1 to take him into the second round of the winners bracket. A much sterner test awaited him here, with leading Spaniard Juan Carlos Exposito taking Peach all the way before succumbing to defeat on the hill. 9-8 saw Peach through to the winners qualifying round where he was to face. In the battle of master and apprentice, it was the apprentice who won through – Burford defeating Peach 9-7 secured his safe passage to the last 16 and put Peach one defeat from elimination. Peach was determined to get to the last 16, but the challenge of Nick Hayes proved a stern one. Peach saw himself home, however, and a 7-5 win was enough to put him back in the hat for the single elimination stage. This saw him draw none other than Phil Burford once again, and revenge was a sweet dish for Peach for it was he who reigned supreme when it mattered. He turned Burford over 9 racks to 5 and lined up a quarter final against fellow Blackpudlian Karl Boyes. A fine match was guaranteed and it was Peach who came out the better, winning 9-7 and putting him into a semi-final against defending Midlands Classic champion Chris Hall. With both looking for their second main event win of the season, they were sure to put on a good show. it was Peach who reigned supreme, however, and he sealed a 9-7 win to put him into the final.
