Teams Germany and Poland win the Gold in the team competition

At the Dynamic Billard European Championships in St. Johann i.Pg., teams Germany and Poland won the Gold Medals in the team competition.

In the men’s division, the final match turned out to be a thriller. Germany played Russia. Sebastian Staab won the 8-ball match over Maksim Dudanets quite comfortably with 8:4. That match was the first one over. When it was finished, the score in 9-ball between Ralf Souquet and Konstantin Stepanov was 4:5 in favor of Stepanov and the 10-ball match between Joshua Filler and Ruslan Chinakhov was 6:6. In both matches, the Russians had a high lead. Chinakhov was up 5:1 on Filler while Stepanov also lead 5:1 over Souquet. But the Germans fought back. At 7:7, Joshua Filler was at the table and he was running the rack. No problems were on the table. But suddenly he played a bad position for the 9-ball, positioning the 10-ball in between the cue ball and the 9-ball. What an unnecessary mistake in that situation. He went for a jump-shot but he missed it, leaving two tremendously tough shots for Chinakhov. The „Siberian Express“ went for both of them and made both shots under unbelievable pressure. That gave him the 8:7 victory over Filler and the 9-ball match had to be the decider. The score was 6:6 at that point in time between Souquet and Stepanov. Souquet went on the hill first with 8:6 but Stepanov pulled one back to make it 8:7. Then Ralf Souquet won the final rack and took the match which brought the first Gold Medal this week to Germany.

Team Germany reached the final match by ousting team Sweden 2:0 in the semi-final. Team Russia defeated team Finland in the semi-final.

In the women’s division, team Poland reached out for Gold today. They defeated team Russia in the final match. Oliwia Czuprynska was able to get the first point into the Polish account with a 7:2 victory over Nataliya Seroshtan. But Anna Mazhirina was able to tie the match, defeating Katarzyna Wesolowska 6:2 in 8-ball. A shootout had to decide the final match. The first shots were all missed by the players. It was Czuprynska who pocketed the first shot and put the Russians under pressure. But the Russians could not stand the heat. They missed too many shots and in consequence, team Poland won the shootout and took the title with 2:1 over Russia. On third place in the women's competition were teams Norway and Germany.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time with matches in the 8-ball individuals.

Furberg shows nerves of steel

Louise Furberg (SWE) has won her match over Eylul Kibaroglu (TUR) with 6:5 and proceeded to the loser’s round 2.

It was a tough day for Furberg today already. In her first match of the day, she faced Kristina Tkach (RUS) and quickly see that Tkach was advancing in the match while she could not go against her. Fur berg was already trailing 3:5 when she kind of got momentum and was able to turn the tide for a while and tie the match at 5:5. Being both on the hill, Tkach had the better ending and won with 6:5. Then Furberg had to go against Kibaroglu. The story of that match was completely the opposite. Here Furberg was the one leading 5:3 when she had to watch Kibaroglu pulling back rack after rack. Suddenly, Furberg found herself again in a hill-hill match. This time, she really wanted the victory and stay alive in the women’s 8-ball individuals. She broke the balls and had an open but not an easy table in front of her. But she mastered it quite impressively and ran out the rack in order to win the match with 6:5 this time. Furberg will be up next against Bernadett Tuboly-Toth (HUN). Furberg’s teammate, defending Champion Caroline Roos (SWE) is also on th loser’s side. She lost her first match to Melanie Suessenguth (GER) 4:6. Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER) defeated Anna Mazhirina (RUS) with 6:4.

In the men’s 8-ball individuals, Balasz Miko (HUN) won 8:5 against Albin Ouschan (AUT) in the first winners round. After winning the straight pool Gold Medal and title this week, Ouschan is searching for his top level game. In the same round, Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) smashed Fabio Petroni (ITA) 8:2. Both players are equally good but Chinakhov got momentum first today and then it is almost impossible to stop „The Siberian Express“. Joshua Filler (GER) made short work of Andreas Madsen (DEN) and finished him 8:1 after 33 minutes only!

In the wheelchair division of the 8-ball individuals, defending Champion Fred Dinsmore (IRL) got the better of all-time rival Jouni Tahti (FIN) and won the first winner’s round match 5:4. The all-British clash was also won 5:4 by Daniel Lee over Tony Southern. Kurt Deklerck (BEL) had smooth sailing in his first match defeating Danijel Savic (AUT) 5:0.

Today at 18:00, the semifinals in the team competition will be played. The finals are scheduled for 20:00 CET.

Souquet over Cohen in 8-ball

In the men’s 8-ball competition at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in St. Johann i.Pg., Austria, Ralf Souquet (GER) defeated Stephan Cohen (nothing) with 8:5.

