England A 9-7 USA

England and Holland complete semis line up

THERE IS certain to be a European winner of the ninth annual Betway World Cup of Pool as England A – Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes – put paid to Team USA in a tense quarter-final encounter at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

The momentum ebbed and flowed as the English duo coasted into a 7-2 lead as the American pairing of Earl Strickland and Shane Van Boening looked patchy as they struggled to find a rhythm. That soon changed as the English grip on the match slipped away and at 7-7 the match was anyone’s.

A dry break from Shane Van Boening though halted the USA’s ascendancy and the English ran out to get to the hill and then broke and ran the last for a great win and a semi-final berth against Finland.

Appleton: “We made a dream start to get to 7-2 and the game was a bit too easy for us; we were controlling the cue ball really well, we kept them off the table really, we didn’t have anything difficult to do, and at 7-2 I was thinking we were winning easily without having to do much.

“At 7-2 Karl missed a tough bank on the 2 ball and it is 7-3, then they get lucky in the next rack where they missed a ball but got safe. It happened again the next rack and I am starting to think it is a twist and something was going to happen."

Finland 9-7 Philippines

Europe 2, Asia 0 as Finns and Austrians make semis

2012 champions Finland fought back from 4-2 and 7-5 down to knock defending champions Philippines out of the Betway World Cup of Pool at the quarter-final stage with a 9-7 victory at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

The match was a story of supreme shot making from both sides but it was Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen who made it to Sunday’s semi-finals, where they join an Austrian side who shocked China in a 9-3 victory.

At 7-7 Dennis Orcollo tried a tough jump to pocket the one but cannoned the cue ball into the seven and gave Finland ball in hand. From there Finland reached the hill and didn’t allow Philippines back to the table as they booked a semi-final against either England A or USA, who face off tonight.

“It was a nail-biter and we were hanging in there by the skin of our teeth,” admitted Immonen. “We somehow got ourselves over the finish line in the end.

“We played perfect position in the final rack. Makkonen is breaking the best of anybody in the tournament. I have figured the break out and we are both breaking well now, which is a good sign for tomorrow.

Makkonen added: “It is easy to play when you have a good partner, good atmosphere and a good table. If we play our own game it doesn’t matter who we play, so I don’t mind if it is England A or USA.”

Masters heads to Nottingham

THE PARTYPOKER WORLD POOL MASTERS will be staged in Nottingham for the first time in its 22-year history when the event takes place at the Portland Centre this November 14-16, with tickets on sale Monday, September 29.

The Masters returned to England last year and after a successful staging in Barnsley remains in the UK for 2014, with an exciting field of the world’s best players to be announced soon.

Tickets will be available via SeeTickets.com priced just £5 for Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday afternoon, and £10 for the Saturday and Sunday evening sessions. Fans who don’t want to miss any of the action can take advantage of a £25 season ticket for access to all five sessions.

In its 21 year history, the Masters spent the first ten years in Britain before moving to Holland for a four year spell, interrupted by a return to the UK in 2005 when Raj Hundal lifted the title in Doncaster, a few miles up the road from Barnsley.

The previous six years have seen three Masters in Las Vegas, one in Manila and then Kielce, Poland before last year’s return to England.

Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn: “We are delighted to be bringing the Masters to Nottingham for the first time.

England A 7-1 Greece

Germany by a whisker as China and England A coast

England A set up a quarter-final clash with old rivals USA by dispatching Greece 7-1 on an evening which also saw China give England B no chances in a 7-0 win. Earlier Canada had gifted Germany victory as the final round two fixtures played out at the Betway World Cup of Pool at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

Before the tournament Karl Boyes said he would love the chance to ‘shut Earl Strickland up’, after the pair had a fiery Mosconi Cup singles match in Las Vegas last year. Boyes and his team-mate Darren Appleton booked their match against USA with a confident 7-1 victory over Greece.

Nikos Ekonomopoulos and Alexander Kazakis were sloppy early on but as England A gained momentum the only further chance Greece were allowed came in the sixth rack when Appleton scratched. They took the chance to make the score 5-1 but Kazakis’ subsequent illegal break handed control back to England A, who pounced to reach the hill and then take the match in the following rack.

“We are looking forward to the match with USA now,” said Appleton. “It was in the back of our minds but we weren’t going to look past Greece because they are a great team.

“They didn’t play at their best tonight and we were solid. We broke better tonight and just need to get a better feel of the table now.

