Double delight for Teams England!

Quarter Final Matches

England A (1) 9-3 Romania
England B (15) 9-4 Finland (10)

THERE WAS double joy for English pool fans as both their sides won through to tomorrow’s semi-finals of the Dafabet World Cup of Pool with excellent wins in Bethnal Green. First the holders England A rolled over Romania who had done fantastically well to reach the last eight in their first World Cup. Then England B came from behind to put on a show as they took care of 2012 champions Finland.

England A can now look forward to facing Ko Pin Yi and Chang Yu Lung of Chinese Taipei while England B will face Naoyuki Oi and Toru Kuribayashi of Japan. Both matches take place on Sunday afternoon.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

England A enjoyed a comfortable 9-3 win over the surprise package Romanian side who had exceeded all expectations in reaching he quarter-finals with wins against two-time champions China as well as Indonesia.

There was an air of inevitability about the proceedings though as England ran away with it after Romania got off to a solid start. Babken, who looked nervy in their second round match against Indonesia, rolled home a pressure table length 6 ball to set up the first rack and that became 2-0 as Ladanyi laid a perfect snooker from which Appleton scratched.

Following a dry break, England won their first rack after both sides had chances and they took the next to level before an extraordinary incident occurred when Ladanyi inadvertently left his short cue extension under to top rail and the 2 ball hit it to give ball in hand to England and they cashed in for 3-2.

The English won the next for 4-2 for their fourth in a row before the Romanians steadied a shaky ship for 4-3. However, Ladanyi scratched on the 1 ball when there was no need and Appleton and Boyes ran out to go 5-3 in the lead.

The Romanians gained ball in hand in the ninth when Appleton jacked up with the cue ball very close to the 1 ball and the cue followed through to foul. Ladanyi though missed the 2 ball which proved very expensive as England cleared for 6-3.

Another miss on the 2 ball, this time by Melkonyan, was another gift for the English as they went to 7-3 and then 8-3 shortly after. The Romanians resistance was spent as England A took the final rack for an easy 9-3 victory.

Appleton analysed the win; “For 2-0 down we didn’t really do a lot wrong but they looked solid at the start but yesterday they couldn’t really make a ball. Today is a different day so we couldn’t take them lightly but from 2-0 we played solidly and they made a big mistake at 2-2 when he left his extension on the table.

Japan and Taiwan through!

Round 2 Scores

Chinese Taipei (4) 9-5 Austria
Japan (14) 9-4 Qatar

THERE WERE quarter-final wins for Chinese Taipei and Japan as the Dafabet World Cup of Pool continued in London on Saturday afternoon. The Taiwanese overcame a very unlucky Austrian side to book their fifth World Cup semi-final of which they’ve yet to win one. In the other match, Japan raced into a huge lead against Qatar before labouring to end it. They eventually fell over the line 9-4.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

In a high-quality match up, Chinese Taipei roared past the Austrian pair of Mario He and Albin Ouschan to become the first team to reach the semi-finals of the Dafabet World Cup of Pool. 9-5 was the score line as the Taiwanese started out strongly and maintained their dominance throughout.

The Austrians though enjoyed some atrocious luck as they scratched six times in total, with Mario He losing the white to the pocket three times from his break shot. However, the duo of Ko Pin Yi and Chang Yu Lung showed vision and creativity as they took on some amazing shots and were always on the offensive, looking for chances.

The Austrians had seven fouls, some of their own doing and some down to bad luck and that was a punishing statistic against the talented Taiwanese pair. One of the standouts of the match was a 2/9 combination by Ko to go 6-3 ahead as he kicked all the way up table to connect with the 2/9.

Qatar march on as Philippines exit early

Round 2 Scores

Qatar 7-3 Czech Republic
Finland (10) 7-4 Singapore
England B (15) 7-4 Philippines (2)

Friday evening was a tale of contrasting fortunes as Qatar put on a masterful performance to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history and the Philippines crashed out, failing to make the last eight for the first time in the tournament’s history. In the other match of the session, Finland once again won to look on track for their third semi-final in three years.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

England B – Daryl Peach and Mark Gray – started out as the big outsiders against Team Philippines but got off to a great start with some solid play and no mistakes as they took a 4-1 lead against the highly fancied Filipinos.

Warren Kiamco and Carlo Biado looked nervous and made some uncharacteristic errors to help the English on their way. However, a dry break from Peach gave the Philippines a chance and they ran the table out to get 1-4.

