Fond memories will be rekindled in Telford this weekend, as the 8th annual Paul Medati Trophy takes place at the Park Inn by Radisson hotel. Many players of cue sports across the country, not least those who play 9-ball, will share memories of Paul’s time as a player. His days as both a snooker professional, as well as being a 9-ball player in later life, were always spent with an infectious smile on his face and he was one of the friendliest and most cheerful players during his short time on the GB 9 Ball Tour. Paul played in the tour’s inaugural season back in 2008 before sadly losing his battle with lung cancer later that year. The competition has been held in his honour from 2009 to the present day, with the trophy being amongst the most coveted in the GB9 calendar. Previous winners of the competition read like a who’s who of some of the finest cuesport talent in the country. Karl Boyes, Mark Gray and Craig Osborne are all major forces in the sport in Great Britain, whilst Chris Melling is currently competing on the World Snooker main tour. Mick Hill, 2013 champion, is the reigning WEPF World Eightball champion and recently came within one frame of winning the Chinese 8-Ball world title. As previously announced current IPA World Champion Gareth Hibbott will be making his GB9 debut this weekend and of course many more of the finest amateur and professional players from across the continent will be eagerly hoping they can add their name to that roll of honour and take away the silverware from Telford.

At the Dynamic Billard European Championships in St. Johann i.Pg., teams Germany and Poland won the Gold Medals in the team competition.
In the men’s division, the final match turned out to be a thriller. Germany played Russia. Sebastian Staab won the 8-ball match over Maksim Dudanets quite comfortably with 8:4. That match was the first one over. When it was finished, the score in 9-ball between Ralf Souquet and Konstantin Stepanov was 4:5 in favor of Stepanov and the 10-ball match between Joshua Filler and Ruslan Chinakhov was 6:6. In both matches, the Russians had a high lead. Chinakhov was up 5:1 on Filler while Stepanov also lead 5:1 over Souquet. But the Germans fought back. At 7:7, Joshua Filler was at the table and he was running the rack. No problems were on the table. But suddenly he played a bad position for the 9-ball, positioning the 10-ball in between the cue ball and the 9-ball. What an unnecessary mistake in that situation. He went for a jump-shot but he missed it, leaving two tremendously tough shots for Chinakhov. The „Siberian Express“ went for both of them and made both shots under unbelievable pressure. That gave him the 8:7 victory over Filler and the 9-ball match had to be the decider. The score was 6:6 at that point in time between Souquet and Stepanov. Souquet went on the hill first with 8:6 but Stepanov pulled one back to make it 8:7. Then Ralf Souquet won the final rack and took the match which brought the first Gold Medal this week to Germany.

With a magnificent performance so far, Mieszko Fortunski (POL) ousted Mats Schjetne (NOR) 8:2 from the 10-ball discipline at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Hotel Alpina, Alpendorf, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria.
Big names have fallen today in the men’s division. Favorite players like #1 seeded player Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz are among the victims just like Nick van den Berg (NED), Niels Feijen (NED), Albin Ouschan (AUT), Marcus Chamat (SWE), Mario He (AUT), Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) … just to name a few. But Fortunski is one of the last four men standing in the men’s 10-ball. He defeated Mats Schjetne in the quarter-final match with 8:2, leaving not many chances for Schjetne to take. Fortunski seems to be on fire since his last Euro-Tour victory in March in Treviso and he is definitely counted in as favorite for the title now. In the semi-final which will be played tomorrow evening at 18:00 CET, Fortunski will meet Petri Makkonen (FIN) who smashed Mario He (AUT) 8:2 in his quarter-final match tonight. The other semi-final will be played between David Alcaide (ESP) and underdog Miguel Silva (POR).

Fred Dinsmore DINSMORE WINS THE FIRST EVENT OF THE 2016 BWPPA SEASON
The 2016 BWPPA season began on the 5th/6th March 2016 with the GNO Southern 9-ball Open held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sports Academy at Stoke Mandeville. The title sponsor of the event is our main tour sponsor the Gentleman’s Night Out charity, based in the West Midlands.
The tour got off to a great start with some excellent pool on show. Among the entries was Stuart Vincent, who was appearing at his first BWPPA event. Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore was keen to add to his 2 victories during the 2015 season, which helped him to the top of the ranking for a 2nd successive year.
Following his bye into round 2 as no.1 seed, Dinsmore started off with a 7-0 win over the debutant Vincent. Dinsmore then followed this up with a 7-2 win over great rival Roy Kimberley. This sent him into the semi-final, while Vincent showed great spirit in the losers bracket making a comeback, which pushed Matt Lester as hard as he could. We hope to see Stuart Vincent at many more BWPPA events in the future. He certainly has the talent to challenge the best on tour.
