Team Philippines A - Efren Reyes & Francisco Bustamante. Defending Champions Topple Out -Indonesians Break Pinoy Hearts
THERE WAS a big upset at Robinsons Place in Manila Wednesday night, as defending champions Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante (Philippines A) departed the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool, beaten by the better side on the night.
For Ricky Yang and Mohammad Zulfikri of Indonesia, it was a great night as they went right into the lion’s den and performed well in front of an all-Filipino crowd in excess of 2,000.
8-6 was the scoreline and although the match contained plenty of nerves and errors, it was hard to beat as sporting entertainment. The crowd were on the edge of their seats throughout, willing their heroes who could not quite deliver the goods at the critical moments.

Team Philippines B - Roberto Gomez in action today in Manila. Philippines B Join Bata & Django - Taiwan Pair Look the Part
DENNIS ORCOLLO and Roberto Gomez have made their way through to the second round of the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as they laboured to overcome Croatia in front of another huge crowd at Robinsons Place in Manila.
The score was 8-4 but the Croatian pair of Phil Stojanovic and Karlo Dalmatin will rue their missed opportunities as a little bit of inexperience let them down.
Orcollo was presented with a superb crystal trophy in the arena in advance of the match in recognition of his superb win at the World Pool Masters in Las Vegas back in May.
There was big expectation as usual with another 2,000 plus crowd hanging off the balconies at the Mall but they were quieted as the Croatians stuck with their more illustrious opponents and found themselves all square at 4-4 at the half way point.
Dalmatin, the talented but inexperienced debutant is feeling the heat and a foul when his shirt touches a ball while cueing, gives the ninth game to the Philippines and takes the wind out of Croatian sails.
The Philippine pair started cut breaking and while it is a part success, the mistakes of their opponents allow them to coast to victory in what was a tricky encounter.
"When you're there on the TV table it's different to the practise table,” said Orcollo.
"This format is really hard to play a hard break as you can make one ball but it can still be illegal.
"Now we can adjust for the next match and if the safety break doesn't work I will tell Roberto he can use the Weapons of Mass Destruction!"
Gomez added; "We're happy to win the first match but it was very important for us. The crowd gives you pressure but we can control our nerves. I think we can play better than this.
"Dennis made three illegal breaks and I made one but we still plan on using the soft break but next time we will put a bit more power in it.
"We were still trying it as we were ahead at the time but we still haven't figured it out. Maybe if we were behind we would use our power break.”

Team Philippines A - Efren Reyes with Referee Michaela Tabb . Philippines Put Thailand Lights Out - Souquet & Ortmann March on
BUOYED on by a massive crowd at Robinsons Place Mall in Manila, defending PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool champions, Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante overcame a false start and a 15 minute power cut to extinguish Thai hopes and move into the next round where they will face Indonesia.
Expectations were high from the immense crowd inside the venue, estimated at over 2,000, and the atmosphere was incredible.
Bustamante broke off and made an illegal break but before the rack could be completed the power in the arena went and the players were forced to sit in their chair for a quarter of an hour while it was restored.
The Thais cleared the table and broke and ran the next to silence the crowd. The Filipino duo looked slightly apprehensive under the huge pressure of the crowd, but they took the next two racks to ease the pain.
The reigning champs then settled into it and took the next three racks to put the pressure firmly back on the Thais. Nerves crept in as the home team took the next to send the crowd wild.
Another illegal break from the Philippines in the next gave the Thais the rack but that was their last contribution to the match as the champions took the next three racks to make it through to the next round and set up an all-South East Asia clash with Indonesia.
"It was very difficult as they had us 2-0 in a race to eight. We thought it was alternate break but it was winners' break and we didn't know that!’ said Bustamante.
"My partner played great and without Efren we wouldn't have won the match. My break wasn't good and this was a surprise as Efren always wants me to break every time but I never made a ball on the break.
"We always try whoever we play but everyone here is a good player. I've played the Indonesian players in tournaments but never in doubles. If my partner plays like that again then we will win,” he added.

FRANCISCO Bustamante hopes he and Efren Reyes can claim the World Cup of Pool title for a third time. The PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool begins on Tuesday at Robinson’s Place in Ermita, Manila, Philippines, with Bustamante and Reyes aiming to win the competition in front of their home fans for the second year running. “It was huge for us to win in the Philippines last year as it was held here and it brought a lot of pride to the Philippine nation,” said Bustamante, who, with Reyes, also won the inaugural tournament in 2006.
“We’re practising every day, especially since winning last year and we were delighted to win the title – it’s a big deal for us.
“Now I’m trying to correct my break because of the problems I had with it last year.”

Roy Kimberley won his fourth BWPPA main event in a year this weekend at Rileys Wavertree, but he had to do it the hard way after he lost his opening match 7-5 against current wheelchair English 8-ball World Champion Gary Swift. Kimberley however beat Mark McNeil convincingly 7-3 to go into the quarters. Scotland’s Matt Duffy also had to come through the one-loss bracket after he lost 7-3 to Aslam Abubaker, the Glaswegian made his way into the last 8 brushing aside Adam Pearson 7-1. Elsewhere in the main event, the surprise package of the Darlington Cup Shaun Madin tasted revenge at the hands of Matthew Gleaves “the Mole” running out a comfortable 7-1 victor. Madin did however reach the quarter-finals in the main event, before being beaten 7-5 by Gary Swift, his performance in the last 2 events was enough to see him catapulted up 9 places in the BWPPA main event rankings to #5 following his appearance in the final at Darlington. Frankie Gillen also finds himself outside of the elite top 8, after he lost 7-4 to Adam Pearson and 7-1 against Shaun Madin.

 | JONATHAN MATHERS - IN THE CHAIR |
Photograph ©Andrew Warden/belleza-photography.co.uk - used by Pro9 with permission. JONATHAN MATHERS - IN THE CHAIR
At the midway point in Season Three, arguably the most important season in the history of American Pool in Great Britain , talk amongst the players is already centring on the pitfalls, the possibilities, the perils and the promise regarding their beloved sport and where it’s headed. There’s no doubt whatsoever that the current incarnation that boasts the title of ‘National Tour’, the GB 9 Ball Tour, has taken the task of getting 9 Ball to the masses by the scruff of its collar in boldly moving houses but the question now is, are we on the right track to lavishly furnishing this new house in order to make it a home?
The man with that answer is of course 39 year old Jonathan Mathers; researcher for Birmingham University by day, American Pool fanatic by night and during whatever time in between, the Chairperson of the GB 9 Ball Tour. “I’m not the boss of GB9 or the committee”, Jonathan is keen to point out as we sit down over a coffee, making me wonder if I’d sat down at the wrong table, until quickly following up that statement with the self-deprecating if slightly ominous, “I just keep a strategic eye on things”.

MATCHROOM SPORT can announce that England’s Karl Boyes, the current European No.1 ranked player, is the first man named to take part in this year’s PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup.
For the 27 year-old it crowns a remarkable run that saw him switch codes from the small table English 8 Ball game to ‘American’ pool in 2005. Since then he has established himself at the highest level, winning a host of titles along the way.
‘The Mosconi Cup is my ultimate ambition and I can't wait. Getting a place in the team is even better than winning the World 8 Ball Championship as the atmosphere is electric,’ said an ecstatic Boyes.
