Philippines up for the job
WITH THE 2013 World Cup of Pool set to take place in London from 17-22 September, its no surprise that leading UK bookmaking firm William Hill have installed the super-talented Filipino pairing of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza as joint favourites at 8/1 along with the USA.
The deadly duo from Manila, currently world ranked #2 and #3 respectively, are certainly one of the in-form pairs competing for the $60,000 top prize when 32 two-player teams from all over the world convene at the York Hall for the six day event.
Although the Philippines have won this event on two occasions in its seven year history, both times it was the pairing of Pinoy pool legends Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante who claimed the glory.
The nearest Orcollo has come was a runners-up spot in 2010 when he and Roberto Gomez were well beaten by China, while Corteza will be making his second appearance in the competition after partnering Orcollo in Manila in 2012.
Last September, with the weight of expectation on their shoulders, they flopped, going down 8-7 to a giant-killers Switzerland in the first round.
I am very honoured to be given another chance to represent the Philippines in the World Cup of Pool, said Corteza.
To be honest, last year was like a blur and it was over before we knew it. The pressure from our home crowd was a little too much to handle but hopefully this time we can perform better.

Matchroom & Diamond agree three year deal
AFTER A HIGHLY successful partnership in 2012, Matchroom Sport can announce that DIAMOND BILLIARD PRODUCTS INC. will be the Official Table Supplier to their three annual pool tournaments in a recently signed long-term agreement.
With three events in the calendar, action gets underway next month with the World Cup of Pool at the York Hall in London. That is followed by the 21st edition of the World Pool Masters in Barnsley in October. Finally, the year culminates in Las Vegas when the 20th anniversary Mosconi Cup takes place at the Mirage in early December.

THE 2013 WPA WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS THIS WEEK
If you like the very best in professional pool squaring off for ultimate supremacy on the felt pitch, then the next 11 days will be nothing short of Valhalla.
The 2013 World Pool-Billiards Association(WPA) World 9-ball Championship is set to kick off this week in steaming hot Doha, Qatar, and, judging by the current player list, this years event is shaping up to be the best one yet.
128 players from over 40 countries will descend upon Dohas Al Arabi Sports Club looking to book their spot in the pool history books. But whoever finds themselves atop the winners platform hoisting pools biggest and most prestigious prize after the finals on September 13th, will have to contend with loads of pressure and drama along the way.
Defending champion and World number one Darren Appleton of Great Britain looks set to make a spirited defense of his title. Appleton won his first World 9-ball championship in June, 2012, with an incredible 13-12 win over Chinas Li Hewen, in one of the most memorable and stirring finals ever witnessed in professional pool.

Richard Twomey wins the T9B End Of Series Masters Tournament
Twomey is the T9B Master
Total9ball finished it's current amateur season yesterday with The Masters event held at the fantastic St Albans Hurricane Room. The event was different to anything T9B has run previously, with longer match races and a mid-session interval in each match. 27 players competed, each with one aim, to become the T9B Masters Champion. Once again there were lots of new faces which is great and from their positive feedback Im sure we will see them again.

Morley International are pleased to be hosting one of the biggest money-matches of the year. 2 former IPA Tour amateur champions face off at BlackBall rules for a minimum pot of 10,000 on the 31st of August.
Derby's Jack Whelan travels up to Morley in confident mood, having been last year's Golden 8 ball singles, team and mixed doubles champion. However, Blackpool's Lee Anderson recently reached his first main event final on the IPA tour and was himself recently part of the victorious team at the Golden 8 ball tournament, and only losing to the eventual winner in the semi final of the singles.
Both players love to play an attacking game and always look for a finish, so expect fireworks from the word go. A massive crowd is expected on the day and the atmosphere will be nothing short of electric.

All wheelchair players invited to compete as the BWPPA season continues
The 2013 continued at Event 3 as Aslam Abubaker took the Kamui 9 Ball Shootout with a win over No.1 ranked Roy Kimberley.
Kimberley maintained the top spot, but with just 2 events to go, the battle for the top spot at the end of the season and the Predator Ikon-2 cue that goes with it, could come down to the last ball of the season. The rankings are based on best 4 out of 5 events, and with the final event being event 5, only this seasons points will count, and provisionally Kimberley and Abubaker have identical records this season, with a win, a runner up and a semi final each. Tony Southern although no 2 in the rankings is a further 15 points back on this seasons points alone. Irelands Fred Dinsmore is also in contention if he is able to make the last 2 events.
After this event, later in the year we will be moving to our permanent home for the tour at Stoke Mandeville, you can see the latest pictures of the venue being refurbished here, although we will hopefully have an event each season in Barnsley or a Rileys venue.

Archer set for record-breaking 17th appearance
AMERICAN pool legend Johnny Archer will be making a record-breaking 17th consecutive PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup appearance when the 20th anniversary event takes place in Las Vegas in December with the added pressure of captaining the American side.
The 44 year-old from Georgia, who went undefeated at last years event, winning five out of five matches, has a huge job ahead of him as he attempts to lead the US to victory for the first time in four years.
I am so excited and I feel like Im playing better now than I ever have in my career, said a delighted Archer.
It is very important for the US to win this time because we havent won since 2009 and we need to establish ourselves again as the dominant team, just like back in the 90's.

Barry Hearn and Jeanette Lee enter Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame
The Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame is honored to welcome two of pools most media-savvy personalities in 2013. The United States Billiard Media Association today announced that womens champion Jeanette The Black Widow Lee and British promoter Barry Hearn have earned induction into the sports hall of fame by becoming the 61st and 62nd members.
Born in London, Hearn began his professional career as an accountant. In the early 70s, Hearn bought several billiard halls around London, and then expanded into event promotion and television with the formation of Matchroom Sport.
In 1994 Hearn branched out into American pool, staging the Mosconi Cup, a Ryder Cup-style 9-ball event pitting the top players from the U.S. against the best of Europe. For 20 years, the Mosconi Cup has been aired live and in its entirety throughout the UK, and as edited programing throughout Europe (and on occasion in the U.S. Since 1994) Hearn has also staged the World Pool Masters (20 consecutive years), the World Pool League/World Cup of Pool (1998-2013), and World Pool Championship (1999-2007).
Incredibly, Matchroom events have never featured an entry fee, and have distributed nearly $9 million in prize money. Additionally, more than 800 hours of Matchroom events have been aired live throughout Europe and Asia, with thousands of additional hours of packaged programing being aired throughout the world. It could be argued that Hearns efforts through Matchroom have played as important a role as anyones in the development of international pool competition.
