Roy Kimberley - England
Kimberley keeps on rolling at the Midlands 9-ball Open
The BWPPA held it's 2nd event of the 2011 season on the 16th/17th April 2011 with the Dynamic Billiards Midlands 9-ball Open held at Rileys Birmingham. The tour was hit by a few absences due to illness as with it’s season opener with some of the regular tour players unable to compete due to illness. Despite this, the event still attracted a strong field of 14 players, and there was some great pool on show as usual at these events. “The Sandman” Roy Kimberley increased his lead at the top of the rankings, with a victory in the Main Event. Roy had a tough 2nd round encounter with Scotland’s Matt Duffy, Kimberley’s experience, and a kind run of the balls, told in the end as he won 7-5, he then comfortably dispatched Tony Southern 7-2 in the semi-final
Kimberley faced Duffy again in the final. Duffy struggled past Frankie Gillen 7-5 in his opener, then following his loss to Kimberley, he then beat another tough competitor Danny Luton in a match that went to hill-hill, before coming through 7-6. In the semi-final he faced No. 2-ranked player Aslam Abubaker, and dispatched him 7-4. Abubaker had whitewashed Southern 7-0 in an earlier game and looked in fine form.
The Main event final between Kimberley & Duffy was a repeat of the earlier, match and Duffy quickly opened up a 3-0 lead, and looked in ‘dead-stroke’, but he missed a simple 9-ball to extend his lead, and Kimberley pounced on that.
Kimberley had a fair run of the balls in the final, and it was a great, hard fought match, which eventually went to Kimberley with a 7-5 victory.
After the event Roy said “I had some nice rolls today in a few of my games, but I played pretty solid in parts so it was a nice win.”
In the Challenge Cup Phil Hendrickson beat Frankie ‘Hot-wheels’ Gillen 5-3.
Videos of the final are currently being produced and will be posted to YouTube and linked on www.pro9.co.uk as soon as possible.
The next event is the Dynamic British Wheelchair 10-ball championships, which will be held at Rileys, Barnsley, on 11-12 June 2011.
