I've received an update about Ted's health from Joyce, and as I'm sure a lot of people here would like to be kept informed I've been given permission to reprint it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ted went into Wythenshawe Hospital on the 25th April and underwent a battery of tests including Lung function test, X-Ray, MRI scan and ultra-sound; it was diagnosed that his left Common Iliac artery was blocked to a length of 6cm and his right Common Iliac Artery is starting to block. (From the heart the Aorta is the main artery which then splits into two Common Iliac arteries which are major blood vessels.

Obviously at some stage he will require bypass surgery and we have known about this for some time but we thought the surgery would have been on smaller vessels around the heart. The problem is that we didn't know which arteries required treatment as the arteries were tending to spasm as opposed to blocking up which is the case now. As these are major blood vessels the Hospital had intended to start with angioplasty with stents as this is far less invasive than bypass surgery. Last week Ted went for a 'pre operation check' and following an ECG it was confirmed that he has suffered a heart attack (we think this happened the previous week following one of his regular chest pains) and his heart rate at the moment is down to 44 beats per minute (normal male is 70). To put that into context, in a very fit athlete a low heart rate anything less than 60 is ideal, in Ted's condition it is a major concern.

The situation now is that that Vascular Surgery have referred Ted back to Cardiology to see whether they can continue with the procedure as they do not like to operate so soon after a myocardial infarction. He now has a further consultation on the 2nd July when we will know a lot more. Currently we are complaining to the NHS as we all feel Ted should be in hospital as he is very poorly and the two departments should be moving more quickly. Sadly, we feel this is quite indicative of the NHS.

One of the main symptoms following an attack and ischaemic heart disease is sleep which I am encouraging and only wake him for meals etc. Complete rest is naturally a good healer in this scenario and hopefully he will be able to undergo surgery very soon. I will keep you informed of progress.

Kind regards,
Joyce