It was a duel of two grand masters. Both players are around in the pool circuit for quite some time now and they know each other ver well. Cohen came to the winner’s qualification round by winning 8:7 only over Petr Urban (CZE). Ralf Souquet had the same result in his favor against Marsel Safiullin (RUS). So both players had a hill-hill thriller stuck in their bones from the previous round. They played very carefully and slow in order to not make any mistake that the opponent might have benefitted from. After eight racks, the score was tied at 4:4. So far, none of the two players was able to gain an advantage of more than one rack over the other. But then, Souquet managed to get a 6:4 lead over Cohen. That was exactly what he needed. Cohen could not even that mistake out anymore and being 7:5 up, Souquet won another rack and ended the match in his favor with 8:5. Cohen will play the loser’s qualification round against the winner of Onuc Altur and Osman Sanlisoy (both TNC). Other interesting results in the men’s 8-ball competition today include defending Champion Niels Feijen (NED) winning 8:3 against his teammate Marc Bijsterbosch (NED). A surprise happened in the match between Sergiu Voicu (ROM) and Sebastian Ludwig (GER). Voicu took the match with 8:7 from the German. Also not expected was Christian Sparrenloev-Fischer’s (SWE) victory with 8:5 over Juan Carlos Exposito (ESP). Petri Makkonen (FIN) defeated Mario He (AUT) 8:6 in the same round.

In the women’s 8-ball competition, a huge surprised occurred when Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) lost her opening match against Amalia Matas (ESP) with 3:6. The two-time Gold Medallist from this week now needs to take the longest way possible if she wants to conquer this title as well. Defending Champion in 8-ball is Caroline Roos (SWE). She will play her first match tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET against Melanie Suessenguth (GER). More remarkable results from today include Ana Gradisnik (SLO) winning 6:4 over Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL). Sandra Baumgartner (AUT) defeated Christine Feldmann (SUI) by a whisker with 6:5. Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) handed a doughnut to Johanna Vartianen (FIN) and crushed her 6:0.

In the wheelchair division, only three matches were played today. Jouni Tahti (FIN) defeated David Himpe (BEL) clearly with 5:1. Daniel Lee (GBR) got the better of Kim-Ronny Nygaard (NOR) with 5:4 and Danijel Savic (AUT) won 5:3 over David Slacek (SLO).

The quarter-finals in the men’s team came up with the following results:
Sweden vs Slovakia 2:0
Germany vs Portugal 2:0
Spain vs Finland 2:1
Russia vs Austria 2:1

The loser’s qualification matches in the women’s teams ended as follows:
Germany vs Belgium 2:1
Poland vs Austria 2:1

The Dynamic Billard European Championships will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time with matches in the 8-ball individuals. The teams semifinals will commence at 18:00 with the finals to follow straight after.

Disaster for Dutch and Polish teams

The Gold and Silver Medallists in the men’s division from last year’s European Championships in Vale do Lobo, Portugal, Poland and The Netherlands are already eliminated at this year’s Dynamic Billard European Championships in St. Johann i.Pg., Austria. The Netherlands lost their women’s team as well.

The Polish and Dutch teams belong to the highly favored candidates for the title in the men’s division over the last years. This year, things did not go their way at all. The Dutch team suffered a defeat against strong team Russia in the first winner’s round. Only Niels Feijen was able to win the 8-ball with 8:4 over Maksim Dudanets. Macro Teutscher lost 3:8 to Ruslan Chinakhov in 10-ball while Nick van den Berg lost 8:9 to Konstantin Stepanov after he was already 7:3 up in that match. That loss took the Dutch team to the loser’s side where they barely stayed alive against outsider Hungary with 2:1. Ivo Aarts and again Niels Feijen took their matches while Nick van den Berg again proved to be the weak link in the team. Strangely enough, van den Berg is the only Dutch medal winner so far this week but in the team competition he seemed to struggle to find his game. The next round, the Dutch met team Slovakia. The Netherlands were highly favored in that encounter. But again, Feijen was the only one able to win his match with 9:1 in 9-ball over Jaroslav Polach. Marc Bijsterbosch lost the 10-ball with 5:8 to Balazs Koeles and van den Berg succumbed with 4:8 in 8-ball against Jakub Koniar. That defeat was completely unexpected and the Dutch team surely had higher expectations for themselves.

Just like The Netherlands, team Poland has exited the draw in the men’s competition. The defending Champions won their first match 2:0 over Greece but then fell with 1:2 to team Sweden. On the loser’s side, the Polish were defeated 2:1 by team Austria. The quarterfinals will be played tonight between the following teams:

Sweden vs Slovakia
Germany vs Portugal
Spain vs Finland
Russia vs Austria

In the women’s division, the Russian ladies have done their homework. The defending Champions defeated Italy 2:0 and Belgium 2:1 after a shootout. These victories booked them a seat in the semifinals. The other team already there is team Norway. They remained the upper hand over Spain 2:0 and Austria 2:1, also after a shootout. Teams The Netherlands and Spain are already eliminated in the women’s competition. The Dutch lost 1:2 to Poland while Spain lost 1:2 to Germany. The loser’s qualification round is played tonight together with the men’s quarterfinals. There, the following teams will joust:

Germany vs Belgium
Poland vs Austria

Today the tournament switched to 8-ball individuals at 13:00 CET. The quarterfinals in the teams will be played at 20:00.

Gold Medals for Ouschan, Tahti and Alcaide

The 10-ball competition at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in St. Johann i.Pg., Austria, have been decided. The Gold Medals and titles were taken by Jasmin Ouschan (AUT), Jouni Tahti (FIN) and David Alcaide (ESP).

