Ouschan snatches another title - Larsson takes title in wheelchair division

Jasmin Ouschan is the 2011 EPBF European Champion in the Women�s 9-Ball division.

Jasmin took a quick 3:1 lead over Gerda. She opened the next rack with a powerful break. She had no position on the 2-ball so she decided to simply banked it in. �We have seen everything already so far � bank shots, combinations, kick shots� she just seems to never miss� comments the official commentator of the LiveStream matches Marco Takis. Jasmin ran the rack and took a 4:1 lead, making the game look so easy. Then Gerda played a good break shot and ran the balls until she got no position on the 6-ball. She left a safety for Jasmin who tried to play a jump shot but she scratched. Gerda ran the remaining balls and got closer, making the score 2:4. Another break and run followed from Jasmin to go to 5:2. Then it was Gerda�s break shot. Two balls went down but there was no shot on the 1-ball. Gerda played a push out, leaving a combination shot for Jasmin. Jasmin pocketed the combination shot dead centre and ran the whole rack, making the score 6:2. That put her on the hill with her own break shot to come up. She pocketed the 1-ball in the side pocket but got no position on the 2-ball. She let Gerda get to the table again because she missed the 2-ball.

Gerda had a long shot and she missed, leaving a shot in turn for Jasmin. Jasmin pocketed the 2-ball but then scratched on the 3-ball. Gerda got to the table with ball in hand. She ran some balls and fell straight on the 7-ball. By trying to play position for the 8-ball, Gerda tried to cheat the pocket and missed. The tables have very tight pockets. Jasmin got to the table and played another combination shot, sinking the 9-ball. She defended her title from last year in the 9-ball division as well as in straight pool.

In the final match of the wheelchair division 9-ball, Henrik Larsson (SWE) is the 2011 European 9-ball champion. He defeated Jouni Tahti (FIN) with 7:6. Before the match, Tahti seemed to be the favoured player. But Larsson has also won 20 titles at European Championships, including 6 Gold and 11 Silver medals. He took a 3:1 and 5:3 lead in the match. Then Tahti got back and tied the score at 5:5. He also managed to win the next rack and was the first player on the hill, leading 6:5 with Larsson to break. Henrik took his chance and did not show any nervousness, running out the rack to tie the score again, this time 6:6 with Tahti to break. After a lot of safety shots it was Henrik Larsson to get the shot at the 9-ball and win the match with 7:6.

More action at the Dynamic European Championships in Germany

After the LIVE TV production for Eurosport yesterday with all its preparations and requirements, the tournament has switched back to �normal� mode. Play continued today in the 10-ball competition of all three divisions: Men, Women and Wheelchair.

Notable results contained the 8:7 victory of Daniele Corrieri (ITA) over new 8-ball champion Dominic Jentsch (GER). Corrieri won the first three racks but Jentsch equalized that in the following three racks, tying the score at 3:3. Then it was actually Jentsch to win the next racks also gaining a 7:4 lead over Corrieri. Being on the hill, Jentsch was not able to cross the finish line. Corrieri put rack after rack in his account, snatching the match 8:7 from Jentsch. Since Jentsch had already lost 7:8 against Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) in the winner�s round, he is now eliminated from the 10-ball competition.

In the winner�s qualification round, Oliver Ortmann (GER) lost his match for a seat in the round of the last 32 players against youngster Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (ESP) clearly with 8:1.

In the women�s division, all favoured players won their matches and got their spot in the single elimination. Defending Champion Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) defeated Simone Kuenzl (GER) with 6:2. Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) beat Melissa Rademakers (NED) 6:3. European 8-Ball Champion Kynthia Orfanidis (NED) was already on her way to the loser�s side, trailing 5:3 against Katrine Jensen (DEN). But then Jensen simply could not close the file in her favour. She missed some important shots including the 10-ball. No need to ask Kynthia twice if she wanted to accept the gifts: of course! She pocketed some difficult long shots and overcame Jensen with a 6:5 victory in the end. Gerda Hofstaetter (AUT) will be joining Ouschan, Poikkijoki and Orfanidis in the single elimination, winning 6:5 over Russian newcomer Anastasia Nechaeva.

In the wheelchair division, 8-ball champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) succeeded over Kurt Deklerck (BEL) with 5:2. That makes him the first semi-finalist in that division. He is joined by Aslum Abookabar (GBR) who won over Fred Dinsmore with 6:5.

Nick van den Berg - Netherlands
Dutch player takes the Gold Medal

In a relatively one sided final match, Nick van den Berg from the Netherlands defeated Mario He (AUT) with 11:3.

