Alcaide wins Dynamic Billard Treviso Open

In a more than thrilling final match, David Alcaide (ESP) won the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open against Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:6.

The final match was as high class as expected. Alcaide and Filler came up with a great performance and delivered some high class pool action. However, due to the pressure also some mistakes have been committed by both players.

The fact that the final match and the semi-finals are played with a shot clock does its share to even raise the pressure. Alcaide had the better start in the final. He ran away with 3:0 before Filler got started. But the young German hung in there. He used his chances whenever given and kept the match a close and thrilling affair.

After nine racks, the scoreboard displayed a 5:4 lead for Alcaide with Filler to break. The rack turned into a safety battle and actually it looked like Filler would be able to force Alcaide to commit a foul. Alcaide answered this by playing a deliberate foul and putting the 2-ball and the 6-ball together. The rack was dominated by tactical play. In the end, Alcaide pocketed the deciding ball and got to a 6:4 lead. That was one important point in the final match.

Instead of Filler levelling the score at 5:5, Alcaide was now 6:4 up with his own break shot to come. He had an illegal break and Filler cleared to stay close with 5:6. The next break was Filler’s and he was really unlucky. He had three balls down but the cue ball got kicked and scratched in the corner pocket. Again, Alcaide got away with a 2-point-lead with his own break shot coming up. This time, he capitalised from his break shot. He almost ran out of position on the 3-ball but Lady Luck was on his side.

Alcaide got on the hill with an 8:5 lead over Filler. Filler won the next rack before Alcaide got to the table with his own break, leading 8:6. Alcaide missed the 2-ball but left the cue ball very close to another object ball for Filler. The German kid used a rest but touched the 3-ball while pocketing the 2-ball. With ball in hand, Alcaide conquered the table, took the match with 9:6 and won his second Euro-Tour after 2009.

"Read More..." for the details.

In the first semi-final, David Alcaide encountered Mieszko Fortunski (POL). The Spaniard had the far better start and got a quick 6:3 lead over Fortunski. The Polish struggled a bit with his break shot. Either he had no ball down or he played an illegal break. This problem was the reason for Alcaide to gain his early advantage. But after a while, Fortunski got in better shape and pulled some racks from Alcaide since he committed several mistakes. The match was hill-hill with Fortunski breaking the balls in rack 17. Again, his luck left him and he had no ball pocketed, leaving a good position for Alcaide. Alcaide seemed to be ice-cold, getting to the table and clearing the rack ball after ball, winning the semi-final to take him into the final match. In the second semi-final, Joshua Filler had to deal with „The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED). Filler got into the match better and won some early racks taking a 6:3 lead over Feijen. But then Feijen shifted into overdrive and even overtook Filler with 7:6. The players took racks in turn and again, the match had a hill-hill situation after 16 racks played. Rack 17 was opened by Feijen. He had no ball down on his break shot but left nothing for Filler. A few safety shots were exchanged. Filler started shooting first, pocketing an extremely hard jump shot on the 1-ball. The audience was shocked when he missed the 2-ball right after it. However, another tough position for Feijen. The Dutch tried to pocket the 2-ball along the long rail but he missed. Filler had nerves of steel, got to the table and ran the rack for his 9:8 victory over Feijen.

Earlier today, some real heartbreakers occurred among the matches. In the quarter-finals, three out of four matches ended 9:8 and one was 9:7. Drama was on among the last eight players. Albin Ouschan (AUT) went hill-hill with Joshua Filler. At 8:8, Ouschan had the break shot. He broke the balls and had a nice layout with a good first shot. However, he got a bit weird position on the 4-ball and the consequently found himself with a tough but makable 7-ball. Whether it was the pressure, his nerves or something else will probably remain Ouschan’s secret. For a fact, he dogged the 7-ball and gave Filler an early Christmas present. The young German got to the table and only needed to pocket three easy shots to win the quarter-final over the reigning World 9-ball Champion with 9:8. Feijen and Fortunski were the other two players who just got over the finish line with 9:8. Feijen ousted Sebastian Ludwig (GER) and Fortunski pipped Marco Teutscher (NED) to the post. David Alcaide achieved a 9:7 over Konrad Juszczyszyn (POL) which took him into the semi-final match against Fortunski.

In the Dynamic Women Open, probably the biggest upset of the day was Kristina Tkach (RUS) handing a 7:3 defeat to Austria’s top star Jasmin Ouschan in the winner’s qualification round. In the same round, Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) managed to get the better of her German opponent Kristina Grim by a whisker with 7:6. Wesolowska’s teammate Monika Zabek (POL) had a good start, defeating Sara Rocha (POR) 7:5 and then Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER) 7:6.
Tomorrow, the Treviso Women Open will continue with the round of the final 8 players at 10:00 local time.

FRIDAY 26 NOVEMBER 2016 - PM REPORT

Wiktor Zielinski (POL)
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here.

