Philippines B Join Bata & Django - Taiwan Pair Look the Part
DENNIS ORCOLLO and Roberto Gomez have made their way through to the second round of the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as they laboured to overcome Croatia in front of another huge crowd at Robinsons Place in Manila.
The score was 8-4 but the Croatian pair of Phil Stojanovic and Karlo Dalmatin will rue their missed opportunities as a little bit of inexperience let them down.
Orcollo was presented with a superb crystal trophy in the arena in advance of the match in recognition of his superb win at the World Pool Masters in Las Vegas back in May.
There was big expectation as usual with another 2,000 plus crowd hanging off the balconies at the Mall but they were quieted as the Croatians stuck with their more illustrious opponents and found themselves all square at 4-4 at the half way point.
Dalmatin, the talented but inexperienced debutant is feeling the heat and a foul when his shirt touches a ball while cueing, gives the ninth game to the Philippines and takes the wind out of Croatian sails.
The Philippine pair started cut breaking and while it is a part success, the mistakes of their opponents allow them to coast to victory in what was a tricky encounter.
"When you're there on the TV table it's different to the practise table,” said Orcollo.
"This format is really hard to play a hard break as you can make one ball but it can still be illegal.
"Now we can adjust for the next match and if the safety break doesn't work I will tell Roberto he can use the Weapons of Mass Destruction!"
Gomez added; "We're happy to win the first match but it was very important for us. The crowd gives you pressure but we can control our nerves. I think we can play better than this.
"Dennis made three illegal breaks and I made one but we still plan on using the soft break but next time we will put a bit more power in it.
"We were still trying it as we were ahead at the time but we still haven't figured it out. Maybe if we were behind we would use our power break.”

The heavyweight Taiwanese pairing of Chang Jung-lin and Ko Pin-yi put in an excellent performance to brush aside the challenge of Malaysia and advance to a second round meeting with Japan.
Despite their standing as one of pool’s major nations over the previous two decades, Taiwan have never featured in the World Cup of Pool as a succession of lack-lustre pairings have made little impact on proceedings.
2010 though looks a different story with former two-time World Junior Champion Ko teaming up with Chang Jung-lin who has won a slew of major titles in Asia over the past few years.
Malaysia was represented by the perennial Ibrahim Bin Amir and Lee Poh Soon but neither carried sufficient fire power to deal with their opponents. The Taiwanese ran away with it with their opponents winning racks at 2-1 and 6-2.
With 32 teams representing 31 countries – home nation Philippines has two sides in the competition – the World Cup of Pool sees the gathering of some of the most decorated stars of the pool firmament. The event is taking place at Robinsons Place, in Ermita, Manila.
With a total purse of $250,000, the winning pair split $60,000 between them while first round losers are guaranteed $1,500 each. All the action will be carried live on Solar Sports in The Philippines and other broadcasters across the region.

Poles Through as Malta Fold - Japan Win 8-7 Thriller
THERE WAS more heartbreak and drama in Manila as matches continued at the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool on day two. In the first match of the 3.00 session, Japan eliminated unfancied Slovenia who pushed them all the way, while Poland came from behind to cash in on some errors and book a place in the last 16.
For the Maltese pair of Tony Drago and Alex Borg, the match represented their best chance of progressing in the competition following two 7-8 defeats at the hands of the USA in previous years.
Malta took the early 3-1 lead over the Polish duo of seasoned Radoslaw Babica and youngster Mariusz Skoneczny, who was making his debut in the competition. The Maltese were always one step ahead as they got the score to 6-4 to give themselves a real chance. That’s when things started to unravel.
Misses from Borg gave the Poles the chances they needed and they picked up the pace, winning four consecutive racks as Malta wilted. Poland finally ran out 8-6 winners.
“It was a very difficult victory. It was a nervous match because there was something on our minds as we were playing without our own cues which were lost on the plane,” said Babica, post-match.
“We borrowed cues from the Russians so it wasn’t easy to play with that on our minds and became hard to concentrate, but we had a bit of luck at the end of the match.
“We hope we will play our next match with our own cues so we will not be as nervous,” he added.

The first match of the afternoon was an exciting affair as the fancied Japanese duo of Naoyuki Oi and Toru Kuribayashi stole past European qualifiers Slovenia 8-7.
Slovenia, represented by Euro Tour veteran Matjaz Erculj and Matej Sulek, fought every step of the way but were defeated in a tense final rack where they both had visits.
Kuribayashi, who hit the big time last May, when he reached the World Pool Masters final as a qualifier, and the flamboyant Oi have plenty of chemistry but will need to improve if they want to beat Taiwan, their likely opponents in the next round.

Shaky England Fall Over the Line - France Oust Aussies in Shocker
FOLLOWING on from yesterday’s action-packed day of pool at Robinsons Place, Manila, the 2010 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool reconvened at midday Wednesday and it was England and France who made their way through to the next round in a couple of low-calibre matches.
England looked on the brink of defeat as they finally laboured to victory, 8-7 over minnows Qatar. Sporting World Champions, Daryl Peach and Karl Boyes never looked comfortable at any stage as they struggled to settle and find a rhythm.
The Qatari pair of Bashar Hussain and Mohammad Bin Ali were making their fifth appearance in the event and showed considerable nerves. They stuck with the English pair, though, stealing racks off their opponent’s mistakes.
There were plenty of errors throughout and the final rack was anyone’s before a decent shot from Boyes set up the match winning clearance.
"No disrespect to them but that would've been my worst defeat ever,” said Boyes afterwards.
“You set yourself goals and one of my goals coming here is to not just win the tournament but to play and beat the Philippines (Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante) in the semi-finals.
"It looked bad but we still played some good shots. They played well but obviously we did get very lucky. Daryl's not been feeling 100 per cent and when you know your partner is struggling, it puts you under pressure as you have to put everything on a 50 pence piece. But Daryl has made a one in 20 jump shot and I fluked a 9-ball so we were a bit lucky,” he added.
Peach said, "No match is easy and you're playing on TV so there is pressure. People think we should not miss but we aren't machines and everyone has an off day. That was an off day. We got lucky but we're still in it and a lot of the other teams will be peeved that we're still in it.
"We were very below par, probably about 20 per cent of what we would be usually but we're over the moon to get through. I've been feeling under the weather but we've been here before, we know what to do and how to kick on from this. We didn't under-estimate them. We knew both players and we know they're good potters. At the end of the day it's a race to eight, winner break, scotch doubles so you never settle down and it's hard to get a rhythm."
In the other match of the morning session, France and Australia played out a shocking affair with France finally prevailing 8-5. Their pair of Francois Cottance and Stephan Cohen had a match they would care to forget but it was still too much for the Australian pair of James Delahunty and Rick Emery.
To recount the details of the match would be superfluous, but needless to say, the French will need to improve considerably if they are to progress.
