Match 6 – Las Vegas Dice vs. Toronto Blue Sharks.

The Weeks action concluded with The Las Vegas Dice taking on The Toronto Blue Sharks.

Game One was a back and forth battle for the most part until Toronto finally took advantage of a Las Vegas mistake with just under a minute remaining, They calmly ran the final 9 points of the game using every second of the game clock to finish the final ball and take a 30-19 regulation victory and 2-0 match lead.

Game two needed a shootout to decide the points. Davis and Williams trailed 21-9 going into the shootout but managed to secure a point for the team by running 21 straight off the break and shoot and reaching 30. Toronto then came to the table needing only 9 points to secure their own point in the match. Morra and Klatt made short work of those to make the match score 3-1 Toronto.

Game three was all Las Vegas as Schmidt and Davis broke and ran the first 15 points of the game and then won a safety battle with Klatt and Hjorleifson to finish off the Canadians with a 30-0 regulation victory and earn 3 points for their team. Score now 4-3 Las Vegas.

2. Phoenix Fire 7 points
4. Houston Hustlers 4 points

Game four was all Las Vegas as the duo of Schmidt and Williams worked well together, however they could not finish Toronto off sending the game to a shootout at 27-6. Hjorleifson broke for Toronto but could to make his opening shot afterwards, ending the game. Score now 5-3 Las Vegas.

Game five brought singles action as Charlie Williams broke for Las Vegas but scratched and left the door open for John Morra to post a 19 point run before leaving the table with a jump shot facing Williams. Williams fouled and left Morra ball in hand to finish the shut out 30-0 gaining 3 points for his team in the match. Now 6-5 Toronto

Game six was a back and forth affair between Mike Davis and Jason Klatt, the game was tied at 12 but Klatt made the most of his opportunities and did not let Davis score from there, claiming the victory 30-12 in regulation and extending the Toronto lead to 8-5.

Game seven started off with John Schmidt getting 9 the hard way after making 2 continuous great shots to try and stay at the table. From there Erik put some points together himself before the game settled in to a safety battle. Regulation time expired with the score being tied 19-19 sending it to the shootout which ended abruptly for Toronto as Erik Hjorleifson did not make a legal break shot.

Game eight the teams went back and forth with Las Vegas leading most of the way, however they were not able to finish the game during the 15:00 game clock which they would have needed to send the match into the captains choice shoot out. They did however secure one extra point in the match for the shootout victory 24-22. Final match score was 8-7 Toronto for a 11-7 scoreline.

WPBL Bonus Ball - Pittsburgh vs. Houston, June 2, 2013

Match 5 – Pittsburgh Poison vs. Houston Hustlers.

Sunday’s action started off with an interesting match up with the Pittsburgh Poison up against the Houston Hustlers. The Hustlers fielded the youngest lineup in the league by far for week one as they were forced to replace injured veteran captain Jeremy Jones with young alternate Joey Gray.

Game one was won by Pittsburgh in Regulation as Houston had a tough time transitioning to the shot clock. Each Joey Gray and Chip Compton were victims of time fouls, which helped Pittsburgh to a 2-0 lead.

Game Two had the doubles pairing of Justin Hall and Joey Gray coming out firing, taking an early 24-0 lead, however Putnam and Smith came back to play a solid defensive battle to force the game to a shootout and only relinquish the single point to Houston. Score now 2-1

Game three was a lopsided victory for Pittsburgh as Smith and Ochoa took advantage of Houston’s continuing issues with the shot clock and scored the 30-3 shoot out victory. Lead now 4-1 Pittsburgh

Game four was won handily by Houston in regulation by Compton and Hall after playing some beautiful defensive shots. Final score 30-7 to close the first half at 4-3 for Pittsburgh.

Game five started the singles action with Shawn Putnam putting on a show against Justin Hall who had been looking like the strongest Houston player in the first half. Shawn took the game down in Regulation 30-12 to stretch the Pittsburgh lead to 6-3.

Game six was a defensive battle between Adam Smith and Joey Gray with it eventually going to a shootout where Smith took it down after Joey Gray scratched on his break and shoot opportunity. Score 7-3 Pittsburgh.

Game seven was a highlight fest as both Ochoa and Compton made multiple bank shots. The game would eventually go to a shootout with Pittsburgh leading 21-18, Compton made 7 points on his break and shoot opportunity taking the lead 25-21, Ochoa need just one sequence to secure the victory but was out of line on his Bonus Ball opportunity and surrender the one point shootout victory to Compton. Pittsburgh 7 Houston 4

Game 8 The final team game started with Pittsburgh just needing to make one ball to secure the match victory by avoiding the shut out.But they didn’t stop there, winning the game handily in regulation 30-6. Final match score was 9-4 winning Pittsburgh the additional 3 bonus points for a 12-4 scoreline.

WPBL Bonus Ball - Los Angeles vs. Chicago, June 1, 2013

Match 4 – Los Angeles Wave vs. Chicago Rockets.

With everyone still buzzing over the unbelievable record 60 point run by Thorsten Hohmann, everyone wondered how the second match up of the day between LA and Chicago could generate excitement.

On paper, Chicago looked to be the overwhelming favorite, with multi world champion Mika Immonen, US Open 9 ball champion and perennial Mosconi Cup veteran Rodney Morris, and British 9 ball ace Raj Hundal facing off against California favorites, the father and son duo of Oscar and Ernesto Dominguez, and super hot one pocket ace Louis Ulrich.

This match quickly showed how much influence One Pocket has on Bonus Ball, as both teams played strong safety games and had to resort to banks and kicks to get out of trouble and score points.