They took the next and when Gray scratched on the 2 ball following a push out, the Filipinos ran out to get within one of the English. A scratch from Peach left a tricky table but when Biado sunk the 9 ball to tie it up at 4-4, it began to look ominous.

That was as long as the comeback lasted. There was a safety battle on the 2 ball in the next but Biado left a look at it and Gray potted it down the side rail to set up the rack and restore the lead. In the next came an even bigger blow for the Filipinos. Placed in snooker by Biado, Peach outrageously fluked the 3 ball and obtained shape on the 4 and England B cleared for 6-4. They ran the next for an outstanding victory against the odds.

Gray said, “We had a great start with some good outs and we were playing well. But from 4-1 up Daryl got kicked in off on a break and we didn’t have much luck.; I played a good shot on the 2 to try and carom the 6 in and there was no gap but somehow the white scratched in off and the game turned to 4-4 and you are playing a best of five to get into the quarter-finals.

“We have a great chance of reaching the final. We haven’t had easy matches but we have beaten two good teams. We have played the Finnish lads many a time on the Euro Tour and we both have good head-to-head records against them so I am confident we can win that match.”

Peach added, “There were a few twists and turns but we were trying to win each mini interval 2-1 and we did win most of them 2-1. That gives you a short-term target. We played well and deserved the win.

“Finland is a tough match but so was that. It is a longer race so there is more time to settle down. They are a very good team as proven in the past when they have won it but my and Mark are a good team too and reached the final the only time we played the World Cup together, so we could be in for a good match.”

Taiwan looking the part as round two continues

Round 2 Scores

Austria (5) 7-2 France
Romania 7-5 Indonesia
Chinese Taipei (4) 7-3 Poland (13)

THERE WERE three more second round matches today at the Dafabet World Cup of Pool as minnows Romania continued their great run with a come-from-behind win over Indonesia. Austria and Chinese Taipei both had comfortable wins to set up a quarter-final clash on Saturday afternoon; Austria put paid to French hopes while Chinese Taipei scotched the chances of a decent-looking Polish side.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

In the opening game Austria reached the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year as they comfortably defeated France 7-2. Mario He and Albin Ouschan looked an improvement on their first round match and will be a force to be reckoned with at the weekend.

The French duo of Stephan Ouschan and Alex Montpellier were a little off the pace but got the score to 2-2 after losing the first two racks. The matched turned quite quickly as Montpellier swerved out of a snooker, caught the 1 ball but scratched to leave Ouschan a 1/9 combination. They followed that with a golden break to go to swiftly move to 4-2.

The burly He seemed to have worked out the break as he crunched the pack open with some old-school power and a miss from Montpellier allowed them to increase the lead.
When Ouschan tied the French up in an inescapable snooker the writing was on the wall and the Austrians ran out 7-2 winners.

Commented Ouschan, “It was a very good performance, they struggled early in the match and we took our chances to take the lead. We don’t care who we play next because they are both tough teams.”

England A through as Japan oust Holland

Round 1 Scores

England B (15) 7-4 Sweden

Round 2 Scores

Japan (14) 7-6 Holland (3)
England A (1) 7-0 Korea (16)

ENGLAND A AND JAPAN became the first two teams through to the quarter finals of the 2015 Dafabet World Cup of Pool as they enjoyed contrasting victories against Korea and Holland respectively. England A, closing the evening, trounced Korea in the only white-wash of the event so far while Japan won a fabulous hill-hill battle against the Dutch.

England can look forward to Romania or Indonesia in Saturday’s quarter finals while Japan face either Qatar or the Czech Republic. In the other match of the evening England B completed the first round of matches with a 7-4 win over Sweden.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

Holland won’t be repeating their recent runs to the semi-finals of the World Cup of Pool as they lost a thrilling round two match, 7-6 to Japan. The Japanese team consisting of the flamboyant joker Naoyuki Oi and the more restrained Toru Kurabayashi seemed to enjoy every minute of it as they held off the highly fancied Niels Feijen and Nick van den Berg to squeeze out the win.

Japan lead 3-1, 5-3 and then 6-4 before Holland squared it up with Feijen breaking for the match. A loose break though saw the cue ball squirt into the centre pocket to give ball in hand to the Japanese.

With a 7/9 combo set perfectly, they worked their way through the balls until Kurabayashi came to the game ball. ‘9 ball! Can’t miss!’ shouted Oi which heaped the pressure on his partner but he steadied himself to seal a superb win.

Oi was delighted to reach his country’s third quarter-final in the ten years of the World Cup; “We are thrilled to get through! Holland is one of the best teams here and they gave us a very tough game but we came through.

