Darren Appleton (ENG) 8-4 Nick Van Den Berg (NED)

Darren Appleton, the reigning World 10 Ball Champion became the third ever Englishman to win the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters title following a fighting 8-4 win over Holland’s Nick van den Berg at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.

The 33 year-old, who converted to big table pool in recent years, following an outstanding career at English 8 Ball, beat Raj Hundal, Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen en route to the final.

As well as the title and magnificent trophy, Appleton takes a cheque for $20,000 while Van Den Berg earned half that amount.

"It's unbelievable to win the World Pool Masters," said Appleton. "It has been my goal to win a Matchroom event and to win this is like winning another world title.

"After the 10-ball victory I put a lot of expectation on myself and hopefully this will help me get in the World Cup of Pool and the Mosconi Cup. We all want to play in Matchroom tournaments and this hasn't done me any harm.”

"This gives me a lot more belief that I can go on and keep winning titles. My target has been to get in the Mosconi Cup and winning this puts me in the mix. It is every pool players dream to play in the Mosconi Cup.”

Mika Immonen (FIN) 8-4 Dennis Orcollo (PHI)
IN THE final match of the last eight, Mika Immonen was always too good against Dennis Orcollo, running out an 8-4 winner at the Riviera and now earns himself a match up with Darren Appleton for a spot in Sunday night’s final.

"I think I had the best of it on the break and felt I only made one unforced error when I jumped up on the three-ball and scratched - horrible shot,” said Immonen.

"But I played a solid match and he didn't have many chances. I wasn't nervous at all and felt comfortable.

Pontefract's Darren Appleton has a better day at the World Pool Masters in Las Vegas.

Darren Appleton (ENG) 8-3 Raj Hundal (IND)

The final match of the afternoon session saw reigning World 10 Ball Champion Darren Appleton defeat old rival Raj Hundal of India in a match that saw the Englishman trailing in the early stages before winning eight racks on the spin to take the victory.

Hundal made a great start as he raced into a 3-0 lead; Appleton misjudged a safety on the 2-ball which cost him the opener before Hundal produced two near faultless racks.

However, Appleton took advantage of a missed pot on the 1-ball and that lead to the Englishman winning his first rack. Seconds later it was 3-2 as Appleton came up with a golden break as the 9-ball fell into the side pocket.

Johnny Archer progresses to the next round at the World Pool Masters in Las Vegas.
All photographs used with permission courtesy of Matchroom Sport / JP Parmentier

Johnny Archer (USA) 8-2 Imran Majid (ENG)

A highly-determined Johnny Archer moved into the last eight with an assured performance as he brushed aside the challenge of England’s Imran Majid to win 8-2, much to the delight of the capacity crowd at the Riviera.

From a 2-all scoreline, the Englishman didn’t get much of a look in as Archer dominated with his powerful break and clinical finishing.

There was some potential needle in the encounter as the players had clashed controversially over accusations of Imran sharking Archer at the 2006 Mosconi Cup, but the American diffused the situation with his dominating play.

"That was a good performance and I was very happy with the way I played. I made some good shots and a couple of racks were pretty easy but there was consistency which has been lacking so maybe I'm on my way back,” said Archer.

"Any time Mosconi Cup members play each other there will be a little bit of extra spark. I don't have anything against Imran Majid but to beat anyone from the Mosconi Cup gives you an extra boost.

Don't let Cha's beauty fool you, she can be a deadly force.

Yu Ram Cha Takes on the Men at the World Pool Masters...

21 year old billiard sensation Yu Ram Cha of Korea has been invited as the sole woman entrant of the 2009 World Pool Masters. The event takes place at the Riviera Hotel and Casino this weekend May 8-10 and is produced by Matchroom Sport, a leading force in billiard promotions. The World Pool Masters has had a long history of famous champions such as Ralf Souquet, Thomas Engert, Raj Hundal, and defending champion Alex Pagulayan. Sixteen men are invited each year, with last year being the first time a woman was invited in Jasmin Ouschan of Austria. This year Yu Ram Cha was selected.

