Friday-Saturday 25-26 August 2006

Scottish Pool sensation, 17 year old Jayson Shaw.

Jayson Shaw the 17yo Scottish sensation claimed the last remaining place into the IPT World Open in Reno next week by beating Rico Diks of the Netherlands, Shaw was devastating from start to finish and even earned high praise from Tony Drago.

Qualifying for the World Open was no fluke either as the list of players he beat along the way will tell you, Andy Barnett, Christian Reimering, Andy Worthington, Vilmos Foldes, Mark Gray and of course Rico Diks to qualify..

Click on "Read More..." for the details.

Ahmad Miraghi

Friday morning saw 27 players at the players meeting which was done by Chris Billings he went over the rules then gave out the sheets for the first games although five players would have a bye into round 2, those included Dimitri Jungo, Dirk Embacher, Andy Worthington, Patsy Fagan and Spyros Mixahlidis, for the players who did not get a bye it was right down to action for Kevin Uzzell who had no trouble disposing of Ahnad Miraghaie with a 10-0 scoreline, Martinho Correia looked to be coasting when he was 5-1 up on Germany's Michael Schmidt, Correia then looked certain to make it 6-1 when he rattled what was an easy 8-ball, this then must of played on his mind because he was to miss more as the match went on and went on to lose 10-7, Mark Grey had a struggle to overcome Antonio Fazanes and eventually won 10-8, An all UK affair between Steve Higton and Gareth Esprit saw Higton come out the winner 10-6, Manchester's James Kay had a very tough first round against USA player Gary Abood, who had flown in from Ohio especially for this event, Abood went on to beat Kay 10-4, Steve Brown just lost out to German player Christian Reimering 10-8 whilst new Scottish sensation Jayson Shaw saw of the challenge of Andy Barnett, the game of the first round had to be between Rico Diks and Hungary's Vilmos Foldes with Diks coming out the 10-7 winner.

Marcus Chamat and Mika Immonen

In the next round on the winners side Kevin Uzzell went down heavily by 10 racks to 2 to eventual qualifier Dimitri Jungo whilst Mark Grey surprisingly went down to a 10-3 defeat against Marco Tschudi, in a close fought match former snooker professional Patsy Fagan was up against Steve Higton it was nip and tuck throughout but Higton just edged it 10-8.

Christian Reimering

In the last 8 on the winners side Andy Worthington was on top of his game and hardly missed a ball against Tschudi winning 10-4 Worthington said afterwards I felt like I could not miss, next an impressive performance saw Steve Higton put USA player Gary Abood into the losers bracket beating him 10-5 whilst Rico Diks was putting eventual qualifier Jayson Shaw into the losers section by a scoreline of 10-7.

Steve Higton

Next was the winners semi-finals and Swiss player Dimitri Jungo was to hot for Andy Worthington beating him 10-4 whilst Rico Diks was seeing off the challenge of Steve Higton also 10-4, so the final of the winners section would see the winner heading off to Reno Nevada next week for the IPT World Open so a lot at stake for these players, Jungo was much too quick out of the blocks and soon had Diks struggling to keep up a fine performance from the Swiss player saw him win with a comfortable scoreline of 10-3.

Jayson Shaw

Onto the losers section and wins for Ahmad Miraghaie, Roschkowsky, So Shahriari, Mark Grey and Vilmos Foldes who sent Kevin Uzzell home 10-8, Martinho Correia was also sent home by Reimering also 10-8, in the last 8 in the losers section Ahmad Miraghaie's win against Germany's Christian Reimering was probably the result of the round, Miraghaie was trailing 4-1 at one stage but manged to fight his way back and take out his German opponent 10-8, another German player went through this time as Roschkowsky put out So Shahriari 10-8, onto the last eight of losers bracket saw Miraghaie's challenge come to an end as he went down 10-3 to swiss player Marco Tschudi, next one of the pre tournament favorites Mark Grey was up against Jayson Shaw, Shaw was straight out of the blocks winning the first rack and running the next 5 and eventually lead 7-1, Grey looked to be down and out but fought back bravely and made it a close fight but in the end it was Shaw who went through 10-7, Semi-Finals next and Andreas Roschkowsky saw off Tschudi 10-4 and Jayson Shaw just proved too much to handle for the experienced Foldes so it was Shaw through to face the challenge next of Andy Worthington, Again Shaw was of to a flyer 3-0 up in no time at all and Worthington just seemed to be sitting back and watching this teenage potting sensation and enjoying it although to be fair he had no choice because Andy was struggling with his break and kept coming up dry and Shaw just kept clearing up, Shaw finally won this one 10-4, in the other match up Roschkowsky saw off the challenge of Steve Higton and finally eliminated him 10 racks to 5, Next up for Roschkowsky was Jayson Shaw and surly a tough one for this whizz kid, but names do not affect Shaw at all and soon Roschkowsky was sat in his chair and applauding the shots that Shaw was playing it was amazing to see, Shaw was sensational in this match and beat Roschkowsky by an amazing scoreline of 10-1 and reach the 2nd qualifier game of the day, but would the fact that he was playing Rico Diks bother him as it was Diks who had sent Shaw to the losers section earlier in the day, well it certainly was not evident as Shaw went into a 5-1 lead and never looked like missing until Diks had clawed his way back to just 8-6 behind and for the first time Shaw looked rattled and if Diks had taken advantage of his opponents mistakes the outcome may well have been different because at 9-8 it looked certain to be going 9-9 as Diks left Shaw in snooker which was hard to hit, but Shaw not only hit it but left Rico with no pot on to take and all he could do was roll his ball against the 8-ball to make it awkward, but Diks played the shot to hard and just left enough room for Shaw should he pot his last ball which he did with no problem and left himself with an easy 8-ball for the match and win his way to Reno 10-8, It was then Jayson looked shocked at what he had done and could not believe he was going to Reno but it has to be said he deserved to qualify and not one there could say different, even Marcus Chamat and Mika Immonen who were there practising together stopped to come and watch the final racks and were as impressed as everyone else.

Mark Segal and Jayson Shaw

Jayson told me afterwards he cannot wait to get there and play and I for one cannot wait to see him play against the worlds best, Good Luck in Reno Jayson on behalf of all at Pro 9.
