 | 2011 World Ten Ball Championship - Players List Announced |
2011 World Ten Ball Championship World Trade Center Roxas Boulevard, Cultural Center Complex Manila Bay Area Metro Manila Philippines www.rayasports.com
9-15 May 2011
Full Player List Published for 2011 Event
The fifth edition of the World 10 Ball Championship gets underway in less than two weeks, and organisers RayaSports have announced the full list of 128 entrants, minus the 14 names still to be determined at the Qualifier Tournaments held directly preceding the main event in Manila.
The championship will be played in the main hall of the World Trade Center in the Manila Bay Area in Metro Manila, and you can tell this is a very popular event with the European players as they comprise nearly a third of the field, including 8 Brits (counting Raj Hundal but not Lee Chenman), 6 Germans, 4 Spanish, 3 Croatians, 2 Dutch, 2 Poles, and a generous smattering of others from Finland to Russia.

Matches are underway in China with a good number of representatives from Europe in the mix, including what seems like more Brits than an average GB9 event, although is it me or are they all in the same groups? Either way, they're all vying for the title and a sizeable chuck of the whopping prize fund on offer at this event, which, to everyone's surprise, was won by the home nation last year.
Well promoted and very reliably organised, the China 9 Ball Open is a perennial favourite of the players because of the superb playing conditions and very generous $250,000 prize fund. Last year, Shane Van Boening was the best placed westerner, but even his efforts ended in the quarter-finals as the Chinese and Filipino's ruled the end game in the men's event. Ultimately, Chinese Taipei's Zhang Yulong beat Antonio Lining from the Philippines in a nail-bitingly close 11-9 final. The ladies title also went East as the then unheard of Chen Siming bested the much fancied Allison Fisher 9-7, with Ireland's Karen Corr placed joint 3rd.
Qualifying rounds have just been completed and the final field of 64 players in the men's division have started off with the now familiar double elimination format utilising 8 groups of 8 players, to whittle the field down to the final 32, who then play single elimination to determine the eventual winner. The same format will be used for the ladies event, albeit with smaller numbers.

 | All players invited to register for 2011 Interpool Open |

Friday-Sunday 2/3/4 June 2011
Click the image to view the larger poster (use "back" to return here). European players invited once again to Sweden
Raj Hundal has completely dominated this event over the last two years, winning it in 2009, admittedly by the finest of margins, with an 11:10 victory in the final over Sweden's Marcus Chamat.
In 2010 "The Hitman" retain his title with yet another defeat of tournament host and local favourite Marcus Chamat, this time with a more solid 11:7 scoreline.
This is always a popular event, and often features extra "Special Events" like ring-games and one-rack-shootouts, and in recent years it has been attended by the likes of Niels Feijen, Tony Drago, Mika Immonen, Estonia's Dennis Grabe, and World 3 Cushion Champion Torbjörn Blomdahl, among other celebrity players, (it's even rumoured that Rodney Morris might be coming in June) but this year the challenge is clear...
"Can you beat this guy?"

BWPPA Ranking Event No.2 - The Midlands Open Rileys American Pool and Snooker Club - Birmingham 21-22 Essex Street Birmingham West Midlands B5 4TR www.bwppa.org www.rileysltd.co.uk

Roy Kimberley - England Kimberley keeps on rolling at the Midlands 9-ball Open
The BWPPA held it's 2nd event of the 2011 season on the 16th/17th April 2011 with the Dynamic Billiards Midlands 9-ball Open held at Rileys Birmingham. The tour was hit by a few absences due to illness as with it’s season opener with some of the regular tour players unable to compete due to illness. Despite this, the event still attracted a strong field of 14 players, and there was some great pool on show as usual at these events. “The Sandman” Roy Kimberley increased his lead at the top of the rankings, with a victory in the Main Event. Roy had a tough 2nd round encounter with Scotland’s Matt Duffy, Kimberley’s experience, and a kind run of the balls, told in the end as he won 7-5, he then comfortably dispatched Tony Southern 7-2 in the semi-final
Kimberley faced Duffy again in the final. Duffy struggled past Frankie Gillen 7-5 in his opener, then following his loss to Kimberley, he then beat another tough competitor Danny Luton in a match that went to hill-hill, before coming through 7-6. In the semi-final he faced No. 2-ranked player Aslam Abubaker, and dispatched him 7-4. Abubaker had whitewashed Southern 7-0 in an earlier game and looked in fine form.

My time at the 2011 Betfred World Snooker Championships will never be forgotten. I spoke to all the legends of the game, the likes of Steve Davis, John Parrot, Ken Doherty, Willie Thorne and even had time on my break to have lunch and chat with players back stage, names like John Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ali Carter, Mark Selby and the wonderful Michaela Tabb and many others. As a photographer spending hours in those hot dark black shed booths it was a pleasure and an honour not just as a photographer but as a cue sports fan to listen to these legends talk about their time, experience at the Crucible and general chit chat and watch them play. Having mentioned Pro9.co.uk every chance I got to these legends, I’m sure next year we'll be back (Pro9.co.uk)
Before the round started I asked a few fans and listened to what would make a good final and to be fair I agree. For the fans choice a Ronnie vs Allen/Hendry final... But for the good of the sport and the future of world snooker they all said one line up... Mark Allen vs Judd Trump final.
When the last match finished, all the fans left, but I walked in the middle of the Crucible floor, stood between both tables, and listened to the pure silence of the arena and thought about my time their and who I met. And quite literally, with a lump in my throat, a heavy heart and a tear or two in my eye I said in the middle of that floor where legends graced... "Thank you so much for the memories and I’ll see you next year”.

Jeremy Jones in action in Dallas, Texas. Dechaine dethrones Jones
Jeremy Jones battled through a very talented field of players to reach the very desirable "hot-seat" - the ultimate victor with no losses on the winner's side of the draw. It wasn't an easy run, as "Double J" had a few hill-hill matches on the way, including an 8:7 victory over Jonathan Pinnegar in the very first round, and another slim 8:7 victory in the late stages of the tournament over Mike Dechaine - a very talented young player from Delray Beach, Florida.
Dechaine, the 2009 winner of the World Summit of Pool in Las Vegas, apparently didn't like being in the one-loss side of the draw, because no sooner had he beaten Jeremy Sossei 8:4 and then Canada's Jason Klatt 10:8, he returned to avenge his previous loss, with a 12:10 victory over Jones in the Grand Final - taking the title Ultimate 10 Ball Champion 2011.

Who looks on form so far?
As the first round draws to a close I think it's fair to say that the matches so far have been of varied quality... Some merely sorting "the wheat from the chaff" as in-form players swept away those who didn't find their feet on the day like the 10:2 victory of Ronnie O'Sullivan over Dominic Day.
The low point so far must be the grinding battle between Rory McLeod and Ricky Walden which saw spectators leaving the arena as it was getting late, but the draw did throw in some very juicy matches, like the unpredictable battle between two of the top current performers, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson.
Indeed, fans of Judd Trump must be quietly pleased with the outlook as the second round (last 16) draw takes shape with no Higgins or O'Sullivan in his half of the draw - some say he's still too young to win the World Championship?
We'll see!
