FILIPINO CAPTURES THE 2012 CHINA OPEN WITH A BRILLIANT 11-9 WIN OVER TAIPEI'S LU With a grand finale performance that spoke of true greatness, the Philippines Dennis Orcollo capped an amazing week in Shanghai, winning the 2012 China Open Sunday afternoon with a brilliant 11-9 win over never-say-day Lu Hui Chan of Chinese-Taipei in front of several hundred people at the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium arena.
Anyone who witnessed Orcollo’s efforts out on the TV table today realized soon enough that they were watching a virtuoso at work. Brilliant creative shot making, tenacious offense and defense, terrific concentration and the ability to absorb pressure were all on display from the 33 year old Filipino. The match nearly became a runaway but the fact that it wasn’t spoke more of the courage of Lu, who did himself proud by battling back when it looked like he was finished.
But the beauty of Orcollo’s massive victory in China didn’t emanate from this one match. Orcollo spent the last four days grinding out some of the most hard core wins of his career. The field that descended on Shanghai was deep and at every turn players were leaving pieces of themselves out on the tables. Orcollo actually lost his first match in the group stage 9-8 and had to win two tight matches on the losers’ side to make it to the round of 32.
In the knockout stage which began Saturday, Orcullo put in yeoman’s efforts in taking down three top Chinese players, all of whom brought their A-games to the arena. Today in the semi-final, Orcollo whipped Taiwan’s red hot Chang Yu Lung. And when it came time for the final, the Filipino was primed and ready. And so was Lu.
The match was high quality from the start as the pair split the first six racks, complete with two break and runs each and with both players potting extremely difficult balls.
It was then that Orcollo decided to put his foot to the floor as he went on a seven rack tear, executing creative combinations, kisses, rail first kicks and pots. Up 9-3 he was clearly in the zone and putting on a master class.

ORCOLLO, CHANG, AKAKAGARIYAMA, LU MAKE THEIR MARK In what was a brutally taxing and hard fought day of the very best in professional pool in Shanghai on Saturday, the 2012 China Open Men’s tournament has been whittled down to the final four. And fittingly, each and every one of the four participants in Sunday morning’s semi-finals earned their spot the hard way.
In the first semi-final which begins at 9:30am Shanghai time(GMT +8 ), the Philippines Dennis Orcollo will take on red hot Chang Yu Lung of Chinese-Taipei. In the second semi-final to follow, Chinese Taipei veteran Lui Hui Chan will go up against the 2011 World 9-ball Champion, Yukio Akakagariyama of Japan.
Each semi-final match will be a race to 11, alternate break. The finals will take place at 3:30pm later on Sunday.
The Philippines Orcollo put in a serious workmanlike day today against an onslaught of hard core Chinese pool talent. He first defeated China’s Fu Jianbo 11-4, then China’s Dang Jinhu, 11- 9. He then moved on to the quarterfinals where he beat China’s gutty Han Haoxiang 11-8, who fought all way to the end.
“All of my opponents today were very tough,” Orcollo said. “But I played good today. I have good concentration, my focus is good right now. This is a really big tournament because of all the good players here from all over the world. I just have to play my game and not think about winning, just concentrate and play one game at a time.”

There's nothing like being prepared, and Rob Pearce seems to be excelling in that department, already announcing full details for the third edition of the Golden 8 Ball tournament - slated for June 2013, and once again returning to the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool.
Event Organiser and creator Rob Pearce stated; “The Golden 8 Ball tournament positions itself as a prestigious pool competition which aims to provide the best possible playing conditions, coupled with a bit of wow factor!
“We’re an independent tournament that is open to any pool player, regardless of any associations, governing bodies or organisations that they may belong to.
“Having been bowled over and inspired by the spectacular ‘Grand National’ tournament in France, I wanted to create a similar event that makes our players feel special.
“We may be way off anything like the Grand National as yet, but it’s a start in the right direction and it will always remain my vision.”
Enjoyment is certainly what this weekend is all about, and with an even bigger guaranteed prize fund this year, there's already something to shout about in 2013.

