Ivo Aarts - Netherlands

Aarts defeats Chinakhov in second winner’s round

In an encounter that was completely turned around, Ivo Aarts (NED) outscored former Junior World Champion Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) with 8:4.

In the beginning, the match looked much more promising for Chinakhov than it did for his opponent. Chinakhov took a quick 3:0 lead over Aarts and everyone expected a nice walk in the park for the Russian. But then the tide turned in the match. Aarts opened his account and won his first rack, just to take a time-out right after that. Whatever happened during the time-out, it certainly worked in Aarts’ favour.

Ivo came back and played a completely different game. He managed to tie the match at 3:3. Then, Chinakhov tried to stop Aarts’ run and made it 4:3 in his favour. However, that was the last rack that the Dutch junior player allowed for Chinakhov to get. He ran rack after rack and benefitted from Chinakhov’s mistakes and his own strong performance. 8:4 was the final score in favour of Aarts who will go straight into the winner’s qualification round. Chinakhov will et another chance in the loser’s bracket.

Other notable results include Mario He (AUT) creaming Antti Mattila (FIN) with 8:2. Marcus Chamat (SWE) handed a doughnut to Olivier Mortier (BEL), winning with 8:0. Mortier made several grave mistakes while Chamat left a very focussed and ambitious impression on the spectators. Chris Melling (GBR) also continues his way on the winner’s side, destroying Jani Siekkinen (FIN) with 8:4.

EPBF EURO TOUR - Engert wins over Petroni

Thomas Engert - Germany

Thomas Engert remains victorious in hill-hill battle

In a thriller that lasted over two hours, Thomas Engert (GER) won against Fabio Petroni (ITA) by the skin of his teeth with 8:7.

Both players have been around in the international pool billiard circuit for many years now. They know and respect each other’s game. No wonder, the start of the match was characterised by defensive play and several errors from both players. Petroni was able to take a 2:0 lead over Engert. He seemed to get a better start but at a score of 2:1 for him, he missed an unbelievably easy 8-ball, giving Engert the chance to tie the match at 2:2. In the 5th rack, Petroni again missed a makeable 8-ball. Instead of leading 4:1, the Italian was now down to Engert with 2:3. But he kept on fighting, and so did Engert. Petroni was again able to gain a 2 game advantage over his German opponent when Engert tied the match again at 6:6. Then the inevitable final of the match was reached. Both players met at 7:7, being on the hill. With Engert to break, the final rack of the match started. Engert pocketed two balls on the break shot but had no good position for the 1-ball. He started a safety battle which Petroni accepted. After some safety shots were exchanged, it was Engert to start pocketing balls. He had a tough rack to go and he made no more errors. 8:7 was the final result in favour of Engert who will play in the 2nd winner’s round tonight. Petroni is sent to the loser’s bracket where he will try to make it to the final 32 players single elimination stage.

Other notable results include Kevin Becker (GER) defeating 10-ball World Champion Huidji See (NED) with 8:7. Martin Steinlage (GER) sent the winner of the last Euro-Tour, Richard Jones (GBR) to the loser’s side with the same result. Another 8:7 winner was Marcus Chamat (SWE) sending Mariusz Sniegocki (POL) to the loser’s bracket.

EPBF EURO TOUR - 7,000 miles to play the German Open

Chamaka Atapattu - Sri Lanka

“I love to play here. My dream came true!”

Out of the 172 players of the Dynamic German Open, Chamaka Atapattu from Sri Lanka definitely had the longest trip to come to Brandenburg, Germany. Residing in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Atapattu always watches the Euro-Tour events on the internet via LiveStream. “It’s a really good experience for me playing here” stated Atapattu after losing his first match to Balasz Miko (HUN) with 4:8. The match did not go too well for Atapattu, while Miko had the better nerves and proved to be the better player in that matchup. His positions with the cue ball were more precise and in the end he had not too much trouble taking the victory into his account.

“I could also play in Asia, but the Euro-Tour is simply awesome. It is the best tour in the World and it features the strongest players.”, said Atapattu. “The president, Mr. Gre Leenders, helped me a lot to get me my visas and other things and made it possible for me to attend the Euro-Tour. I am very thankful for that and I think it is a great service. I feel very welcome here. To me that is a dream come true”, says a very likeable young man from Sri Lanka. “Here I can compete with the best players in the World like Tony Drago and Ralf Souquet”. When asked if he is intending to play future events of the Euro-Tour, Atapattu stated: “I will definitely try and come here more often. I hope I can make it to the Hungarian Open in a month’s time”. Chamaka Atapattu is definitely a gain for the Euro-Tour.
