Ruijsink is back to steer Europeans

UNDEFEATED EUROPEAN captain Johan Ruijsink returns to the fray for one last time as he assumes captaincy duties for Team Europe when the 20th annual Mosconi Cup takes place at the Mirage, Las Vegas from 2nd to 5th December.

The 47 year-old Dutchman will be making his sixth appearance at the annual Europe v USA team event and so far a team in his charge has yet to be beaten. Ruijsink first took charge in 2006 when he stopped the rot with a draw in Rotterdam following three successive American victories.

He followed that up with an epic, if heated, victory on American soil in 2007; the first by a European team in the US. The Dutchman then skipped the next two as Alex Lely took charge, but returned in 2010 at the York Hall as he masterminded the first of a run of three consecutive victories.

Im particularly looking forward to this one as it is the 20th anniversary of the Mosconi Cup, it is in the US and next to that it will be my last captaincy, so three very good reasons to be highly motivated to win this one, said Ruijsink.

UK's Darren Appleton has shattered all previous high runs in any major 14.1 event in the history of the sport

Darren Appleton of the United Kingdom has done something no player has done in the 102 years of pocket billiards championships. Appleton on his first opening offensive inning ran a perfect 200 point game. This put him in the record books with a 200 to 1 score over Filipino world champ Francisco Bustamante. Dragon Promotions and Dr. Michael Fedak have brought another globally star studded field at this year's 73rd Olhausen World Tournament hosted by Steinway Billiards in New York on August 19th-24th,2013. Live stream broadcast will be on www.insidepool.tv

Bustamante made his first offensive attempt on a long distance ball but was then stuck with no easy shot next. He went for a tough combo and missed leaving the rack open for Appleton. Francisco would never leave his seat again. For the next 1 hour and 40 minutes Appleton ran rack after rack in precision. Eventually he broke the World Tournament record of 73 events with a 175 which was previously held by Thorsten Hohmann. And then he broke the all time record at any major at 183 which was set at a old US Open 14.1 by Joe Procita. As the audience cheered and the pressure mounted ball by ball, the steely nerved Appleton never slowed down. He eventually hit the final breakshot and made 2 more balls to make a perfect 2 century run and win the match at 200 points which he left the table unfinished without a miss.

"I've been telling my friends for days now that after watching Appleton play many matches, he really plays the right way. He plays great patterns and comes with the tough shots when he has to as well", commented John Schmidt, 2012 World Tournament 14.1 Champion.

Appleton was all smiles when he broke record after record.

"I really didn't know what the record was until they announced it during the run. I was just wanting to get to 170. But I was pretty happy when I heard I broke the World Tournament record. It feels really good", said Appleton.

When asked when did he feel he could get the 200 balls Darren answered,"When I ran 80 I felt that I could do it because I felt really good the way I was hitting the balls." Appleton actually ran a 150 unfinished in practice before the match today in warm-ups.

When asked what has motivated him so much during the run he answered," My fiance Angie reminded me we have a big wedding bill to pay soon!" he laughs.

"I would have continued my run if we had 2-3 hours before the finals." Appleton left his run unfinished and Bustamante humorously swiped all the balls after his run in any case.

EVENT REPORT: 2013 GB9 SOUTHERN MASTERS

GB9′s first event ever event in Essex has reached its conclusion with Daryl Peach beating Karl Boyes to win his first GB9 event in over 12 months at the 2013 Southern Masters at London Stansted airport.

This event was the first of its kind in GB9′s six year history, and the somewhat curious location ensured a truly cosmopolitan feel to a national tournament. Participants from Italy, Denmark and Spain all flew over to Great Britain to contest perhaps this seasons most anticipated competition yet. With places in a World Pool Masters qualifier at the conclusion of the event up for grabs, this was sure to be a hotly contested event and the immense quality of pool certainly didnt disappoint. Peach who was down in tenth position in the rankings for the World Pool Masters qualifying spot prior to the start of play, had already done his maths and worked out that he needed nothing short of winning the main event in order to be in the running, a fact which brought immense pressure on each of his matches and that makes his win quite incredible.