“We like to have fun and make the crowd have fun and it is great to play to this audience. We want to carry on playing in this way and we believe we can win this World Cup.

“When I set up the 7/9, I knew Toru would not miss it and he didn’t. There were some big moments in that match but we took our chance when it came at hill-hill,” he added.

More seeds bite the dust as round one draws to a close

Round 1 Scores

Czech Republic 7-3 Spain (11)
Finland (10) 7-4 Belgium
Singapore 7-5 Greece (7)

TWO MORE seeded teams crashed out of the 2015 Dafabet World Cup of Pool as the penultimate session of round one matches continued at the York Hall. The #11 seeds Spain were well beaten by unfancied Czech Republic while the seventh seeded Greece were overturned by Singapore. The other match saw former champions Finland enjoy a tidy win over Belgium.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

In a low quality match with plenty of errors, the Czech Republic had too much to the Spanish pair of the two Franciscos (Diaz-Pizarro & Sanchez Ruiz). In particular Sanchez Ruiz had a bit of a nightmare as he had a couple of glaring misses that helped the Czechs on their way.

Roman Hybler and Michal Gavenciak, who had reach the quarter-finals of the inaugural World Cup of Pool back in 2006, pulled away from 3-3 after being guilty of early errors themselves.

The turning point was the seventh rack as Gavenciak refused an open 6 ball in favour of laying a telling snooker. The Spanish failed to escape and with ball in hand the score became 4-3. From a powerful Gavenciak break in the eighth the Czechs ran out, and a 2/9 combo in the next made it 6-3. Spain could not recover as the Czechs booked a second round match against Qatar.

Commented Hybler, “We are really pleased to be into the second round. At the start of the match there was a lot of pressure for both teams and you could feel it. When we went 4-3 up I felt more confident and we made some good shots.

USA tumbles out as Holland and Philippines march on

Round 1 Scores

Qatar 7-5 USA (6)
Holland (3) 7-3 India
Philippines (2) 7-4 Russia

THERE was another big upset as day two of the Dafabet World Cup of Pool played out at the York Hall, London on Wednesday evening. This time it was the USA who crumbled, going down to Qatar who looked the part and definitely played it. In the other matches Holland had a comfortable win against India after getting off to a great start and the Philippines steamrollered Russia after losing the early exchanges.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

In the opening game Team USA (Mike Dechaine and Shane Van Boening) were left shell-shocked as they fell at the first hurdle to a lively Qatari team in front of a large noisy crowd. The score was 7-5 but there was no doubting the superior team on the day.

The Qatar team of Waleed Majid and Bashar Hussain played two superb racks to take the early lead at 2-0 and settle any nerves. The USA came back into it but trailing 2-3 Dechaine scratched while potting the 7 ball. That made it 4-2 to Qatar before the USA took the next to stay on their heels.

Qatar moved that to 5-3 with a 7/9 combo, before America won the 9th and then broke and ran to level it at 5-5. They couldn’t press home the advantage though and an outstanding 3/8/9 combo from Bashar Hussain put Qatar on the hill.

The axe fell in rack 12 when Van Boening caught an attempted safety on the 1 ball too thick and scratched. Qatar nearly made a mess of it with ball in hand but Waleed saved it with a nerveless bank on the 8 ball to set up the win.

Commented jubilant Waleed; “I am very excited to have beaten America. We didn’t just play for Qatar, we played for all Arab countries. Our federation has supported Qatari players well and we hope we can repeat this performance in the next match.

No upsets as WCoP action continues at the York Hall

Round 1 Scores

Poland (13) 7-3 New Zealand
Chinese Taipei (4) 7-5 Estonia
Japan (14) 7-3 Italy

THERE were comfortable wins for seeded teams Poland, Chinese Taipei and Japan as action continued in East London in the first round of the Dafabet World Cup of Pool. The opening day had seen a host of upsets with Germany, China and Canada departing but everyone stuck to the script and survived to reach round 2.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

Chinese Taipei, one of the highly fancied teams here in London this week, overcame an Estonian team of Dennis Grabe and Erki Erm, winning by a 7-5 scoreline. Estonia took the opening rack before Erm missed an easy 9 ball to go 2-0 and allowed Ko Pin Yi and Chang Yu Lung to take four consecutive legs for a 4-1 lead.

The Estonian pair battled and enjoyed some fortune but in the end it was the Taiwanese who took the match 7-5. Ko and Chang certainly have the pedigree to become the first team from their nation to lift the World Cup and they should only improve from this performance as they look ahead to their second round match against Poland.
