GERMANY’S THORSTEN HOHMANN WINS HIS SECOND WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A SEARING 13-7 VICTORY OVER THE PHILIPPINES ANTONIO GABICA

Playing with a laser-like focus and an intensity that spoke of a clear desire for pool immortality, Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann capped an incredible week with yet another a searing performance, and won the 2013 World 9-ball Championship, beating the Philippines Antonio Gabica, 13-7, in front of nearly 1000 highly partisan Filipino fans at Doha’s Al Arabi Sports Club.

With the victory Hohmann now becomes only the second man to win the WPA World 9-ball Championship two times, matching American Earl Strickland, who won pool’s most prestigious crown in 1991 and 2002. Hohmann will now also take over as the World Number 1 ranked player.

Hohmann’s second World 9-ball Championship comes exactly ten years after he burst on to the international scene with a powerful run through a stacked field in Cardiff, Wales in 2003. In the intervening years Hohmann has firmly established himself as one of the greats of this era, consistently winning events big and small all over the globe. He excels at various other pool disciplines as well, especially straight pool, for which he is arguably the best in the world.

But while the last ten years have placed the 34 year old Hohmann in pool’s elite, his performance this week in Doha has surely brought his stature into rarefied air. Along the way to the title he defeated a who’s who of pool strong men, among them the defending world champion Darren Appleton, and five, yes five, top Filipino players, including four in a row down the homestretch. And don’t forget to throw in the fact that Hohmann did all this in front of what was essentially a highly partisan home crowd of mostly Filipinos who cheered wildly for their boys. Looked at in total, that’s a masterpiece by anyone’s standards.

Dyno Darren joins Euro Squad for Vegas

‘DYNAMITE’ DARREN APPLETON becomes the second member of the 2013 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup European team as he crowns another successful 12 months with a place among the games’ elite at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 2nd to 5th December.

Appleton, 35, will join Ralf Souquet in the line-up for what will be his fifth Mosconi Cup appearance in a row following his debut in 2009.

“I expected it this year to be honest as I’d done well in the Mosconi in the last two years but I wasn’t expecting to get picked so early so I’m very excited about it,” said Appleton.

“I don’t take anything for granted but knew I had a great chance of making the team and joining Ralf.

QATAR BASED FILIPINO ANTONIO GABICA STORMS INTO THE SEMI-FINALS, JOINS BIADO, HOHMANN AND BOYES IN THE FINAL FOUR OF THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Over a 15-plus year professional career, Antonio Gabica has often been viewed by Filipino pool fans as an extremely talented player who has a tendency to wither when faced with big time pressure situations. But for the man affectionately known as “Gaga” to his fellow Filipinos, that once signature trait now sits forever buried deep in the Qatari desert.

Displaying masterful, career-defining cueing prowess, and the heart of a proud lion, Gabica notched three straight pressure cooker victories today, and barged into the semi-finals of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship. There he joins three other red hot players in the race to pool’s pantheon, among them fellow Filipino Carlo Biado, Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann, and Great Britain’s Karl Boyes.

Each race to 11, alternate break semi-final will feature the Philippines versus Europe. In one semi-final, Gabica will face off against Boyes. In the other semi-final, Biado will do battle with Hohmann. Both semi-final matches will be played simultaneously at the Al Arabi Sports Indoor Stadium beginning at 1:30pm Doha time(GMT +3.) The race to 13, alternate break final will begin at 5pm.

If today’s incredible action is any indication, the Al Arabi will be positively rocking on Friday. Having two Filipinos in the semi-finals ensures that a huge crowd of overseas Filipinos, whose population numbers close to 200,000 in Qatar, will surely pack the 1000 seat arena. On top of this, Filipino pool fans are notoriously boisterous when it comes to rooting for their man. Both Hohmann and Boyes will no doubt be up against a wave of fan emotion, and will have to bear down extra hard to stay composed.

For the 41 year old Gabica, there’s an added home-court advantage in that he has lived and worked in Qatar for the last four years, working as an assistant coach for the Qatari national pool team. Gabica, although playing under the Philippine flag, wears the colors of Qatar and is beloved by the Qataris involved in the local pool scene, and treated as one of their own. Both Filipinos and Qataris in the crowd today were cheering wildly for Gabica and at one point were even chanting his nickname, “Gaga! Gaga!”

Rocket is back: ‘losing is not an option’

‘ROCKET’ RODNEY MORRIS, a winner of the recent US Open 10 Ball Championship, becomes the third member of the 2013 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup American team as he takes his place alongside Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 2nd to 5th December.

Morris, 42, will be making his ninth appearance for his country which puts him at No.3 on the all-time list. Making his debut in Las Vegas in 2003, he got off to a tremendous start in the annual Europe v America 9 ball battle, winning on his first three outings including MVP honours in 2004.

However, the likeable Hawaiian has not been on a winning side since 2005, something he will be looking to make amends for when battle commences in December.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic about being on this year's Mosconi Cup team and representing USA in what I believe is the most exciting pool event in the world,” he said.

“I can't wait to get in there and mix it up with Europe's best and win some huge matches for my teammates.

“I've had some really great moments in this event. I won a massive match against Thorsten Hohmann my first year I played, and I won another great match against Mika Immonen in Holland when I went on to win MVP that time, so I'm pumped for this year.”

THE POOL GODS MAKE THEIR DRAMATIC PRESENCE FELT IN DOHA AS ONLY 32 REMAIN FOR THE SPORT'S BIGGEST PRIZE

When players and fans talk about the “pool gods,” they’re referring to that mysterious force that seems to regularly take over important matches, sometimes for no apparent reason. Often times, though, in hindsight, there are clear reasons for the gods’ actions; to stamp down over confidence, reward risk, or penalize players for missing shots that were meant as gifts. Anyone who’s watched or played enough pool swears the pool gods are real. These other worldly forces provide the ingredients for championship pool’s incredible nerve racking drama.