�I really wanted the title, I was very focussed.� �Mario is a very good shooter and I never underestimated him�, says the newly crowned Champion. �He played risky shots that I would not have taken, not even in a house tournament� says van den Berg. �You are playing the best players in the World here and you cannot go for any more risk than necessary.� �When I was younger, I played those shots myself and I had to learn that these risks are not good to take, especially not in a final�. He does have a lot of respect for his opponent though. �He will be in the top group of European pool players. Maybe he is already there. He is a great shot maker�. Nick van den Berg is the current #1 player on the Euro-Tour rankings and now also the 9-ball European Champion. When asked about his next goal, he says with a smile: �I want to snatch a World Champion title now.�

Mario He said after the final: �I feel great though I lost. I have achieved the silver medal and that makes me very happy.� �I am satisfied with my performance in the event.� �I was a bit tired in the final and I tried to just go in there and play Nick and see what I can do. It didn�t work out in the fiinal but it did in the earlier matches.� Nick van den Berg is a well-earned 2011 9-ball Champion.

On Friday 10-ball matches of the preliminary rounds will continue. The women�s and wheelchair final will be played Friday evening at 19:00 local time.

Mario He - Austria
Young Austrian hope defeats World Junior Champion from Spain

In the second Men�s semi-final, Mario He (AUT) defeated Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (ESP) with 9:7.

Like the other semi-final before, also this second semi-final was aired LIVE on Eurosport. And like in the earlier encounter the audience was presented a very tight match between the two players. Mario He seemed to be a bit more comfortable with the setup and adjusted to the TV table better than Francisco. The Spaniard missed some easy shots and played some ineffective safeties. Mario was very concentrated and at the score of 8:7 in his favour, he broke the balls and pocketed them one after the other, running out the rack. He won 9:7 over Sanchez Ruiz and will now face Nick van den Berg (NED) in the final which will be aired LIVE at 20:00 tonight on Eurosport.

Nick van den Berg - Netherlands
All Dutch clash went in favour of �El Nino�

Nick van den Berg won the first semi-final in the Men�s 9-ball division with 9:7.

The match contained many unforced errors by both players which could be due to the LIVE TV coverage. The match was under the shot clock from the beginning, meaning the players had a time frame of 35 seconds per shot with one extension to one minute per rack. In the beginning, Nick took a 3:0 lead over Huidji who seemed to be very nervous. Then also Nick started making some unnecessary mistakes. He missed shots which he would never ever miss under �normal� conditions. So Huidji was able to come back and close the gap between them a bit. However, Nick van den Berg managed to keep the lead throughout the match. In the final stage of the match, Nick�s break came better and he had some run-outs since the balls where spread well open on the table with the cue ball in a good position. When the score was 7:5 in favour of Nick, he missed an easy 3-ball because it slightly touched the 5-ball on its way into the pocket and therefore stayed on the table. Huidji won that rack but Nick played more solid than Huidji.

In the end, both players who belong to Europe�s pool elite, made more mistakes than expected. They still demonstrated high class pool billiard and Nick van den Berg is a deserved winner of the match with 9:7. His opponent will be determined from the match between Mario He (AUT) and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (ESP).

Gerda Hofstaetter - Austria
Hofstaetter and defending Champion Ouschan meet in the 9-ball final

Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) won her semi-final over Line Kjoersvik (NOR) with a whitewash 7:0. Even with the alternate break format, the Norwegian never had a chance at the table and Ouschan showed no mercy, not even giving one single rack to Kjoersvik.

The other women�s semi-final was a bit closer. Gerda Hofstaetter (AUT) played against Anastasia Nechaeva (RUS). The Russian took a lead in the early stage of the match.

Hofstaetter, who obviously was much more experienced than her young opponent, was able to reverse the score by taking a 3:2 lead herself. From then on, the match was characterized by tactical play. When Hofstaetter was on the hill leading 6:4, Nechaeva played some great shots and positioned the cue ball a bit too far away from the 9-ball. She missed the 9-ball and left it hanging over the pocket for Hofstaetter who took that present and won the match 7:4. She will now face her fellow countrywoman Jasmin Ouschan in the 9-ball final of the Dynamic European Championships 2011 which will be played on Friday afternoon at 19:00 local time.

In the wheelchair division, two well-known faces will have the honour to battle for the title. Henrik Larsson (SWE) won his semi-final against Roy Kimberley with 7:4. His opponent in the final match will be Finish player Jouni Tahti who beat Tony Southern (GBR) in the semi-final with 7:4.