The teams traded the match lead. Chicago scored first with an overtime victory in the first team game to lead 1-0, but LA came back quickly with a sweep in the three doubles games, taking a sizable 4-1 lead. The arena was pretty fired up, with lots of Chicago and LA fans cheering their teams on.

In the singles games, Mika Immonen quieted the LA crowd defeating Oscar Dominguez to gain a point for Chicago. Score LA 4, Chicago 2. Raj Hundal had some good luck, as he only scored 3 points in a shootout to take a slight lead, but Ernesto Dominguez got hooked on the break, and had no shot. Raj hung on for a one point victory. Score LA 4, Chicago 3. Louis Ulrich showed his banking prowess, making a comeback to best Mika Immonen in regulation to up the LA lead to 6-3, leaving Chicago with the difficult task of having to shutout LA to tie the match.

In the final team game, Chicago won decisively, but could not pull off the shutout, and LA defeats Chicago 6-5.

WPBL Bonus Ball - Phoenix vs. Minnesota, June 1, 2013

Match 3 – Phoenix Flames vs. Minnesota Outlaws.

The Flames took on the powerhouse Minnesota Outlaws Saturday in an epic back and forth Bonus Ball match.

In Game 1 - the team game, Scott Frost came out strong and Phoenix jumped to a 21 to 0 lead. Scott was focused and in stroke. With team mates Manny Chau and Tommy Kennedy, they looked unstoppable as they quickly finished off Minnesota 30-3 regulation victory to take a 2-0 match lead.

Game 2 - Phoenix continued to pummel Minnesota as Scott and Manny defeated Minnesota’s World Champion players Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet. Phoenix powered to a quick 24/0 lead, but had to hold on tight as Minnesota fought back. Thorsten showed his strength with some serious bank shots, but Phoenix hung on in overtime for a 31/27 win to stretch their match lead to 3-0.

Games 3 & 4 had both teams in dead stroke as Minnesota’s Jesse Engel showed his steady shot making. Everyone seemed to adjust to the slick felt and tight pockets, and Minnesota took both games in regulation to take the match lead at 4-3 heading into halftime.

Game 5 - Scott Frost continued his power pool and defeated multi - world champion Thorsten Hohmann head to head celebrating with an enthusiastic high kick to the air to retake the lead for Phoenix 5-4.

Game 6 - Manny Chau pulled perhaps the upset of the day by rolling over the great Ralf Souquet 30 to 3 in regulation singles play to stretch the Phoenix lead to 7-4.

Game 7 - Jesse Engel pulled out a close overtime win to keep Minnesota’s hopes alive, besting Tommy Kennedy to gain a point for Minnesota. Score now 7-5 Phoenix,

Game 8. The match was on the line here. Minnesota played sharp, and used great safety play to pull off a win in regulation and tie up the match at 7-7. The match now went to a tie breaker shootout.

To break the tie, phoenix picked Scott Frost to play against Thorsten Hohmann in the shootout.

Hohmann shot first for the visitors, and the arena was completely spellbound as Thorsten put on an unbelievable exhibition of shooting with a Bonus Ball record run of 60 points. Everyone was blown away by his amazing performance. Scott got a bad roll on his break, leaving him no chance to chase Thorsten’s epic run, as Minnesota secured the 3 bonus points for winning the match by a final of 10-7.

High run for the season wins a $5000 bonus. Thorsten set the bar very high with this run - also the first complete game run out in the history of Bonus Ball.

WPBL Bonus Ball - Miami vs. Philadelphia, May 31, 2013

Match 2 – Miami Cruise vs. Philadelphia Aces.

The second day match up featured the Miami Cruise ( Corey Deuel, Hunter Thompson, and Jose Parica ) against the Philadelphia Aces ( Darren Appleton, Brandon Shuff, and Stevie Moore ).

In Bonus Ball, the opening game ( a team game with alternating shots ) sets the tone for the match. Both teams showed opening night jitters, but the Philly players showed more cohesiveness, as they conferred on shots and showed a little more offense than Miami to take the first game 30 – 19, and take the lead 1-0.

Games 2, 3, & 4 are scotch doubles.

Game 2 -Corey Deuel was a little slow getting in dead stroke, but he and Hunter Lombardo squeaked by Appleton and Shuff in overtime, to tie it up at 1-1.

Game 3 - Appleton and Moore were smooth and precise as Miami was still trying to get it together. The ax fell here as Jose Parica made a mental error shooting the purple into the opponents pocket, giving Philly ball in hand. In Jose’s defense, this is a new game, and the players are still getting used to it. Score 3-1.

Game 4 – Brandon Shuff and Stevie Moore were in dead stroke, as Corey Deuel was still searching for momentum. Philly ran over Miami in this game, 30-3 to extend their lead to 5-1.

Games 5, 6 & 7 are singles play.

Game 5 – Corey finally hit stride in the first head to head singles game, as he out “ Deueled “ hot shooting Brandon Shuff in an overtime game. Great stuff here as both players were popping really tough shots dead center into the tight 3 7/8” pockets. They got into a safety battle and the game went into overtime. Brandon was hot and looked like he would catch up as he ran the rack, but the bad luck of the break got him leaving him no shot, and the win went to Corey Deuel. Score 5-2.

Game 6 – Darren Appleton came out with a 24 point run. Hunter Lombardo fought back, but Darren countered with a superb run-out. Darren was focused, serious, and in dead stroke in this game, showing you why he is a multiple world champion, running the score to 7-2.

Game 7 – Last chance for Miami to catch up. Needing a shutout for a three point game, Jose Parica came out firing with a 16 point run, and held on with some great safety play to beat Stevie Moore in overtime 24-13, and a single point to make the score 7-3. That sealed the match for Philly.

Game 8. With the match in hand, Philly loosened up, and powered their way past Miami for a decisive victory, winning the match 9-3.
