Local favourite Craig Osborne takes Ipswich Masters 2008 title

2008 Ipswich Masters Results

The mention of a cup of tea with bacon sarnies for breakfast and a free buffet lunch, along with some top class 9-ball action was too inviting to miss, so at 6am on a Sunday morning I was in my car, driving through the pea-soup-thick fog on my three hour journey to the Ipswich Masters along with 36 other pool mad souls, plus their assorted friends and girlfriends.

I'm glad I did too... The club is a splendid, airy and light affair with a huge glass frontage and vast playing area. It seems like an age since I've seen everyone and it's been a fun day already.

PartyCasino.com MOSCONI CUP - Double J Grabs Last Spot

Matchroom Sport can announce that the final two spots on the American side for the forthcoming PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup will be filled by South Carolina’s Earl Strickland and Jeremy Jones (Texas).

Both players line up in an American team that is hoping to win the Mosconi Cup outright for the first time since 2005. Taking place at the Hilton Hotel, Portomaso, St Julians, Malta from December 11 – 14, the event features two five-man teams playing a series of singles and doubles matches over four days.

Strickland, 47, is playing in his 13th consecutive Mosconi Cup, a record for the event, and has won a fantastic 37 points from 56 matches. ‘The Pearl’ insists that he will be back to his imperious best come December, having put the health issues that dogged him a few years ago very much behind him.

“I’m not just a pool player, I’m an athlete,” said an ebullient Strickland.

“I’m running four miles every morning and doing 500 sit ups a day and I’m practicing seven to eight hours a day.

“I’m a more intelligent player than most of these guys, I’m working hard and I think I’m close to being back to my very best.

“The Mosconi Cup is my kind of tournament and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the USA in Malta.”

Despite his well-documented bust-ups at the Mosconi Cup, Strickland’s record in the event is the best of the 61 players who have participated in the competition in its 14 year history.

"SILKY" PERFORMANCE TAKES SCOTTISH TITLE

Pat Holtz won the 2008 Carlsberg Scottish Open 9 Ball Championships with an enthralling 12 racks to 8 victory over Sunderland's Chris Cowie to take the £700 first prize at Styx American Pool Club in Kirkcaldy. A smaller than expected field turned up on the opening day of the event to test their skills but what was lost in quantity was more than made up for in quality of play.

As ever, the tournament was held in 2 parts. First was the Double Elimination phase of the event with the matches being races to 9 in the Winners' Bracket and races to 8 in the Losers' Bracket until 16 players remained - 8 in each bracket. These 16 players would then move on to the Single Elimination phase of the tournament that would give us our winner.

GeneralPro9's World Pool Player Rankings 2008
WORLD EXCLUSIVE

World Pool Player Rankings According to Pro9

Who is the best pool player in the World? Now we know!

When someone introduced a new thread on the forum entitled "Why are we the best in the world" I decided to investigate the subject more and promised to create a ranking list which to me, would make more sense that all the others that are in existence.

There are only a few truly "world events" in which players from all around the world take part so I worked on these.

I used the points system that is used by the EPBF in their rankings as I think that it is as good as anything else.

The events that I studied were the 3 World Championships, 8 Ball, 9 Ball and 10 ball and then added the Predator 10 ball championship, the Qatar Open and the US Open.

Over 470 different players took part in these events and all of their results have been computed to reach what I think is a pretty good record of how the international players have done during the past year.

It was a shame that the top Filipinos didn't take part in the last WPC 10 ball as we may have had some different results, but who can say.

It is pleasing to see that Daryl and Daz figure so highly in these rankings and it is no surprise to me to see that Souquet is the overall best in the world.

Hurry, only a few entries remaining in Ipswich

This event looks like being a storming success, and a lot of fun for the players too! There's a very reasonable 10:30/11.00am start for the 40 players making their way to Ipswich, and the likelihood of a bargain tea and bacon sandwich on arrival too.

Every penny of the £25 entry fee will be returned in prize money, and there's a free buffet provided for the players too.

It's definitely good value for money as there are Group stages (Races TBC), then the top 2 from each group go through to the Last 16 straight KO (Races to Eight).

Tapped tables - Eurotour and GB9 Style, racked 1 ball high - great practice to keep you match fit - Drop Ozzie a text on 07896 532978 or enter in the Pro9 forums.