UNHERALDED WU GRABS A SPOT AT THE EXPENSE OF LUI Yes, perseverance does indeed pay off.
Wu Jing, the 12th ranked female player in China, had played 2009 World 9-ball Champion Liu Shasha on numerous occasions and never tasted victory against her famous compatriot. But tonight on the TV table inside the Shanhai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium, the very unheralded Wu finally pulled it off. And what a time to do it.
In a do or die match to see who would advance to the final 16 knockout stage and who would go home, the diminutive Wu played lights out pool and thoroughly outplayed Liu, winning the match going away 7-2 and qualifying for the big stage of the 2012 China Open.
The win was clearly one of the biggest of Wu’s career. The best the 24 year old from Fujian province had previously done was the final 16 in this year’s World 9-ball, and the quarters at last year’s Philippine Open. But it was the opponent and the circumstances that had her beaming from ear to ear afterward.
“I’ve played Liu Shasha many times in the past and I always lose,” Wu said after her win. “This time I just said relax, believe in myself and I have a good chance to win. I’m very happy right now.”

This is the 7th annual running of this long-standing tournament which has, in previous years, including participation of pool luminaries such as Mark Gray, Tony Drago and Niels Feijen.
In 2011 this event was held in December, but this year it has been moved forward and the Russian Pyramid Tournament starts on October 29th, and players for the American Pool discipline need to arrive/register on the 31st October.
It's impossible to stress how highly this event is regarded in Moscow, although the fact that it has been proudly called "the Wimbledon of Billiards" by one Russian pundit should give you an idea, and the first events were actually held inside the Kremlin Palace!

HONG KONG'S KWOK STUNS WORLD NUMBER 1 APPLETON After a very busy day 1 at the 2012 China Open , it’s delightfully clear that the coming three days will bring us plenty of nail biting drama, and edge of your seat matches.
In the evening session alone inside the very chilly Shanghai Pundong Yuanshen Stadium, seven out of the 24 matches on the men’s side went to a one rack decider. That’s nearly 30% of the matches that headed for the cliff. You don’t have to own a sports book to know that the odds of something dramatic happening on the way to the title on Sunday are pretty darn good.
Perhaps the biggest upset tonight was Hong Kong’s Kenny Kwok coming from behind to take down the current World 9-ball Champion and World number 1, Darren Appleton, 9-8. Kwok was behind 8-6 before tying up the match, then he broke and ran for the surprise victory. The Hong Kong native advanced to the final 32, while Appleton will get one more chance on the losers’ side on Friday.

AS THE CHINA OPEN GETS UNDERWAY THIS WEEK IN SHANGHAI, ENGLAND'S CHRIS MELLING IS LOOKING TO REPEAT HIS BREATHTAKING PERFORMANCE OF LAST YEAR Anyone who happened to catch Chris Melling’s performance over four days last year in the China Open in Shanghai knew right away that they had seen something special. The Englishman, who was twice a world champion in English 8-ball and had, at the time, only been playing competitive 9-ball for two years, was literally oozing with confidence all week. Everything about him—the way he walked around the table, his extremely fast play, the way he stared down layouts and especially the audacious way he potted difficult balls and moved the cue ball around—spoke of a man with a winning attitude. He never gave his opponents any breathing room, pounced on the smallest of mistakes and quickly put racks on the board.
After mowing down the likes of the Philippines Lee Van Corteza, Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann and the Netherlands Niels Feijen, Melling obliterated Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Kai Lun 11-3 in the final for his first ever major 9-ball crown and pocketed $40,000. At the time even Melling was impressed by what he had just done.
“That’s the best I’ve ever played,” the ecstatic Englishman said moments after lifting the trophy. “I’m not saying I’m a great player. But there’s a difference between being a good player and being a great player. A good player can play well in the pool room and in small tournaments. Great players can win under pressure in an atmosphere like this. I’m just beside myself right now. Absolutely unbelievable.”
