Richard Twomey wins the T9B End Of Series Masters Tournament

Twomey is the T9B Master

Total9ball finished it's current amateur season yesterday with The Masters event held at the fantastic St Albans Hurricane Room. The event was different to anything T9B has run previously, with longer match races and a mid-session interval in each match. 27 players competed, each with one aim, to become the T9B Masters Champion. Once again there were lots of new faces which is great and from their positive feedback I’m sure we will see them again.

So on to the action, the first set of matches began at 10am, matches in the first round were races to 11 racks plus the handicaps, competing players played the first 10 racks of each match then an interval and the match was then played to a conclusion. It seemed in each match there was one player who couldn’t wait for the interval and one who didn’t want the break as they were building up a head of steam. Players who have either won an event or finished runner up this season were seeded in the draw against the rest of the field. The first round results are below:-

(Seed) Phil Wildman 11 v 5 Ken Ng
(Seed) Aslam Abubaker 6 v 11 Tony Phillips
Mark Hughes 11 v 6 Adam Wale
(Seed) Chris Buckmaster 11 v 6 Lionel Brown
(Seed) Luke Rollison 9 v 11 Paul Taylor
(Seed) Jaspal Bamotra 8 v 11 Tony David
(Seed) Mark Parker 11 v 7 Dean Thompson
Dave Evans 11 v 9 David Verey
(Seed) Tom Staveley Bye
Nick Hampton 11v10 Karim Moloo
(Seed) Rich Twomey 11 v 5 Del Sim
Alexandra Cunha 11v 5 Ernie Mulryne

Two other matches were drawn at random as 2nd round matches.

From round two match races were increased to 14 racks, this giving players a chance to really hit top gear and looking round the St Albans club there was some top quality pool on show. The winners for these matches would be guaranteed £40 prize money and the player defeated were seeded into round two of the plate competition. The most dramatic match for the round was the epic 14v13 win for Paul Taylor over Tony David, great to see both players back in competitive play. Phil Wildman got the better of Tony Phillips 14v10, Richard Twomey eliminated the only female entrant Alexandra Cunha from Portugal 14v6 while Courtney Symons and Kev Kelleher ended Paul James and Adam Richardsons event respectively. Chris Buckmaster looked to be on top form as he beat Mark Hughes 14v7 and Tom Staveley was a 14v10 victor against Nick Hampton. Mark Parker has to be Total9ball's most in form player at the moment and it was going to take some performance to beat him based on his current form. Dave Evans was his opponent in this round and Dave showed his class racing into a large lead in the first session, Parker fought back but it was all in vein as Dave cashed in 14 racks to 10.

So just eight players remaining and they were some on the best amateurs Britain has to offer.

Chris Buckmaster taught Phil Wildman a lesson winning 14v8, Buckmasters break was working very well as he broke dished plenty of racks. Dave Evans booked his place in his first T9B event Semi-Final by beating Paul Taylor 14v11. It was clear Richard Twomey was loving the longer matches as he played some impressive 9ball despatching Tom Staveley 14v9. Kev Kelleher with a large handicap shared the first few racks against Courtney Symons and lead by over 10 racks only to end up falling short as Symons made an impressive comeback winning 14v11.

There were two mouth watering match ups in the Semi Finals. Chris Buckmaster v Dave Evans and Courntey Symons v Richard Twomey. At this stage it was hard to pick a winner with 3 regular T9B Event winners and Dave Evans playing the best pool I have seen him play and full of confidence after beating some very talented players earlier in the event.

Both Semi Finals were very close matches with Chris Buckmaster winning by 4 racks and Richard Twomey winning by 2 racks.

The stage was set a Chris Buckmaster v Richard Twomey final, with this being a level handicap match both players agreed to reduce the race to 7. Twomey was flying and ran out a 7v5 winner in high standard match (Video of this match will be available soon).

Watch the video of the final match.

Richard Twomey was crowned The T9B Masters Champion 2013 and awarded the beautiful glass trophy. Twomey looked full of confidence from the first ball he hit right through to the final 9ball potted, a win full deserved by The Master... Richard Twomey.

In addition to the main event there was a 16 player plate event with a total of £120 paid out to the Winner, Runner Up and Semi Finalists in prize money. Well done to Tony Phillips for winning the plate event beating Nick Hampton in the final 7v6. Alexandra Cunha and Kev Kelleher were the Semi Finalists.

The usual thanks go to St Albans Hurricane Room for the use of their fine facilities, to Nicole Hansen for a smoothly run competition once again, to Dave Knight for taking the photos, to T9B's sponsors, Kamui, Sanctuary Cues, Ultimate Breakmaster and finally to the players who supported this event.
