Parker On A High as he takes the double at Wycombe

Mark completes the double again by winning both sides of the draw this weekend in Total9ball’s The Switch 2 held at High Wycombe Hurricane Room. 14 players took part in this event which used both 9 ball and 10 ball disciplines. Mark Parker's day began with a tricky match against James Buck. James is a new player to 9 ball after making the switch from snooker, James won his first competitive T9B event in Bristol a couple of weeks ago, so he would have been hoping for more of the same again. Parker would appear to be his bogey player though as Mark knocked Buck out of one half of the draw in Bristol and the same happened again today in the 9 ball side of the draw with Mark ‘The Essex Panther’ Parker winning by a 7v2 score line. Parker's next two matches would be against the same opponent… Ken Ng. The only differences between the two matches were, one match was 9 ball, the other was 10 ball and a different table was used. The results however were the same as Mark overcame Ken 7v4 twice. I had a chat with Ken after the match and he praised the way Mark played but was disappointed about his own performance saying, ‘I missed a few crucial balls which cost me important racks’ however it's clear that Ken is improving as a player and I’m sure it won’t be long until his results improve. Ken is keen to play in as many T9B events as he can as he knows tournament play is the best way to improve his game.

Other results from round one included a 7v3 win for Ben Moore over Rob Sidaway, great to see Moore back playing again. Mark Stephenson and Barry French got the better of Bristol’s Sean Dracup 7v4 and 7v6 respectively. Tom Staveley looked to have held his great form from the T9B Amateur Series Grand Finals as he advanced past Mark Stephenson 7v5 and Rob Sidaway 7v3. Dave Evans put in a solid performance to defeat Phil Wildman 7v4 in the 10ball section.

Round two was soon upon us and matches began, Mark Parker continued his winning streak over Tom Staveley winning this time by a 7v5 result. Staveley did however maintain one life in this event by the skin of his teeth after Dave Evans fought back to hill-hill, Tom went on to take the deciding rack. Phil Wildman looked comfortable with a 5v2 lead against Ben Moore but Ben battled back to 5v5 before Phil broke dished for a 6v5 lead and converted the next with a few nice shots to book his place in the Quarter Finals of the 9ball. Barry French was cruising as he led Terry Keaney 5v0, Terry however didn’t give up hope and nearly completed a great comeback only to be denied by French at the final hurdle, Barry French 7 Terry Keeney 6. Barry put in another good performance to book his place in two Quarter Final matches eliminating Terry Challenger 7v5.

So the eight Quarter Final positions were owned by 6 players with Barry French and Mark Parker still remaining undefeated at this stage. Mark Parker gained revenue on T9B founder Phil Wildman and reversed the result from when Phil beat Mark in Bristol, Mark a 7v3 winner. James Buck must be sick of the sight of Mark Parker as they met for the second time in this event, Mark trailed for most of the match but came good at the end 7v5, this result left Mark just 2 wins away from winning the Jackpot for a second time. Joining Mark in the 9ball Final would be Tom Staveley as Tom played some flawless pool to beat Barry French 7v1. Mark now just needed an opponent in the 10ball Final, would Barry French get it right in the 10ball side of the draw or would Dave Evans continue his winning ways? This match was close from start to finish again proving the T9B handicap system is top notch, a dreaded hill-hill decider was needed to split these players for a place in the 10ball final, Barry kept his nerve and forwarded his name into the 10ball final.

Both Barry French and Tom Staveley were now gunning for just one player… Mark Parker, who was aiming to become the first player to win the jackpot twice. A coin flip decided Tom would be up first to challenge Parker. Mark made few mistakes and made the most of his chances running out a 7v3 winner. One down one more to go as Parker again switched to the 10ball discipline and Barry French was the only player who could stop Parker collecting the Winner's and Runner's up prize money. Barry played some quality shots in the opening few racks and looked like perhaps he could have Mark's number but a couple of key misses meant instead of Barry leading 5v2 he trailled 3v5, this gave Mark the confidence to push on to a 7v3 victory and another jackpot win for Mark Parker. Mark is currently playing the best pool of his life, amazing what confidence can do. Just a few months ago Parker's results weren’t great and he was borderline of a handicap decrease to +1, since then he has become T9B’s most consistent player winning the jackpot at his home venue Basildon Rileys, reaching the Final of the T9B Amateur Series Grand Final, a Semi Final of the National Series event held in Bristol and now another amazing double win at High Wycombe. It goes to show the massive improvement in his game and he is now a player everyone wants to avoid in the draw.

The venue in High Wycombe really is a fantastic place for T9B to hold events, all tables play nicely and the club is really modern after its latest refurbishment we recommend more players join us for future events held here.

Thanks go to High Wycombe Hurricane Room for providing us with quality facilities for this event, to Nicole Hansen for running another good event and to all the players who supported this event.

The next T9B event coming your way is The Masters held at St Albans Hurricane Room on Saturday 31st August, this will be a single elimination event with a plate comp for unlucky losers with prize money added. Match races will be extended and each match will have an interval at the mid-way stage, so this event should be very interesting to see how much difference that break makes to the matches. The thread is available on www.pro9.co.uk so make sure you get your entries in asap to be a part of this unique event.
