 | World Tournament of 14.1 Day 1: Martin vs Sigel Tomorrow |
The 71st World Tournament Hyatt Regency Two Albany Street New Brunswick New Jersey USA www.DragonPromotions.com www.Worldstraightpool.com
28 August - 2 September 2011
Charlie Williams beats Oliver Ortmann again and makes the quarter finals of the World Tournament for the third year in a row. Photography courtesy of Charles Eames An American Will Make the Finals: Ortmann Ousted by Williams
The USA will make the finals of the World Tournament of 14.1. Guaranteed. For the first time in over twenty years, an American will have a shot at the title that has been dominated by Europeans in modern times. And on the other side of the coin, a foreign player will also be guaranteed in the finals. Philippines, Germany, and the USA. Johnny Archer came back on Mika Immonen to keep the Finn at a 9th place finish. Archer won the match 200-156. Steve Lipsky earlier defeated former World 14.1 winner Stephan Cohen of France and then defeated fellow New Yorker Tony Robles 200-110. The big story of the day was the elimination of defending World Champion Oliver Ortmann. Ortmann has been the most decorated 14.1 player in the new millenium and the favorite to win this year. He eliminated Japanese champ Kunihiko Takahashi with a 120 ball run. But against Williams he could not get any runs going. Williams didn't play spectacular, but played steady. In the end, Williams capitalized on Ortmann's final mistake and won 200-151. Williams also handed Ortmann his only loss last year in the double elimination stage, but Ortmann still won the event. "I had mixed emotions before the match. The promoter part of me wants Oliver to advance because the fans want to watch him. Including me!" explained Williams. "But I'm also a professional and have to do my very best." Max Eberle eliminated Ray Martin in a one sided affair. But Martin got a round of applause as fans said goodbye to their former World Champion in perhaps his final 14.1 event.

Mark Selby clinched his second title of the season as he defeated Mark Davis 4-0 in the final of the Paul Hunter Classic.
The event, the fourth of the Players Tour Championship series, was staged in front of capacity crowds at the Stadthalle Furth in Germany.
More than 240 professionals and amateurs competed and Selby was in thrilling form as he whitewashed Sam Harvey, Rory McLeod, Craig Steadman and Andrew Higginson in his opening four rounds.
He finally lost a frame in his 4-1 quarter-final victory over Stephen Lee but his toughest task came against Ronnie O’Sullivan in the semi-finals when he recovered from 3-1 behind to win 4-3.
In the final Selby, the current world number three, made breaks of 47, 73, 99 and 60 as he stormed to his second win in two months, after winning the invitational Wuxi Classic in China in July.
“I played well all week and although I didn’t always score fantastically, I didn’t give my opponents many chances,” said Leicester-based Selby.

Dimitri Jungo - Switzerland Serge Das loses second final in a row
In a suspense-packed final match, Dimitri Jungo (SUI) won 8:5 over Serge Das (BEL) and took the title of the Dynamic German Open Euro-Tour 2011.
The start of the match was definitely not according to Das’ liking. Jungo played excellent safety shots while Das was almost always able to come up with a reasonable resafe. However, when the scoreboard showed 3:1 in favour of Jungo, Das pocketed a difficult 10-ball and scratched. Instead of getting closer to Jungo, the score was now 4:1 in favour of the Swiss player. “That was very important for me. I really thought that I would get more momentum going now”, said Jungo, “but instead I gave the lead away too carelessly.”. Not at all being frustrated, Das started an impressive comeback and was able to even tie the match at 4:4. Since both players took very long time for their shots, a shot clock was imposed on the match at that time by the tournament officials. Both players seemed to suffer from that since they started missing easy shots.
“Actually, I like to play with the shot clock since I was always a fast player”, stated Jungo, “however, when you start a match without the clock and then have to adjust to it, you start missing easy shots.” After the 4:4, Jungo took a time out. He came back and benefitted in the next two racks from Das’ mistakes, gaining a 6:4 lead over Das. Again Das tried to come back but this time he was not so successful. When Jungo was on the hill at 7:5, Das broke the balls, made two of them and left a good safety shot for Jungo. Jungo missed and Das was about to run that rack when he left the 9-ball hanging over the pocket. That was the end for him in this event. Jungo potted the remaining two balls and won the match 8:5. He is the Dynamic German Open Champion 2011.