Rough exit for Zielinski

One of the most tragic stories of the event was the exit of young Wiktor Zielinski from Poland. The 15-year-old boy from Poznan met Nick van den Berg (NED) in the winner’s qualification round. Van den Berg who belongs to Europe’s elite for many years now, had a really hard time with Zielinski. The match went all the way to 8:8. Zielinski had the valuable break in rack 17. He made two balls off the break shot and had an easy shot at the 3-ball with no problems left on the table. But he created a problem for himself, pocketing the 3-ball and hiding the cue ball for the 4-ball. He played a bad safety shot and van den Berg took the rack and won the match with the closest of all results, 9:8. Being sent to the loser’s side, Zielinski encountered no other player but current World 9-ball Champion Albin Ouschan (AUT). What an unlucky draw for Zielinski. As the match unfolded it also turned out to become a hill-hill thriller. Again, Zielinski had the break shot in rack 17. He broke and this time three balls went down. He could see the 2-ball but not play it in any pocket. However, the 9-ball way lined up for a possible but very risky combination shot. Zielinski knew he had to either make the 9-ball on that shot or he would probably lose the match since his opponent was Ouschan who is known to make use of any chance he gets. Zielinski could also have played a safety shot but he went for the risk. He missed the 9-ball and Ouschan ran the rack. Zielinski’s elimination in the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open was as close and as tough as it could get. The kid needs a bit of luck in the coming tournaments.

An early exit today was handed to „The Tornado“ Tony Drago from Malta. The Snooker legend lost yesterday evening by a hair’s breadth with 8:9 to Imran Majid (GBR). Today, Roman Hybler, the „Czech Attack“ made short work with him, taking Drago down 9:5. Drago will be joined on his way home by Daryl Peach (GBR). The former World 9-ball Champion got ousted by Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) 7:9.

Last 16 lineup
Mark Gray (GBR) v Marco Deutscher (NED)
Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz (ESP) v Mieszko Fortunski (POL)
Marek Kudlik (POL) v Konrad Juszczyszyn (POL)
Nick van den Berg (NED) v David Alcaide (ESP)
Albin Ouschan (AUT) v Wojciech Sroczynski (POL)
Joshua Filler (GER) v Maksim Dudanets (RUS)
Sebastian Ludwig (GER) v Mario He (AUT)
Alexander Kazakis (GRE) v Niels Feijen (NED)

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open will continue with the round of the final 16 players at 10:00 local time. At 09:00, the Treviso Women Open with a field of 47 players will commence.

THURSDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2016 - AM REPORT

Alexander Kazakis (GRE)

Several favourites struggle in early rounds in Treviso

Alexander Kazakis (GRE) has had a good day „at the office“ today. After having won the 10-ball Kremlin Cup earlier this month, Kazakis came here to Treviso with a lot of wind underneath his wings to play the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open, the final event of the Euro-Tour in 2016. He seems to be on a streak. In his first winner’s round match, Kazakis wasted no time with Guilherme Sousa (POR) and defeated him 9:4. In the next round, the opponent was punished even harder. Ryan Pisany (MLT) fell to the sharp blade of Kazakis and received the maximum penalty. 9:0 was the final result that put Kazakis in the winner’s qualification round where he will be up against Arjan Matrizi (ALB).
Former World 9-ball Champion Daryl Peach (GBR) did not catch that good of a day as Kazakis. He won his first match 9:4 over Adam Mscisz (POL) but then met Sascha Trautmann (GER). The German prove to be too strong for Peach today and showed no mercy for him. 9:3 was the final result that put Peach on the loser’s side of the draw.

Albin Ouschan (AUT)
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here.

Joining the list of the fallen heroes from today is Albin Ouschan (AUT), current 9-ball World Champion. He started with an easy prey in winner’s round one with a comfortable 9:4 victory over Mariusz Skoneczny (POL). In the next round, Ouschan stood against Andrey Seroshtan (RUS). That match went completely against the World Champion. Seroshtan dominated the table and in the end handed Ouschan a tough and painful 9:4 debacle. Seroshtan, who earlier today overpowered Andreas Madsen (DEN) 9:5 now will go against Jose Alberto Delgado (ESP) in the winner’s qualification round.

Aleksa Pecelj (SRB)
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here.

Another interesting encounter took place in winner’s round one between Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) and newbie Aleksa Pecelj (SRB). The 16-year-old kid from Serbia came here to Treviso for his first Euro-Tour experience and he came up with some impressive performances. In round one, he defeated Jorge Garcia-Fonseca (ESP) with 9:0. Then he met Stepanov who is constantly ranked in the top 32 in Europe since years. However, Pecelj did not show too much respect and tried to live for the moment. He used his chances whenever he got them and Stepanov committed some unnecessary mistakes. This combination lead to a score of 8:8 with Pecelj having the final break shot. He could not make a ball off the break but left no shot for Stepanov. The cue ball was hiding partly behind the 8-ball and he could not see the whole of the 1-ball. He played a push-out and left a tough position for Pecelj. The young Serbian decided to go for a combination shot that was very hard to make. Playing that shot in that situation would have probably not been the choice of many players. But Pecelj went for it and made it. He then used his chance and ran the rack to win with 9:8 over a disappointed Stepanov. In his next match in winner’s round two, Pecelj lost to Olivier Mortier (BEL) 7:9.

This year’s Mosconi Cup Captain for Team Europe, Marcus Chamat (SWE). received a painful whipping today from Hubert Lopotko (POL). In winner’s round one, Lopotko destroyed Chamat on table 1 and handed him a clear 9:5 defeat. Thereafter, Chamat went to the loser’s side and ousted Tom Bjerke (NOR) 9:6. Having received a walk-over in the next round, Chamat will be up next against Thomas Poeschl (GER) on Friday morning at 10:30 local time. On the other hand, Lopotko has made his way through to the winner’s qualification round by taking down Kristjan Kuusik (EST) 9:5 after the destruction of Chamat. At 13:30 tomorrow, he will face Stephan Cohen (nothing) for a spot in the single elimination of the event.
