Just wondered if any of the pro9 guys play this game on the computer?

It's a good little game and I've just found out that there's a pretty big community for it and they host regular tournaments (including a world virtual 9 ball championship).

I think it's pretty accurate to real life pool and snooker but it would be interesting to see what guys with more experience think.

Obviously, you can't beat the real thing!

Played in online tourns mostly 9 ball...it was great.
had to catch meself on as it was taking over my life hehe!
I have tried to get back on recently but ive i prob with the wireless router, something to do with needing ports opened etc so i cant be bothered....anyway, like you say, cant beat the real thing!

I agree that this game is probably the best you can get in terms of a simulation and using the mouse to stroke the cue works well.

I used to play this game a lot when it 1st came out and it's great to play against other people in a multiplayer game.

Only real drawbacks it has was that sometimes the spins are exaggerated somewhat especially when you do full power and full draw! And there's never any kicks.

Jump shots are fun though and if you have a look around the net do a search for virtual pool trickshots to see some of the mad things this game can do in practice mode!

This game could also be used as a training tool in practice mode when you turn on the tracking lines too.

Opening ports is pretty easy. First find out the IP of your computer by doing the following:
Start>Run
Type cmd then enter
at the prompt type ipconfig
note down the ip address

Then follow the instructions with your router to access the configuration settings. Look for a setting called something like 'applications and gaming' or 'port forwarding'. When you find it you simply need to specify that the relevant port number directs TCP traffic to the IP address of your computer. There is also a setting for UDP traffic too so if you are not sure which one to set then set both. Then when traffic hits your router from the outside world against that port your router will deliver the data to your computer.

Great game.

Its where i realised my son could be good at the game when he ran 18 balls at straight pool when he was only 8 years old and it was his first time on the game.

As it happens my other half found the disk last week and was about to bin it.

Not sure if you can still buy it new, perhaps Dave could sell it in the shop!

Think i may have to get it up and running again.

Perhaps we could start a GB9 / Pro9 league and manage it on http://www.leaguerepublic.com

Sorry getting a bit carried away... lol

But would be cool.

Cheers for that Riggers, I'm sure that'll help setting it up on my PC.

You can still buy VP3 but I think you need to buy the download version to play online (it's only about 15 quid anyway). You might get a discount if you own the CD version, I can't remember.

Having a quick look today and there seems to be quite a few leagues and tournaments already.

I'm going to put my name down for the 2008 world championships!

You can get windows mobile versions of the game and also Nokia Series 60 Symbian versions, the last i heard or seen about the java version was a few months back and i don't think it's even been released yet or if they have any plans to actually release it...

It's very difficult at the moment to make a decent mobile 3d game in J2me because most of the phones are shite and not powerful enough to handle them. Things are looking up with some hardware accelerated devices now but operators won't let you release a game unless it supports X-amount of devices.

Got VP3 it's quality game. Anyone beat Curly on Hard or Good Luck?

Another thing is how do you do the jump shots. I can do them very well in real life but I'm hopeless on the computer it goes off the table or not at all. Do you need to select a special cue for jump shots?

Anyone know?

I beat Janette Lee on mine back in the days as she was the original pro in the game.

To do the jump shots just raise the butt of the cue to anything like 45 - 65 degrees and then put a touch of bottom on it. Use shot amplify aswell as that will help you get the power right... Best bet is to just go in practice mode and turn on the tracking lines 'T' then have a mess around with the force of the shot and spin etc.... hold 'F' with the tracking lines on and move the mouse back/forwards to change power then you can actually execute that shot by pressing space if you want to... Try jumping the white at an angle into the rail and see what happens :) you can even get it to run along the wooden rails.

I'm ranked 2nd in the world at 9-ball in the tournaments section (mal255). :D Wish I was as good irl. I seriously play this game everyday.

Would love a league!!!

I'm sure there was a Pro9'er that had won a tonne of prizes (really valuable stuff) after designing a whole load of incredibly elaborate trick-shots and entering them into a variety of trick-shot categories in a VP3 competition!

he really cleaned up!

Any way of getting VP3 to run on Vista?? I've can get it to install but when playing the table isn't visable which makes it kinda difficult.