The women’s division showed Jasmin Ouschan winning her second title this week. After taking the crown in straight pool, today she won the 10-ball title as well with a never endangered 6:2 victory over Line Kjoersvik (NOR). The final match was more or less a one woman show. It must be stated though that Kjoersvik also seemed to be a bit unfortunate at times. She could not really benefit from her breakshot until Ouschan was already 4:0 up. That was simply too much to comeback for. „I played quite well in 10-ball“ stated Ouschan after the match, „though I do struggle with my shoulder. The tournament seems to be going my way“ added Ouschan with a smile. Ouschan ousted Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) 6:3 in the semifinal while Kjoersvik defeated Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) with 6:2.

In the wheelchair division, Jouni Tahti managed to defend his title from last year. Though he had to take the detour over the loser’s side, he came back strong and clearly defeated Kurt Deklerck (BEL) with 6:2 in the final match. That eliminated Daniel Lee (GBR) in the semis while Deklerck ended David Himpe’s (BEL) hopes for an appearance in the final match.

In the men’s division, the final match was a heartbreaker packed with drama and action. David Alcaide was trailing 2:4 after six racks to his strong opponent Petri Makkonen (FIN). Then he overtook Makkonen with 6:4 and 7:5. Both players seemed to be nervous and committed unusual mistakes during the match. The pressure was definitely on. As in every good drama, it came to a hill-hill situation at 7:7. There Alcaide broke the balls and had a layout where the 6-ball was blocked by the 10-ball. He pocketed all balls until the 6-ball was on and then came up with a magnificent safety shot. But Makkonen hit that shot over two rails and left a tough bank shot for Alcaide. The Spaniard went for it, made it and ran the rack to win the match and the title with 8:7. „We both were pretty nervous“ admitted Alcaide after the match, „that’s why we made these mistakes. In the last rack, I thought my safety was perfect but Petri made a real good shot. He forced me to go for the bank shot. It was a do or die situation for me. I’m glad I won this title,“ added Alcaide.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time with matches in the team division. At 13:00 CET, the 8-ball discipline will commence.

Team competition started at Dynamic Billard European Championships

22 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams have announced for this year’s Dynamic Billard European Championships team competition. Today, action has started in both divisions at 09:00 CET.

The teams in the men’s division consist of three players who play 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball. As soon as one team has won two matches, the team match is over. Defending Champions are team Poland. They have solved their first task today pretty unspectacular. They defeated team Greece 2:0 with Tomasz Kaplan winning the 8-ball match 8:1 over Theodore Bitsaxakis and Mariusz Skoneczny overpowering Manolis Papadodimitrakis in 9-ball 9:6. The Polish team will face team Sweden in the next round tomorrow at 09:00 CET. The Swedes have defeated team Norway with 2:1. Jim Chawki was successful in 8-ball over Steffen Wolff with 8:4. „Napoleon“ Marcus Chamat put another point into the Swedish account with his 9-ball victory 9:7 over Kristoffer Mindreboe. The only Norwegian point was taken by Mats Schjetne in 8-ball who defeated Andreas Gerwen 8:5.

One of the favored teams here is team Spain. They crushed team Austria with 2:0 and will now meet their neighbors from Portugal in the next round. Close action could be witnessed in the match between teams Russia and The Netherlands. Russian Chinakhov took the first point for the Russians in winning the 10-ball 8:3 over Marco Teutscher. Niels „The Terminator“ Feijen was able to equalize that by defeating Maksim Dudanets in 8-ball 8:4. The decision had to come from the 9-ball match. Nick van den Berg was up 7:3 in a race to 9. But his opponent Konstantin Stepanov never gave in and pulled back rack after rack from van den Berg. it came to a hill-hill situation at 8:8. There, Stepanov demonstrated high class pool as well as nerves of steel. He ran a tough rack and took the match 9:8 from van den Berg. With that point, Russia defeated The Netherlands with 2:1. The Dutch will meet Croatia in the next round who won 2:1 over team Slovakia. The fourth winner’s qualification match will be played between team Germany (2:0 over Slovenia) and team France (2:1 over Finland).

In the women’s division, the teams consist of two players who play 8-ball and 9-ball. In case of a 1:1 tie, a shootout is played. The cue ball will be put on the head spot and the object ball on the foot spot. The teams have to shoot at this shot and whoever wins that shootout wins the match. The reigning Champions are team Russia. They had a walk-over in the first round and then smashed team Italy 2:0 to get to the winner’s qualification round. There they will meet team Belgium consisting of the Khodjaeva sisters. They won both of their matches through the shootout. 2:1 over Sweden and the 2:1 over Poland. The other winner’s qualification match will be played between team Austria (2:0 over team Germany) and team Norway (2:0 over team Spain). The winner’s qualification round in the women team’s division is tomorrow at 11:00 CET.

Today will feature more team action until 18:00. Then, the semifinals in 10-ball will be played with the finals to be scheduled for 20:00.

The Championships are played on 24 tables which will all be streamed LIVE throughout the whole event.
