Poland and Finland in the medals

IN THE last quarter-final match at the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool, Finland extinguished the remaining Filipino hopes as they made light work of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante to run out convincing 9-5 winners and book a semi-final match up against the USA.

The Philippines were never at the races as the huge crowd at Robinsons Place in Ermita were gradually quietened as the Finns began to control the game. Makkonen dogged the 9 ball in the opening rack but after that the youngster seemed to grow in confidence abetted by Immonen.

Finland lead over the early stages but the Filipinos found themselves at 6-5 and still in the match. A ball in hand opportunity for the Finns in the next made the score 7-5 and they took the next two to take the match, Immonen closing it out with a great 7/9 combination.

Commented Immonen, “We’ve already beaten two World Cup of Pool champions and if we keep it together, break well, keep our composure then we have every chance. We’ve had our moments – the last match Petri carried me and tonight I carried him.

“With the crowd here, you have to keep your opponents in their seat and that keeps the crowd quiet. There was a bit of tension in the middle part of the match and we had our moment of doubt, but we made the openings and then closed the door.”

Skowerski & Szewczyk in Pole position to face Italy

UNHERALDED POLISH pair Karol Skowerski & Wojciech Szewczyk crashed the quarter-finals of the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as they outlasted a pedigree Dutch side of Nick Van den Berg and Huidji See, winning 8-6 at Robinson’s Place in Manila.

Pool has been on the rise in Poland over the past five years or so and in addition to these two there are plenty of other top drawer shooters waiting in the wings.

It was all quality in the opening half of the match as the Poles opened up a surprise 3-1 lead including a tidy break and run. The Polish squad was set to go ahead 4-1, having outfoxed the Dutch on a push out and safety battle but with just three balls left on the table Szewczyk missed an easy 6 ball handing a gift to Holland who made it 3-2.

Champs are out as Finns and Pinoys make quarters

THE FIRST two quarter-final spots have been decided at the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as the Finnish pair of Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen ousted defending champions Germany, and then home-town heroes Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante kept Filipino dreams alive as they scored an emotional win over Canada.

At 4-2 up the Canadians looked well set, as Alex Pagulayan and John Morra looked confident in contrast to their opponents who looked under the cosh and under pressure in front of thousands of their countrymen.

Slowly though the tide began to turn as Reyes came with some shots that had the crowd on their feet as Pagulayan missed a couple of critical balls. The big moment came in the 12th rack when, with two balls on the ball, Reyes played a trademarked table length bank on the 8 ball, leaving an easy 9 ball for Bustamante to out the team on the hill.

A dry break with the 1 ball on was not what Bustamante wanted but when Pagulayan dogged an easy 6 ball, it was all over as the huge crowd understandably went nuts. They now play Finland in the quarter-finals.

Commented Reyes: “At the beginning there was too much pressure. My hands were shaking, but when they make a few mistakes I started to feel better and I calmed down. You have to play good against these guys because Canada is good. But Alex make like four mistakes so that’s no good for them.“

On his clutch 8-ball bank in rack 12: “I can’t play safe on that shot. The cue ball is close to the 8-ball and that makes the pocket bigger so it’s better to play offense. I have no choice because there is nowhere to hide the ball.”

Swiss aces stun Manila

IN ANOTHER final rack decider, Team Switzerland came from behind to send one of the pre-tournament favourites Philippines A, consisting of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza, crashing out of the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool by a 8-7 score line and silence a capacity home crowd in Manila.

The Swiss duo of current EPBF No.1 Dimitri Jungo and his partner Ronni Regli, created a big upset last year at this event when they KO’d defending champions China in their opening match, but on this type of form they look a fair bet to beat anyone.

Regli, based in Zurich is half Filipino and a bit of an unknown as he no longer pursues a full time pool career, while Jungo from Bern is a former WPA Junior World Champion.

“It’s a very big win for us. It’s great to win here. I have mixed feelings because I’m part Filipino and I have a piece of this country. I know they all want a Filipino to win but a Filipino did win,” said Regli.

Old stagers Django and Bata Two delight full house

DOUBLE PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool champions Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante (Philippines B) are on course for a third title as they disposed of Hong Kong hopes Lee Chenman and Kenny Kwok in front of a huge, enthusiastic crowd of locals at Robinsons Place in Manila.

The Hall of Famers have won this event twice before – in 2006 in Newport, Wales and in 2009amidst chaotic scenes Manila – and they never looked in any danger as they overwhelmed the opposition.

At ages 58 and 48 respectively, they may not quite be the players they once were but they will be very hard to beat in front of the vast crowds they attract in their home country and only a foolish man would back against them.

Lee Chenman - Team Hong Kong

“Efren played really good today. He controlled the cue ball really well. When Efren controls the cue ball, there’s nobody who can beat him. But this is doubles, 9-ball, short races, so anyone can win. But if we can start breaking good, we got a good chance.”

All set for Tuesday’s big break off

DEFENDING PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool champions Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann of Team Germany know they have the right stuff to become the first team to win back to back titles in pool’s premiere scotch doubles event. But as the 32, two-man teams representing 31 nations gear up for what promises to be 6 days of epic showdowns beginning Tuesday in Manila, the German duo finds themselves in a completely different circumstance from last year.

Coming into the 2011 World Cup of Pool in Manila, both players were riding a wave of confidence brought on by individual success. Souquet had come off a massive win in the World Pool Masters only the week prior, his first ever victory in Manila after dozens of tries. Hohmann had just won a big straight pool event in the United States. And the pair was ravenous for doubles gold.

“It was a tournament we really wanted to win,” Souquet said during a press conference Monday in Manila at the Robinson’s Place Mall, the site of the 2012 World Cup of Pool.

“Two years prior to that we felt we should have won against Efren (Reyes) and Django (Bustamante). We kind of felt that that tournament in 2009 was stolen from us. We really wanted to win this event and we were hungry.”

Oslo 10 Ball Open inviting players to register now!

Three tournaments over this long weekend make this an interesting opportunity, especially as there is guaranteed added prize money in each of the events - always good value!

There are two smaller events on the Friday - no elite players are permitted in the 16 player "Slimboy" event, then the field is opened to all comers for the "Fatboy" - a lot of fun should be had by all at these events, and they perform a useful warm-up function for the main event, The Olso Open, on the Saturday and Sunday.

So, if you like 10 Ball, if you like traveling, meeting new people, and then beating them with a stick, contact organiser Egil Arne Sørensen at the email address shown.

Dyno and Nick still in the hot seats

FOLLOWING THE conclusion of the German Open at Brandenburg on the Euro Tour, the top five players on the 2012 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup rankings stay the same with World 9 Ball Champion Darren Appleton top of the pile, closely followed by Nick Van den Berg.

Filling up the next three spots are veteran Oliver Ortmann who is looking to make his ninth Mosconi Cup appearance and first since 2004, Greece's Nikos Ekonomopoulos, who has come out of nowhere in his breakthrough season, and England's Chris Melling, an impressive Mosconi winner last December.

There are still plenty of players in contention for the five team places but big guns like Ralf Souquet and Niels Feijen will have to pull out all the stops if they are to give themselves a chance.