The pool gods certainly appeared to be hovering over the proceedings Wednesday inside the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, as the final 64 players did battle in a rollicking day long pool-fest in the first single elimination round of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship.

After the 11 hours of play, 32 players headed for the exits, while 32 stayed alive and will come back Thursday for a veritable sprint to the finish line that promises some incredibly exciting pool. By the end of play Thursday, the run for pool’s biggest prize will be down to just four players.

There was nothing anyone could call a major upset today, but the twists and turns provided a full day’s entertainment for the several hundred fans on hand. For many of the players, they looked like they had just emerged from full scale battle.

Taiwan’s Chang Jung Lin must surely being looking upstairs and asking lots of questions today. The world ranked number 8 came to Doha with heavy expectations and deservedly so as he is Taiwan’s number 1 player and is a proven winner of big events.

Down 4-2 in a race to 11 match against German veteran Oliver Ortmann in the day’s first of four sessions, Chang stormed in front 6-4 and looked to be marching towards victory. But suddenly, the towering Chang’s break shot completely abandoned him. Unable to find an opening after the break, or even pot a ball, Chang lost his confidence, while Ortmann, seizing on the moment, found his. The German won seven straight racks to send Chang packing.

“It all depends on the break shot,” Ortmann said. “You have to hope your opponent breaks bad. That’s the only chance you have against a guy like him. I know how good he is. He’s one of the best in the world so to beat him gives me a lot of confidence.”

THREE POOL POWERHOUSES MAKE UP NEARLY HALF THE FIELD AS THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP MOVES INTO THE FINAL 64

There’s something about Judgement Day in the World 9-ball Championship that brings out the wild drama, and the crazy pressure that is unique to professional pool at the highest levels.

It makes a high stakes money game seem like child’s play. This is, after all, the world championship. And this is the moment where, with the field about to be cut in half, with all matches do or die, a player gets his chance to reach the final 64 single elimination stage. From there, in just three days with six more wins, he might just make history and win a world title.

Sure, for most players this incredible dream will remain just that. But pool is a sport where the slimmest roll of the ball, even just a millimeter, can mean the difference between staying a nobody or being crowned king. As long as you’re still standing, there’s always that chance at history, and with that carrot dangling out there, that means nerves rattling, arms and wills weakening, and unbearable pressure taking its toll.

As the Philippines Marlon Manalo said today after winning his match and advancing to the final 64; “Was I nervous? Sure I was nervous. You could win a world championship, right?”

Indeed with careers on the line, Day 4 of the 2013 World Pool Championship proved to be a Judgement Day in all its glory. 32 players made it through to join 32 others from Monday to make up the big dance, where it now becomes a single elimination knockout, race to 11, all the way to Friday’s race to 13 Final. For the 32 players who didn’t make it, the walk to the exits and into the all-encompassing heat of Doha was surely long and lonely.

PoolActionTV - Fight Night 003: Larry Nevel vs. Chip Compton

These 2 have been trying to make a game since Vegas. Larry proposed rotation and Chip wanted nothing to do with that. Chip proposed that they play some One Pocket but only if there was a flock of geese on the line. The game didn't happen.

When Larry returned home from the Bonus Ball effort he had some success playing one pocket against one of the top regional player and a backer emerged for the Chip Compton match.

It's ON!

ENRIQUE ROJAS - FIRST EVER CHILEAN IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP KNOCKOUT STAGE

Relief and pure joy were two emotions on wide display on Day 3 of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship, as 32 players booked their spots into Wednesday’s Final 64, the single elimination knockout phase that signals the real start of pool’s most prestigious event.

Relief came from those top players who just wanted to notch their second win and put the madness that can be the group stages behind them. Pure joy came from the other players, those that know that winning this tournament is a massive long shot, and just getting through to the big dance is a career defining moment in itself.

The 128 player field that began here on Saturday was already considered by many to be the strongest ever gathered for this event. As the wannabes wither and the main stage starts to take shape, the remaining field promises to offer a brilliant collection of cue artists from all corners of the globe. It’s the kind of shot in the arm the sport of pool needs.

Today’s play inside the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha was given over to only winners’ side matches. Winners advanced to the Final 64, while losers were sent over to the losers side of their group brackets, where they will play for one more chance tomorrow on Judgement Day.

POOL'S BEST ARE HEADED ON A COLLISION COURSE

As the long, slow grind of this week-long World 9-ball championship wound its way through Day 2, perhaps the best way to try and understand where it’s all headed at this point is to listen to the words of defending champion Darren Appleton, after he won his opening match on Day 1.

Said the Brit: “There are probably only 20 players who you can actually say are favorites to win this tournament, 10 more who are knocking on the door of perhaps winning it, and 20 more who can, on any given night, beat any of those top 30 players.”

Add that simple equation together and you’ve got 50 top pros who can wreak massive havoc out on the blue pitch, with 30 who can realistically even consider entering the winner’s circle come September 13th. I don’t know about you. But those look like some extremely impressive numbers that, when added together, can only mean this event is primed for some big time fireworks in the coming days. That’s a guarantee.

This tantalizing fact has become even more evident after four sessions over nine hours today inside the frigid Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, as Day 2’s storyline followed Day 1 with those massive upsets we all love again non-existent, and all of pool’s top guns notching impressive wins to position themselves for slots in the Final 64. You need two wins to advance out of the group stage into the single elimination knockout round of 64, and it’s looking like most of the 50 players that Appleton referred to will be there when the real action begins.

PRO9 has established an outstanding reputation as Europes No.1 source for information on American Pool in the UK and Europe. Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