Countdown to live TV-production today

Thursday starts with the 9-ball quarter-finals in all divisions. The organizer has ordered four doping tests for randomly drawn players. This is done in most sports today in order to satisfy the requests from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). These tests are never announced and maybe more tests will follow�
The most surprising result in the men�s quarter-final matches is the victory of World Junior Champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (SPA) over �Terminator� Niels Feijen (NED) with 9:4. Sanchez took a quick 4:0 lead. Feijen stroke back and tied the match at 4:4. Things were looking better for the Dutch player. But then the unexpected happened. Sanchez pulled out his best game and put rack after rack in his account. When he was on the hill, Niels tried to play a tough shot and scratched. Sanchez came to the table being on the hill, having 5 balls on the table and ball in hand. He pocketed them, defeating Niels Feijen with 9:4.

The feature match on table 24 in that round was the match between Mariusz Skoneczny (POL) and Nick van den Berg (NED). Van den Berg won the encounter with 9:5 but the result could have been the other way around as well. That does not mean that Nick played bad � he was just unlucky with his break shots.

Skoneczny played steady until the score was 5:5. Then he made the unnecessary mistakes and made it possible for Nick to seize the match off him. The Polish player had so many chances that he did not make use of. He either overpaced the position for the next shot and then missed the next ball or he pulled the cue ball in the pocket. It seems he was pretty nervous playing in front of all the TV cameras.

In the women�s division, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) succeeded in taking revenge from Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) by winning 7:5. �This time I picked the wrong tactics too many times�, says the likeable Finnish player after the match, �I went for the shot when I should have played safe.� �I think my nerves did not work as well as they did in 8-ball. I was too nervous and that is probably the reason why I made the mistakes. Jasmin deserved the win�.

What also makes today a special day is the fact that the semi-finals and the final in the men�s division will be aired LIVE on Eurosport 2. Many people work behind the curtains in order to prepare everything for the production.

Scott Higgins - Great Britain
Chamat beats Babica - �Napoleon� through to winner�s qualification round

Today at 13:45 local time, Marcus Chamat (SWE) and Radoslaw Babica (POL) had an appointment. They faced each other in the first winner�s round of the 10-ball competition. Both players have been in the circuit for a long time now and they know each other very well. When asked before the match about Chamat�s opponent, Tom Eksell, the Swedish team leader said: �Actually, Marcus did not show his best game yet during the EC. I think that a matchup with a strong player like Radoslaw is good for him. He needs a strong player to get going�. The match started out evenly and the tactical side of the game was emphasized by both players. Chamat was always one or two racks in front of Babica and he also played better. �Marcus made one mistake, Babica made two or three�, Eksell stated. �Therefore, the victory for Marcus is in order�. Chamat won the match with 8:5 over Babica.

In another top player�s clash, Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) managed to sneak into the next round on the winner�s side by barely defeating the new European 8-Ball Champion Dominic Jentsch (GER) with 8:7.

Ten ball started today - many close matches in first round

Nick van den Berg (NED) was clearly favoured over his relatively unknown opponent Dino Cerimagic (BIH). But the Bosnian turned out to be anything but a victim to Nick. �I was happy that he made a mistake at 6:6�, van den Berg said after the match. �That allowed me to run that rack and another one to win the match. Dino has played very well and this victory was not easy for me�.

Almost the same scenario happened at another table at the same time. Scott Higgins (GBR) had to cross swords with Vittorio di Falco (ITA). In the beginning, things went in favour of the British player, allowing him a comfortable 5:1 lead over di Falco. But Vittorio did not think about leaving the table as the loser and he stroke back. Rack after rack went on Vittorio�s scorecard until the match was tied at 6:6. Then Higgins got momentum again and managed to cross the winning line by defeating di Falco with 8:6.

Other notable results are �Napoleon� Marcus Chamat (SWE) to just win his first round match over Denmark�s Jan Keller with 8:7. With the same result, Fabio Petroni (ITA) sent Albin Ouschan (AUT) to the loser�s side. Melissa Rademakers (NED) defeated 8-ball semi-finalist Petra Stadlbauer (AUT) with 6:5. She will play her sister Tamara in the next round of the winner�s side.

Women's and Wheelchair final 9-ball postponed
Changes due to technical reasons

The final matches in 9-ball for women and wheelchair players will be moved from Thursday to Friday, April 1st, 19:00. The reasons are resulting from technical conditions due to the live broadcasting for Eurosport of the semi-finals and final match in the men�s 9-ball division on Thursday.