Oliver Ortmann - Germany Souquet out !
In a match that contained all ingredients that a real thriller must have, Oliver Ortmann (GER) eliminated Radoslaw Babica (POL) from the event.
The match went ahead as tight as expected. In the beginning, Babica seemed to be the steadier player. He had the better defensive break and ran his racks while Ortmann needed Babica to make mistakes in order to put points in his account. Babica looked like the sure winner when he could not get position on the 10-ball in the 12th rack, already leading 7:4. Both players missed the 10-ball but Ortmann proved to have the better nerves. “I got a second life in that rack and I wanted to make use of it”, said Ortmann after the match. Missing the 10-ball in that rack was the beginning of Babica’s downfall. In the next rack, Ortmann was able to pocket a combination shot, playing the 1-ball on the 10-ball, making the score 6:7 from his point of view. Then, Babica played a poor safety shot and again gave Ortmann the opportunity to win another rack. Hill-hill match! Then both players took a time-out. When they came back, it was Ortmann’s break. He saw Tony Drago in the audience and told him to leave. “Tony and I are friends and I like him but every time when he is watching my matches I lost”, stated a superstitious Ortmann. Not today though. Ortmann broke the balls and had two easy shots in front of him to line up a combination shot with the 3-ball into the 10-ball. He called the 10-ball and made it, winning the thriller in Brandenburg tonight with 8:7.

Ivo Aarts - Netherlands Aarts defeats Chinakhov in second winner’s round
In an encounter that was completely turned around, Ivo Aarts (NED) outscored former Junior World Champion Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) with 8:4.
In the beginning, the match looked much more promising for Chinakhov than it did for his opponent. Chinakhov took a quick 3:0 lead over Aarts and everyone expected a nice walk in the park for the Russian. But then the tide turned in the match. Aarts opened his account and won his first rack, just to take a time-out right after that. Whatever happened during the time-out, it certainly worked in Aarts’ favour.
Ivo came back and played a completely different game. He managed to tie the match at 3:3. Then, Chinakhov tried to stop Aarts’ run and made it 4:3 in his favour. However, that was the last rack that the Dutch junior player allowed for Chinakhov to get. He ran rack after rack and benefitted from Chinakhov’s mistakes and his own strong performance. 8:4 was the final score in favour of Aarts who will go straight into the winner’s qualification round. Chinakhov will et another chance in the loser’s bracket.

WITH THE 2011 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool set for 6-11 September in Manila, local heroes Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante are confident of taking down pool’s most coveted team title for the third time.
Winners of the inaugural event in Newport, Wales in 2006, the veteran Filipino legends added to that in Manila in 2009, when they defeated the German pair of Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann in what was described as one of the greatest pool finals ever.
Sporting a combined age of 103 years, the pair will be the oldest in the competition, but not many will be betting against them.
“We still have some gas left in the tank,” said Bustamante. “The problem is when one of us misses a shot, our arthritis acts up,” he joked.

The Action Report is excited to announce TAR 21: Pagulayan vs Van Boening on September 23-25. This epic match between two world class players is a continuation of their ongoing rivalry that has given us some of the best matches in recent times.
In May of 2008 Shane and Alex played a race to 100 TAR match at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Shane dominated for the first two days then Alex made what many have said was the best comeback performance ever. Down by fifteen games on the final day he caught Shane at 92-92 and went on to win the match.
Since that day Shane has been awaiting his chance at a rematch and now it's here.
The match is a race to 100, Ten Ball played on a nine foot Diamond table. It will take place in the new TAR Studio located in Las Vegas, NV. The match will be played September 23-25. Match play will begin at 7 PM Eastern each day. The format is that they will play the first day until one reaches thirty five wins, second day until one gets to seventy wins and finish the set on the third day. It is a $10,000 per man entry fee. Winner takes all. You can watch the entire match live as it happens via streaming Pay Per View on theactionreport.com . The price for the live coverage is $35 for a three day package or $15 per single day. The coverage will feature three camera coverage with camera operators to bring you all the angles. You'd better move fast if you want entry into this tournament being run in the same fashion as the Paris Open, with players in the "Big Shark" and Little Shark" categories... The former paying a modest entry fee but needing to win through qualifiers to enter the main event, and the latter paying a slightly higher entrance fee as "Big Sharks" but without having to pre-qualify.
Despite using the same format, the prize fund is much smaller than The Paris Open, so it's less likely to attract the more significant international superstars, but this event could round off a lovely trip to France for the weekend, and players can register (in English) at the "Billard Facile" website.