“We are here to try and win the tournament and we knew if we beat Greece we would play America. The Ryder Cup is on right now and we really wanted that match. We look forward to beating them tomorrow.”

Boyes added: “They had a couple of chances at the start of the match but the table caught them out. Darren has adapted brilliantly and played two good matches, he was flawless tonight.

“We didn’t break too well in the first match but we have put a lot of hours in since then and figured something out.”

Soaraway Finns send Poles packing

FINLAND registered a second 7-0 victory to set up a titanic quarter-final tussle with Philippines as Austria and 2013 finalists Holland also progressed to the last eight of the Betway World Cup of Pool at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Friday afternoon.

Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen won the 2012 World Cup for Finland and haven’t dropped a rack yet this year. They will now meet defending champions Philippines on Saturday afternoon having barely given Poland (Karol Skowerski and Mateusz Sniegock) an opportunity to visit the table in what was expected to be a closely-fought round two battle.

Earlier in the week they had seen off Korea by the same scoreline and have become the only nation to seal consecutive 7-0 wins in Betway World Cup of Pool history.

Finland’s break and run in the first rack set the tone, although Immonen’s illegal break in rack two handed control to Poland. Had Skowerski not slipped up on the six, perhaps the story could have been different. As it was Finland were flawless and relentless and proceeded with ease to Saturday’s quarter-finals.

“It is pretty freaky not to drop a rack, we have never seen this in the history of the event,” said Immonen. “Our breaks are working well and we are solving the problem situations well. We are both coming with some class shots and as they say, when it rains it pours.

“We haven’t been tested yet but if we keep this consistent demeanour, run the racks and do the work then it is going to pay dividends.

“Philippines are capable of switching gears at any time and we will expect them to play well tomorrow. We will have to match that level but if we keep playing like this I don’t like anybody’s chances against us.”

Makkonen added: “Our chemistry clicks together so in doubles we play well. We would like to break a little better but we are happy.”

England B through as US and Philippines make quarters

ENGLAND B completed the list of round one victors at the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool as they squeezed past India at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Thursday evening. There were also second round wins for the Philippines and USA who both take their place in Saturday’s quarter-final draw.

In probably the most entertaining match of the tournament so far, the England B side of Chris Melling and Daryl Peach put paid to Indian hopes by the odd rack in 13 to give themselves a second round match-up against China.

The Indian duo of Raj Hundal and Amar Kang were making their fourth appearance in the event as a pair and both sides looked in good shape. It was England B though, who shot into a 2-0 lead as Kang missed on the 6 ball. The well-supported Indians calmed their nerves and got on level terms as a jump shot from Hundal on the 2 ball set up the third rack, and then a break and run made it 2-2.

The Indians broke and ran the next three racks to take them into a 5-2 lead as Hundal and Kang really found the hang of the table. An illegal break got the England team back to the table in the next and they made no mistakes to stop the rot.

They also took the next as Hundal had to force position on the 6 ball, and Kang’s missed jump shot left the table open for the English. They made it 4-5 and then levelled in what was a thrilling encounter.

Peach and Melling took the next two though to need just one final rack for the win but a superb clearance in the next from the India made it anyone’s with one rack to play. Hundal made a ball on the break but the requisite two balls failed to cross the headstring making it illegal and England returned to an inviting table. The last two balls were tricky as the cue ball ran out of position but they made no mistakes to take their place in the second round.

Commented a relieved Melling, “It was a little awkward at the end of the match as I wanted to make sure we had a chance to pot the 9 ball and Daryl made a great shot on the 9 to win it.

“Raj and Amar were unbelievable to be fair and there really didn’t deserve to be a loser in the match. You have to hope you get one chance and if you do get the chance take it, and we managed to do that and come out on the right side of things.”

Peach added, “I kept my head still, feet down and shoved the cue in a straight line. If I missed we would have lost so I focused on my technique and made sure it went in.”

Easy afternoon for Germany, Canada and the Swiss

THERE were comfortable wins for Germany, Canada and Switzerland at the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool as the opening session of day three unwound at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. There is just one more round one game remaining as India and England B slug it out in the opening game of Thursday evening.

In the opening game, 2011 champions Germany – Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet – had too much for Malaysia, represented by Alan Tan and Ibrahim Amir, as they coasted to a 7-1 victory.

