What's the deal Oliver? Have you had to do it in TWO clubs this year? How many runners are there?

Yes, although we were in the two Liverpool clubs last year too - when Solihull replaced some of their American tables with English ones, we had to move to a two-venue city out of necessity (if anyone knows of a club with 18 or more tables, let me know...). But Grand Central and Wavertree are two great clubs who did a fantastic job in hosting us last year, and so I'm certainly looking forward to going back there next weekend.
As for runners - we have 22 universities, 52 teams and 170+ individuals involved in this year's event - another record year! The final total of players could be close to 200 (some students elect to play in only the team event).

Also forgot to say - the individual semi-finalists at this year's event will be eligible for a place on the GB9 Tour for next season.

Would anyone like to pick a winner? For the team and individual?

The tournament has kicked off and is currently in the early rounds of the singles competition. With the seeding system in place, most of the Galacticos of student pool are not on show yet, however Will Jerram, England Team player at the Student Home Internationals, won his first match 5-2. Wavertree and Grand Central, as with last year, have been excellent hosts. [ This message was edited by: OJD on 2010-11-26 12:26 ]

Is it a logistical nightmare running the same event in two venues, or does the tournament lend itself quite naturally to splitting like this? How are you doing it?

I think superb organisational skills are the key here, Dave Seriously, however, it is a little bit of both - we have a team and individual championship, so we alternate each in sessions, with certain parts of the draw (eg top half of individual qualifying round 1) in each venue. The team event is split into groups (with double elimination deciding placings in each) and so we play certain group sessions in certain venues. It's scheduled in advance and we also ensure that players will only require one change of venue maximum (often not at all) per day, and we allow time for that. Obviously the latter stages are then played to a finish in one venue (singles in Wavertree on Saturday evening and the team in Grand Central on Sunday). Clear as mud?! The schedule is nonetheless very tight however, with 170+ players, so even in two venues we need every table we can get!

Top seed Luke Fleet (York) has crashed out first match, blowing that section of the draw wide open. Will Jerram (Edge Hill) also lost his second match, 5-1, to Dale Prime (Nottingham), who in turn lost his next match. No 2 seed, and Pro9er Lee Mager (LSE), aka Osomabinpottin, came through his match 5-3 and will now fancy his chances.

The team event has started now, with an early surprise result in Nottingham 3rd beating Abertay 1st.
