A Game of Life, Death and All That's Inbetween
Pool… Now that’s always been a massive part of my life.
I’ve loved it and hated it with equal passion over the years… and hate is a very strong word. Loathed it in fact.
However, the fascinating thing that I love about pool is that it draws so many parallels with life. When you’re at the table, YOU are in charge. Kristen Castaldo, a player from Chicago suggested I blog some thoughts I had on these…
The break shot brings the whole darn game to life. Depending on the conditions, a hard break or a cut break opens the rack and good cue ball control sets you up to with a roadmap through “life”. Your next shot ? It's up to you to play aggressive and dominate – or play the percentage, study the lay of the land and be cool, calm, clear-headed, calculating and cruel.
WITH THE PARTYPOKER.NET WORLD CUP OF POOL taking place in Manila from Tuesday to Sunday 7th to 12th September, Matchroom Sport can announce that the USA will be represented by the Nos. 1 & 2 players on the BCA Men’s Point List, Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris.
Morris has played in all four runnings of the World Cup to date including winning the tournament with Shane Van Boening in 2008 and finishing runner-up in the company of Earl Strickland to the Philippines in the event’s inaugural year, 2006.
The tournament features 32 two-player teams from around the world taking aim for a $250,000 prize fund, with the winning pair bagging $60,000 between them.
For Johnny Archer, 41, it will be his World Cup debut, and he is relishing the opportunity of playing in the event.
MATCHROOM SPORT can announce that there will be a European qualifying event offering two spots in the 2010 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool. Taking place on Sunday 11th July at the Sporthotel Alpina in Sankt Johann im Pongau, Austria, the tournament will be open to pairs from nations not otherwise represented in the competition.
Taking place directly after the Austrian Open on the Euro Tour, as in the main event, all matches will be scotch doubles, races to 8, with the winner breaking. The format will be double elimination until the last four and then single elimination.
The Polish team sheet always looked dangerous right from the start when we saw the 16 national teams from all over Europe entered for this Battle Royale event in Kielce, Poland, for the 2010 Nations Cup, and true to form the cream rose to the top after a week of play as Radoslaw Babica's team took the gold medals and trophy in the beautiful Hotel Kongresowy in Kielce, Poland.
Ivica Putnik's Team Croatia had already lost to Poland in the earlier rounds of this double elimination team tournament, and they put up a more robust challenge in the final but it was to no avail and Croatia had to settle for silver medals as Poland romped to victory without loss. Other medalists (bronze) were Team Portugal and Team Poland 2.
THE PARTYPOKER.NET WORLD CUP OF POOL will once again take place in Manila following last year’s hugely successful event in the Philippines. Taking place from Tuesday to Sunday 7th to 12th September, the event will feature 32 two-player teams shooting for a $250,000 prize fund.
Leading the way will be defending champions Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, whose heroics last year lifted the nation as they beat Germany 11-9 in one of the most exciting finals in pool history.
To Respective WPA Confederations, Promoters, and Room Owners:
We would like to request any and all federations structured under the umbrella of the World Pool – Billiards Association (WPA), plus interested room Owners and/or Promoters to submit their interest in hosting/promoting the 2010 or the 2011 WPA World "Artistic Pool" Championship. Each event will take place at an agreeable date to Promoters/Room Owners/Federations that are interested. The sooner all details and dating can be arranged... The better of course for all concerned.
The African Billiard & Snooker Federation (ABSF) has confirmed that snooker and other cue sports will be included in the African Games for the first time when Africa’s ‘Olympics’ are held in Mozambique next year..
And to cap a great year for the development of snooker in Africa, the winner of the All African Snooker Championships has won a place in the World Open, when Egypt’s Mohammed Kayat will take his place alongside the world’s top professional snooker players this autumn.
Thanks to the ABSF, interest in snooker and pool has been increasing for the past decade and Kayat’s 6-1 victory over fellow Egyptian Wael Talaat in Cairo saw him triumph over competitors from eight countries.
British companies are highly regarded by the game’s regulators in Africa and billiard cloth manufacturer Milliken was in Egypt recently for talks with ABSF Federation president Mohammed Kammah.
16 national teams from all over Europe have engaged in battle in Kielce, Poland, for the 2010 Nations Cup tournament including top echelon EuroTour players like Marcus Chamat, Vincent Facquet and Serge Das, representing Sweden, France and Belgium respectively.
Several nations have fielded substantial teams, including the host nation of Poland who have two very formidable teams including the ever-present Radoslaw Babica, and must be strong contenders for the spoils, along with the small Ukrainian Team featuring Artem Koshevoy and Evgen Novosad.

Riley’s Darlington Tour Stop 2 - 5th-6th June 2010
This weekend the BWPPA tour arrived in Darlington for the first time since 2004, for tour stop #2 of the 2010 Dynamic Billiards season.
Despite the long trip north for a lot of the players the main event boasted a terrific 16 player field, that is testament to how far the tour has come in just over a year.
Roy Kimberley began his campaign with a 7-1 win over Shaun Madin, but Madin picked himself up in the one-loss bracket with a comfortable 7-3 win over Matt Lester. Madin was undoubtedly the surprise package of the weekend, as next he beat current English 8-ball World wheelchair Champion, and BWPPA #7 Gary Swift 7-6. Shaun wasn’t about to stop there, he was involved in another final rack shootout with BWPPA #2 Karl Read which he again came through as the victor 7-6. Into the semi then and BWPPA Chairman Matt Gleaves was next for Madin. Shaun came through 7-5 despite Gleaves playing at his home club, despite the semi-final defeat though Matt had done enough to move upto #2 in the main rankings.
Elsewhere in the tournament the BWPPA welcomed a new face Haider Sheikh who lost 7-2 to Nick Oliver, but then beat Frankie Gillen 7-3 in the one-loss bracket before losing 7-1 to Danny Luton in the quarter-finals, we hope Haider will become a regular contender in future BWPPA events, but that win for Danny Luton followed a 7-4 win over Glaswegian Matt Duffy and led to a semi-final against Roy Kimberley who has won the last 4 BWPPA events.