“We’re obviously very happy with the result and the performance,” said a delighted Hohmann.

“I missed a bank shot in the first rack but after that we didn’t make too many mistakes. We got a little fortunate getting balls after the break, that is very important and we were able to string a few racks together so that helped our confidence.

“We are still trying to figure out the speed of the table but I think this match will set us up positively for the rest of the tournament,” he added.

His partner Souquet said, “The break is huge. We were a little fortunate after the breaks to get a shot on the lowest ball, and twice it was tight but we were able to get out and string three or four racks together and that was key.”

Dutch, US & England A go through

THREE of the big guns of the sport enjoyed victories at the Betway World Cup of Pool as the first round continued at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. Holland, USA and England A all had wins and will take their place in the second round.

Home team England A – Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes – had a huge scare as they nearly succumbed to Spain, scraping through in the deciding rack of the match. Spain had taken a 5-3 lead in front of a lively crowd but the English levelled it at 5-5.

Francisco Diaz for Spain, though, played a daring 4/9 combination which put the Spaniards on the hill. His partner David Alcaide just couldn’t get the requisite number of balls over the head string and control of the table passed back to the English. It was a lifeline that they gratefully accepted to level the match at 6-6.

An inconclusive break from Appleton saw Spain back to the table for a push out. Both teams had visits before Boyes missed a bank on the 2 ball to give Spain a great chance. Alcaide though, failed to pot the 4 ball and with the balls lying invitingly on the table, the English pair cleared to take a nervy win.

Super Qatar topple Taiwan!

QATAR upset the applecart at the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool as they turned over the highly fancied Chinese Taipei pairing of Chang Yu-lung & Hsu Kai-lun to take their nation through to the second round for the first time in the event’s nine year history.

Taking place at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth, the Betway World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the world vying for a $250,000 prize fund, and it was Qatar who still has their eyes on the prize following an exciting 7-5 win.

The Middle Eastern country had played in the event from its inception in 2006 until 2010, having failed to win a game but pool in Qatar has made significant progress in recent years. The pairing of newcomer Waleed Majid and veteran Bashar Hussain shed any nerves as they moved into a 2-0 lead.

That lead became 5-2 before the Chinese Taipei pair steadied the ship as they won two racks to reduce the deficit to 5-4. Waleed bagged the 9 ball to put his side on the hill, and although Chinese Taipei grabbed one back, some superior shot-making in the 12th rack sealed a historic win for Qatar.

Commented Waleed, “We are so happy to win; we were delighted just to be at the Betway World Cup of Pool. Today we played against a strong team, one of the top five in the world. We’re hoping to make a name for Qatar in world pool.

“If you break and you get a good spread you can win the racks and in the short format you can win any match. It was great to play with Bashar - he is a very, very good player with lots of experience and we make a good partnership. We enjoy playing together and as the tournament goes on hopefully as a pairing we can get better.”

Philippines hold off battling Chile

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS the Philippines got their 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool campaign underway successfully as they edged past a gutsy Chile side that had started out as huge underdogs but almost managed to silence a big Filipino contingent at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

7-5 was the final score but there was plenty of heart shown by the South American side consisting of Alejandro Carvajal and Enrique Rojas. The pair had endured a tortuous journey that had taken them from Santiago to Sao Paolo, across to Paris and then onto London and then Portsmouth. It didn’t help that there was a lengthy delay in Brazil factored into the itinerary and at the end of that trek were reigning champs Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza

They stayed with their more illustrious opponents in the early stages and the Chilean pair took the fifth rack and they completed it with a fluked 9 ball. Carvajal though, immediately lost momentum as he followed the 1 ball into the side pocket with the white to give ball in hand to the Philippines. That took the score to 4-2 and the Filipinos took the next to give themselves some breathing space.

However, the game South Americans were not finished as they recovered to take the next and then a break and run took the score to 4-5 to the Asian pair.

They both had visits in the tenth game and it was the Philippines who took it, but they lost the table in the next as Chile completed a nervy run out to stay in the match. However, a cruel kick on the cue ball from the blue 2 on Rojas’ break shot ended South American hopes as Orcollo and Corteza ran out to take the match.

“Race to seven is very short and we struggled in the beginning. We didn’t get nice breaks and had two scratches and a dry break,” said Orcollo.

“It feels like playing at home because of the support from the Filipino community here in England. This event is very special for us and we really wanted to come through the first round,” he added.