Cha has quickly rised to the forefront of the pool world's more notable players. Nicknamed "The Little Lightning" for her petite stature but powerful break, stroke and explosive game, her titles include 2006 Korea Pro Tour Champion, 2007 Super Billiards Expo Woman's Amateur Champion, 2007 World Junior 10-Ball Champion, and multiple regional pro/am event wins in US women's tours. In 2008 Cha went out to the USA to try to win qualifiers for the WPBA Women's Pro Tour and quickly made a statement coming out of nowhere to finish 3rd at the WPBA US Open including a first time ESPN TV match win over Karen Corr. That year she took down a multitude of top names such as Monica Webb, Jasmin Ouschan, Xiao Ting Pan, Kelly Fisher, Helena Thornfeldt, Jennifer Chen and many more. She started the year unranked and finished #18 and earned WPBA Most Improved Player as well as 2008 Billiard's Digest Breakthrough Player.

Visa problems force last minute switch...

MATCHROOM SPORT can announce that Canadian veteran Alain Martel has withdrawn from the 16 player starting line-up of the 2009 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters, following difficulties in obtaining the necessary visa.

He will be replaced by fellow Canadian 29 year-old Tyler Edey who will be playing in his second World Pool Masters.

Edey is the current No.2 ranked player in Canada and with a string of promising results behind him, he will be looking to make the breakthrough to the highest level.

“I’m delighted to get this opportunity and I’m really looking forward to the event and seeing everyone again,” he said.

Edey will face the daunting task of Dennis Orcollo in his first round match on Saturday evening in front of a packed crowd.

“They’re all tough players in this event so it doesn’t really matter who I play. This is an unexpected chance and I plan to make the most of it,” he added.

Two days at home in London before flying to Vegas

Raj Hundal has managed to fit in a nice little earner with a victory at the InterPool Open in Sweden before he shoots off to Las Vegas for Matchroom Sports production of the 2009 World Pool Masters.

The Londoner didn't have it easy though, as the final pitched him against local pool superstar Marcus Chamat, and the Swede matched Hundal all the way to the hill, before "The Hitman" put an end to his hopes, taking the 11-10 victory.

The semi-finals were no "walk in the park" either as Hundal had to dispatch none other than Dutch standout Niels Feijen, whilst at the same time Chamat faced no lesser player than Finland's Mika Immonen.

Higgins Goes Fourth After World Triumph!

John Higgins has regained a place among the top four of the official world rankings following his victory in the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.

The Wizard of Wishaw became only the fourth player to win a third World title at the Crucible by beating Shaun Murphy 18-9 in the final in Sheffield tonight.

Higgins, whose previous Crucible crowns came in 1998 and 2007, climbs one place to fourth in the official list for the 2009/10 season. "To win it three times here at the Crucible means everything to me," said the 33-year-old Scot. "To be up there with the great Champions who have won it three times is a proud moment. I think I've got more titles left in me. These will be my best years to win more tournaments."

Murphy missed out on his second World title and the Sale-based cueman remains at No 3. "All the great names have played and got beat in a World final, so now I know how they felt, and if it inspired them to go on and be better players, it will inspire me," said the 2005 Champion.

Archer is prepared for sharking this time...

With a long and highly decorated career going back to the late 1980’s, Georgia’s Johnny Archer can probably lay claim to being the most successful American pool player of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

World Championships, Mosconi Cups, the US Open, along with countless other tournaments in all four corners of the globe are all on the Scorpion’s roll call of honours and he dusts his cue down once again this week as he takes part in the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters at the Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas from 8-10 May.

It is a venue that holds many good memories for Archer; “Oh yeah, I won the World 9 Ball Championship (PBT version) at the Riv in 1993 and beat Efren Reyes in the finals. That's a good one, and I also won the BCA 9-Ball and beat Mika Immonen 7 to 0 in the semi finals.”
