If we're talking about what 9 ball is supposed to have, and playing 9 ball properly (re: generous bags) then why are they playing with Magic Ball Racks?

The rules of proper 9 ball say, "a triangle is used to rack the balls" - it doesn't specify new racking templates anywhere, but if you change one aspect of the game like this, then you affect the whole dynamic of the game. With near perfect racking you no longer need a "proper" and skillful 9 ball break - that's why Matchroom - the real World Pool Championships organisers, have moved the rack forward every year since 2000.

WPA Equipment Specification

9. Pocket Openings and Measurements
Only rubber facings of minimum 1/16 (1.5875 mm) to maximum ¼ inch (6.35 mm) thick may be used at pocket jaws. The WPA-preferred maximum thickness for facings is 1/8 inch (3.175 mm). The facings on both sides of the pockets must be of the same thickness. Facings must be of hard re-enforced rubber glued with strong bond to the cushion and the rail, and adequately fastened to the wood rail liner to prevent shifting. The rubber of the facings should be somewhat harder than that of the cushions.

The pocket openings for pool tables are measured between opposing cushion noses where the direction changes into the pocket (from pointed lip to pointed lip). This is called mouth.

Corner Pocket Mouth: between 4.5 and 4.625 inches (11.75 cm)
Side Pocket Mouth: between 5 and 5.125 inches (13.0175 cm)
*The mouth of the side pocket is traditionally ½ inch wider than
the mouth of the corner pocket.

Vertical Pocket Angle (Back Draft): 12 degrees minimum to15 degrees maximum.

Horizontal Pocket Cut Angle: The angle must be the same on both sides of a pocket entrance. The cut angles of the rubber cushion and its wood backing (rail liner) for both sides of the corner pocket entrance must be 142 degrees (+1). The cut angles of the rubber cushion and its wood backing (rail liner) for both sides of the side pocket entrance must be 104 degrees (+1).

Shelf: The shelf is measured from the center of the imaginary line that goes from one side of the mouth to the other - where the nose of the cushion changes direction - to the vertical cut of the slate pocket cut. Shelf includes bevel.

Corner Pocket Shelf: between 1 and 2 ¼ inches (5.715 cm)
Side Pocket Shelf: between 0 and .375 inches (.9525 cm)

Standard size for pro events in states are 4 1/2 inch same in Philippines ..
But the tables they use in china and middle east play like 5-6 inch makes a big difference at this level ... ESP when your guaranteed balls on the breAk.. Least in states and Philippines and any match room event you feel your involved in the matches because not guaranteed balls on the breAk and the pickets are 4 1/2 .. Simple as that really.

This wouldn't be too bad if they put the 9ball on the spot least then the breaks better..

Here people break soft so the one balls stays over middle bag and wing ball flys in every time. Thats not pool to me.

But this problem with our sport you go America ,Europe, middle east,Asia,Philippines, and they all play different rules and different break rules in every country..some tournaments cue ball fouls only, some all ball fouls, some play 10ball call shot others play 10ball not call shot, some rack the balls high, some rack them low with magic rack, some tournaments play with standard pro pockets others use bigger pockets, the professionals are not asking for tight pockets which gets silly we just wanting consistency in the game and the rules ,shouldn't be too hard to get.. But in the pool world it seems a impossible task ...

Just frustrating at times when you travel the world week in week out doing something you love for a living only for goalposts to be changed all time and a different set of rules.. Until globally we standardize the rules it will continue in this way ... I just wish match room run the whole pool world then it would become a Hugh sport as they show the rest of world how to run tournaments.

Some tournaments are good and you know what to expect but some tournaments/ organistations seem to never learn from there mistakes. It is what it is.

Oh and to top it off we need to open a local bank account to get our prize fund lol. But can't get our money until 4-5 weeks later plus we will get screwed on exchange rate .

Great post !!

Playing in a world ranking event and people saying a groupe of death, I mean, the players are there for a reason and I find it a little dis respectful to the other players who have earned th right to play at the event who havebeen drawn in "apparently" easiy group !

As for the bag situation - I have never heard a wineries of an event complain about the size of the holes !!

U obviously don't travel to the events that's why ya clown..

As for the groups there no easy groups no matter what conditions or rules ,a wpa event with 64 invited players always going to be tough no matter what, but at least the better players can have a edge if the rules and conditions are consistent.

Am sure if they made the hole bigger at golf tiger wouldn't have been so dominent..

..... well most players are not intelligent enough to know how changes affect the game because most play at a low level so makes no diff to them how the balls are racked and need big pockets to pot balls lol.

I saw a program about Jackie Stewart a week or so ago.. When he got the drivers together the sport was brutal, there was no safety at the circuits. Although he was one of, if not the best, he was crucified in the press, they called him a chicken, but the drivers agreed to hear what he had to say and to all take a vote on whether they would race at the next meeting. Although some voted against, because they feared for their career, the majority voted to boycott the meeting to improve safety. The sport was changed forever. Although individually they felt they could do nothing, together they changed the sport.. because they were the sport.

Upcoming tournament details, prompt match reporting, exclusive images by talented photographers, superb articles by expert pundits, active pool related forums, player profiles and a very sophisticated membership - basically, an incredible information resource for the American style game in Europe.
Since it launched, PRO9 has become compulsory reading, not just for the UKs pool players, but to hundreds and thousands of pool obsessives from around the world every single day.
PRO9s members range from professional pool players, cue-sports enthusiasts, club managers, tournament organisers, pool fans and aficionados, as well as various "movers and shakers" in the cue-sports field, including entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector, as well as magazine editors and television sports promoters.
Growing more and more popular every single year, PRO9 is the best placed vehicle for the promotion of your pool club, billiards brand, associated products, services and opportunities in the truly massive pan-European billiard market.