Chamat and Chinahov lose before the quarter-finals

In the women�s division, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) defeated Sweden�s Louise Furberg with 7:2. At the same time, Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) won her match against Melissa Rademakers (NED) with 7:5. Both winning ladies will meet again tomorrow in the quarter-finals. Will Ouschan take revenge on Poikkijoki for the defeat she got in the 8-ball competition?

�Napoleon� Marcus Chamat (SWE) lost quite clearly with 4:9 against Kim Laaksonen from Finland. Laaksonen took a quick 3:0 lead over Chamat. When Marcus tried to fight back and closed the gap a bit by making the score 3:2, Laaksonen pulled out his best pool and won 4 racks in a row, leading 7:2. Chamat was trying hard to come back but in the end Laaksonen was the deserved winner with 9:4.

Mariusz Skoneczny (POL) won with a margin of 9:8 over Ruslan Chinahov (RUS) who seems to be out of luck this week. Knowing Chinahov, it can be easily seen that he cannot be satisfied with his achievements this week so far. Will he do better in the 10-ball competition? 10-ball starts on Wednesday, March 30th.

Artem Koshovyi - Ukraine
Koshovyi defeats Feijen

In the second winner�s round, the decision is taken whether the player will go to the single elimination stage of the best 32 players or whether he has to play another match to get there. Two of Europe�s sharpest blades have been sent to the loser�s qualification round completely unexpected.

�Terminator� Niels Feijen from the Netherlands had to play Artem Koshovyi from the Ukraine. The match started with no upsets or surprises. Both players managed to take their racks and did not let their opponent get away too far. Feijen was usually one rack ahead of Koshovyi. Then Koshovyi shifted into overdrive and turned his indicator lights left. At the score of 4:3 in favour of Feijen, he went ahead of the �Terminator� and was now the one who lead the match. �I think Niels did not play his best game�, a satisfied Koshovyi said after the match. �He made more mistakes than he normally does.� With that thought in mind, Koshovyi, who never won against Feijen, got a 7:4 lead. �I played him so often but I always lost. This time I really wanted to win!�, says the young Ukrainian. But I is not for nothing that Feijen is one of Europe�s best. He came back and tied the match at 7:7. �I did not want to lose again to him�, said Koshovyi, �I have lost so often with 9:8 or 9:7 against him�. This time, fate was in favour of Koshovyi. He won the next two racks and went triumphant into the round of the last 32 players. Feijen will need to win one more match in order to join Artem in that fine group.

Onur Yildirim - Turkey
�The Kaiser� Ralf Souquet will join Feijen on his way into the loser�s bracket. Ralf lost to Onur Yildirim (TUR) with 7:9.

Other notable results of today�s matches include Marcus Chamat winning over Oliver Ortmann with 9:4. Tomasz Kaplan (POL), newly crowned straight pool champion, was whitewashed with 9:0 against David Alcaide (SPA).

Konstantin Stepanov - Russia
Top Russian player loses two straight matches in 9-ball competition

Probably the most popular player who has already left the stage in the 9-ball tournament is Konstantin Stepanov from Russia. He lost his first match to Mario He from Austria clearly with 9:1.

In the loser�s bracket, he had to deal with Tomas Larsson from Sweden. Larsson took a quick 4:1 lead over Stepanov who did not really show much of his best game this week. The score went to 5:2 and 6:3. Then Stepanov managed to come back to 5:6, trailing only one single rack. But Larsson wanted that win. He went up 8:5, gave another rack to Stepanov and then finally won the match with 9:6. Stepanov has one more chance in the 10-ball event to prove he still belongs to Europe�s pool elite.

Manuel Ederer - Germany
Another drama happened on the loser�s side between Manuel Ederer (GER), a young German talent and a fairly unknown Jason Power from Ireland. Though Ederer is not yet 18 years of age, he already has an impressing vita in pool. He has already achieved six medals in the Junior�s and Pupil�s category at European Championships; four of these medals were gold medals. But this week does not look like his week yet. He was already down with 3:7 against Power when it appeared that he heard the wake-up call. He got his mind together and caught up rack after rack until the showdown was reached: 8:8, a hill-hill match. Maybe his experience or maybe his youth was the deciding factor � who knows. In the end he left the table as the winner, eliminating Power out of the 9-ball event. Ederer might still find his best game during the 9-ball event. His next opponent will be another Irishman, Paddy McLoughlin.
