Topic: Golden Breaks-Rule Change Needed!!!!!

Hi Willie, long time no see. I refereed for the first time in Stafford and was asked to pay attention to some specific rules by the TD.

1. Base of cueball must be behind the headstring.
2. No touching the rack after the triangle had been lifted. Many players try and roll the 1 back nto the pack if it has slipped out, but this technique can make the wingball pop out just enough so it flies in on the break.
3. No deals to be made on respotting golden 9s - if it goes down it stays down.

Great experience doing the semis and the final, thanks to Gary Bullock and Kevin Uzzell for making my life nice and easy.

Personally, I think that if a match is not refereed the opponent should rack the balls, and no deals on 9s should be allowed.

Interesting - and what exactly does 'wingball pop out just enough' mean. Pop out from where? Are you referring to it not being frozen to the ball immediately behind and in the 4th row?

Also, why not just make an announcement to the effect of 3 if there is actually an official line on this, which would clear up some of the ambiguity about this?

re: 2. If the wingball is not frozen, it goes in the pocket alomost 100% of the time, regardless of where you break from. When a player rolls the 1 back to make it stick to the pack, he/she may (intentionally or not) make the wingball roll out at the same time, thus having an unfair advantage on the break.

re:3. Nowhere in the World Standardised Rules is it written that deal making is allowed on golden breaks, therefore unless otherwise specified by the Tournament Director, no deals can be made, and the 9 stays down.

If the referee racks, he has the last word and if the player is not satisfied... tough! (Rule 2.7)
If the opponent racks, he is the substitute ref!!
We have rules (WPA), why not just play them and forget about deals etc.?

I agree with Peter - rules are there for a reason. The odd golden break adds a bit of spice to the game!

mind you, as a ref now I would say that!
