English Straight Pool does have its difficulties though. The biggest thing that can end a run is a rail shot. So many tables are put together incorrectly or are flat out just a bad product to begin with. With English Pool certain shots need to be played slowly down the rail to realistically be accepted and if the table isn't accurate the ball can just turn away from the rail and end your run. You have to look for opportunities to break these balls out whilst leaving insurance and if there is no way about it there have been times when I would rather double the said ball, particularly if the ball is close to the middle pocket. Just go down to your local pub on a free pool night and try the game and you'll see its not as easy as its being made out to be.

Agree 100% with the difficulty aspect, no arguments there. I have made a 20-something break playing standard 14-1 rules on an English table, and one of my mates, who's not that good at all, got over 30 using the proper rules. Yes it's harder equipment for a variety of reasons, but it's not impossible, so why change it at all? All I'm saying is - you should either play according to the actual rules or don't call it 14-1. If it's the hardest game in the world it doesn't matter - the point is the rules are so fundamentally different that it should be called something else.

This is a completely different game to American 14-1 and should not be compared.

What is for certain is that this is an incredible achievement from Mick and has my complete respect.

I feel like I've contributed all that I can to this topic but as my final wish I just hope that Mick Hill will record his record breaking run if / when it happens. I know that he has the confirmed record but he wants 10 more points to tie the unofficial record. Do us all a favour Mick as we don't have a single run on YouTube that I could find before!

hi all... just feel like i should say a few words. not sure which is harder in terms of the both versions i guess thats a topic for debate.

what i would like to clear up is that although i was lucky enough to have epa members there, i still recognise darrens run of 466 as the record and that it was i was trying to achieve on the night. i only realy started the run as a bit of fun, however when i got to 200 i started fancying the job...lol.. i would like to break 500 so il be playing more 15-0, 14.1- straightpool however it is interpreted in the future. i dont realy see these type of things/achievements having to much relevance, i see it more as a personal achievement and satisfaction. a gain daz score of 466 is the record in my mind and thats the score we have to try and beat..

mick

just to add to that, a journalist kindly suggested we do a piece for bbc sport with the world champs just around the corner we thougght it would be a good idea for myself and the game.
it has always been called 14.1 on the small table(agree dont know why..lol) so she printed what i asked.

mick.

Hey Mick, very well done on your high run sir and hats off to you for your sportsmanship in recognising Daz's run of 466 as still being the record to beat on the small tables :)

To save everyone alot of confusion, I would like to mention that the the blackball version of straight pool is called "Shoot out"... I used to play it occasionally for fun on weekends during the 1 year that I played reds and yellows on Sam Newell's pool team which was fairly frequented by Ronan McCarthy.

As far as I remember, Sam Newell's high run at "Shoot Out" is/was over 200, but it may be more now since this was 11 yrs ago.

You're right in saying 14.1 Straight Pool can't really be compared to "Shoout Out" because of the difference in equipment, etc, even though the object is the same.

Willie