Peach began his route to the final with a smooth 9-5 win against Spains Albert Casellas which put him through to a winners qualifying stage match with another Spaniard in the form of Juan Carlos Exposito. He ensured that Spain suffered a second consecutive defeat as a 9-4 win comfortably saw the 2007 World Champion into the last 32. Here he was to meet his first Brit in the form of Tom Staveley. Any complacency was left well and truly at the door as he hammered his compatriot 9-0 to advance to a last 16 match up with Imran Majid. A very high quality encounter followed with four break and runs helping Peach to a 9-7 win and a quarter final with another international figure in the form of Denmarks Jan Keller. His third international opponent suffered the same fate as his first 9-5 was the score in favour of Peach, and a semi-final with Dave Nelson awaited him. Special mention must go to Nelson at this point for a quite amazing run of his own to the semi-final. After qualifying for the single knockout last 32 with a comfortable 9-2 win over Martyn Royce, no less than THREE hill-hill encounters followed against Courtney Symons, Tommy Donlon and Kevin Simpson, all of which he managed to win 9 racks to 8 to meet Peach in the semi. His luck was to run out, however, and Peach saw off his Wakefield opponent 9-5 and secure a place in the final.

Parker On A High as he takes the double at Wycombe

Mark completes the double again by winning both sides of the draw this weekend in Total9balls The Switch 2 held at High Wycombe Hurricane Room. 14 players took part in this event which used both 9 ball and 10 ball disciplines. Mark Parker's day began with a tricky match against James Buck. James is a new player to 9 ball after making the switch from snooker, James won his first competitive T9B event in Bristol a couple of weeks ago, so he would have been hoping for more of the same again. Parker would appear to be his bogey player though as Mark knocked Buck out of one half of the draw in Bristol and the same happened again today in the 9 ball side of the draw with Mark The Essex Panther Parker winning by a 7v2 score line. Parker's next two matches would be against the same opponent Ken Ng. The only differences between the two matches were, one match was 9 ball, the other was 10 ball and a different table was used. The results however were the same as Mark overcame Ken 7v4 twice. I had a chat with Ken after the match and he praised the way Mark played but was disappointed about his own performance saying, I missed a few crucial balls which cost me important racks however it's clear that Ken is improving as a player and Im sure it wont be long until his results improve. Ken is keen to play in as many T9B events as he can as he knows tournament play is the best way to improve his game.

Full Player List Announced

WITH THE eighth running of the annual World Cup of Pool now a month away, the full line-up of players competing in the $250,000 event can be revealed. 32 pairs of players representing 31 countries will be coming to London from the 17th 22nd September as the fabled pool and boxing venue of the York Hall plays host to one of the biggest events on the pool calendar.

15 of the worlds top 20 ranked players will be in attendance in what arguably is the events strongest line up yet. Among favourites for the title will be two-time World Cup winners China represented by Li Hewen and Liu Haitao and the highly dangerous Filipino pairing of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza.

Other notable duos from the Far East include the Chinese Taipei representatives, Ko Pin-yi and Chang Jung-lin, and Japans Naoyuki Oi and Lo Li-wen.

Mosconi Cup legend Johnny Archer will be partnered by Shane Van Boening as the USA look to repeat the feat of Shane and Rodney Morris in Rotterdam in 2008 by winning the trophy for the second time.

English hopes come in the shape of World No.1 Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes, as well as Daryl Peach and Chris Melling. Both will be fancied to make a big impact in London.

Nick van den Berg and Niels Feijen will be carrying orange hopes on their shoulders, while veteran Ralf Souquet will be partnered by young gun Dominic Jentsch as Germany attempt to win for the second time in three years.

Finally, can the Finnish pair of Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen stage a repeat of their brilliant run to the title in Manila last year?

Matchroom Sport chairman Barry Hearn said, Looking at the teams for this years event, I reckon that at least half of them are in with a shout if the balls roll their way.

However, youd have to look at the track record of China, the sheer class of the Filipinos, the pedigree of the United States and of course the two high-quality English teams.

As weve seen in the past though, there are always unfancied sides that emerge from the pack and make serious challenges for the title. Either way, the World Cup of Pool will be a feast for cue sports fans and with the York Hall playing host, this one should be the best yet!

Each session will consist of three matches and all tickets can be obtained from Matchroom Sports trusted ticketing partner

Mateusz Sniegocki (POL)

An all Polish clash in the final

In an exciting thriller, Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) overpowered Tomasz Kaplan (POL) with 8:6.

