Riley’s Wavertree Tour Stop 3 - 28th-29th August 2010

Roy Kimberley won his fourth BWPPA main event in a year this weekend at Rileys Wavertree, but he had to do it the hard way after he lost his opening match 7-5 against current wheelchair English 8-ball World Champion Gary Swift. Kimberley however beat Mark McNeil convincingly 7-3 to go into the quarters. Scotland’s Matt Duffy also had to come through the one-loss bracket after he lost 7-3 to Aslam Abubaker, the Glaswegian made his way into the last 8 brushing aside Adam Pearson 7-1. Elsewhere in the main event, the surprise package of the Darlington Cup Shaun Madin tasted revenge at the hands of Matthew Gleaves “the Mole” running out a comfortable 7-1 victor. Madin did however reach the quarter-finals in the main event, before being beaten 7-5 by Gary Swift, his performance in the last 2 events was enough to see him catapulted up 9 places in the BWPPA main event rankings to #5 following his appearance in the final at Darlington. Frankie Gillen also finds himself outside of the elite top 8, after he lost 7-4 to Adam Pearson and 7-1 against Shaun Madin.

Other quarter-final results saw Roy Kimberley beat Aslam Abubaker 7-5 in a repeat of the main event final at the first event of the year in Birmingham, Tony Southern losing out 7-4 to Matt Duffy and BWPPA Chairman Matthew Gleaves holding onto his #2 spot beating Karl Read 7-4.
I think it’s fair to say the semi-finals were fairly one sided, with “the Sandman” Roy Kimberley dominating proceedings against Gary Swift with a 7-2 scoreline, and Matt Duffy reaching his first main event final for 2 years beating Matthew Gleaves 7-3.
Kimberley did show why he has held onto the British #1 spot for so long with a dominant 7-2 victory over the Scot in the final. Whilst in the Challenge Cup Danny Luton picked up his second Challenge title of the season with a 5-2 win over Mark McNeil in the final.