Both Polish players managed to win their semi-finals and made the final of the Dynamic Billard Bosnia & Hercegovina Open an all Polish affair. Kaplan defeated Stephan Cohen (nothing) by the skin of his teeth with 8:7. Cohen could have won the semi-final but he missed a 6-ball at 7:7. Sniegocki got the better of Daryl Peach (GBR) with 8:5 in the other semi-final. All spotlights were now on the two Polish players who would fight it out on the final table. Sniegocki got the far better start. He seemed to be much fitter than Kaplan who seemed to be a bit tired. After five racks the scoreboard showed a 4:1 lead for Sniegocki. Though Kaplan had a longer break between his semi-final and the final match, Sniegocki seemed to be more "in the zone". One of Kaplan's problems was his break shot. He somehow could not make a ball on the break anymore. Whenever he left a possible situation for Sniegocki, he got punished by Sniegocki either running out or allowing him with a pretty good safety position to the table. But Kaplan found his way back into the match. He took a time-out and refocussed. Suddenly, the distance between the two was shrunk to one rack only. Sniegocki was still leading 6:5 but he could feel Kaplan fighting his way back into the match. And when the pressure increased, Sniegocki also made mistakes. In the 12th rack, he tried to play a safety with the 1-ball but accidentally pocketed the 6-ball when doing so. The position of the balls was bad and according to the rules, Kaplan had the choice to either accepting the table or giving the shot back to Sniegocki. Kaplan put Sniegocki back to the table and forced another error onto him. Sniegocki committed the error and Kaplan had the chance to tie the match at 6:6. But instead of leveling the match, Kaplan missed an easy 5-ball and left it hanging over the pocket for Sniegocki. What a drama after that terrific comeback! That serious lapse brought Sniegocki on the hill with 7:5 and his own break shot coming up. As if there has not yet been enough drama between the two friends, Sniegocki scratched on his break shot and Kaplan came back to the table with ball in hand. He cleared the table to turn the score to 6:7. The tension could not have been higher at that point in time. The audience was captured by the high class performance of these two players. In the next rack, Kaplan broke and ended up dry with no ball being pocketed. All balls were nicely spread and Sniegocki had an easy shot at the 1-ball. That was the end for Kaplan. Sniegocki ran all balls and claimed his first Euro-Tour title, winning the final match with 8:6.

Unstoppable Daryl Peach wins... EVERYTHING!!!

It's GB 9 Ball Tour time again - and this time it's the most Southern of the tour events - the nearest tour stop to London of the whole season. Players from across the continent will be flying into Great Britain for the first event of its kind as the 2013 GB9 Southern Masters takes place at the stunning Radisson Blu Hotel at Stansted Airport.

It appears that nothing was going to stop Daryl Peach today, as he took the GB9 Main Event final and the GB9 World Pool Masters Qualifier with very one-sided results - both over the very capable Karl Boyes.

A full official report will appear here later in the week, but in the meantime, please enjoy these bonus photos, and we'll be uploading some videos as soon as possible too.

CHINA'S HAN YU ROMPS TO THE 2013 WOMEN'S WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 9-1 WIN OVER CHINESE-TAIPEI'S LIN YUAN CHUN
BY TED LERNER
WPA PRESS OFFICER

Its true that hard work and perseverance do pay off.

Han Yu, who joined Chinas national billiard team five years ago when she was just 16 years old, finally fulfilled the dream that she and her coaches knew would someday come. And what a way to do it. In front of several hundred people watching inside the Richgate Shopping Center in Shenyang, and an estimated audience of nearly 100 million people watching on Chinas state television, Han completely outclassed Taiwans Lin Yuan Chun, 9-1, and won the 2013 WPA Womens World 9-ball Championship.

Hans victory means that Chinese players have won four out of the last five Womens World 9-ball Championships. The win also cemented the fact that, but for a few exceptions, the epicentre of womens 9-ball pool is well ensconced in China.

For the last few years, the talented Han has noticeably taken a bit of a back seat to the more high profile players on Chinas national team, such as Liu Shasha, Fu Xiaofang, and Chen Siming. But that all ended today with a scorching performance against Lin. Han now sits atop the pool world. And with her talent and noticeable confidence, she can only be expected to achieve even more.

Interestingly Han very nearly didnt even qualify for the knockout round of 32. She had to win a 9-8 squeaker just to get a spot in the round of 32. Once through, however, she was barely challenged, as she displayed a panache and bravery that couldnt be touched.

9-Ball Champions: Susanne Wessel and Tom Storm

Championship ended with 9-ball finals

The Dynamic Billard EPBF European Championships for Seniors and Ladies have come to and end. The last finals which were played in 9-ball brought titles for Susanne Wessel (GER) and Tom Storm (SWE).

Tom Storm defeated Johny Vanrijkel (BE) in the senior's final with 9:3. Storm was expected for a title earlier and it was his turn. Vanrijkel has played a solid and great tournament but in this final, he missed too many shots and made Storm's life rather easy. The 9:3 victory for Storm was completely deserved.

In the ladies' final, Susanne Wessel clearly eliminated Ann-Sofie Lfgren (SWE) with 6:1. Wessel took her second title this week while Lfgren collected her third medal at these Championships, two Silver and one Bronze.
