2011 World 9-Ball Beijing Open
Matches are underway in China with a good number of representatives from Europe in the mix, including what seems like more Brits than an average GB9 event, although is it me or are they all in the same groups? Either way, they're all vying for the title and a sizeable chuck of the whopping prize fund on offer at this event, which, to everyone's surprise, was won by the home nation last year.
Well promoted and very reliably organised, the China 9 Ball Open is a perennial favourite of the players because of the superb playing conditions and very generous $250,000 prize fund. Last year, Shane Van Boening was the best placed westerner, but even his efforts ended in the quarter-finals as the Chinese and Filipino's ruled the end game in the men's event. Ultimately, Chinese Taipei's Zhang Yulong beat Antonio Lining from the Philippines in a nail-bitingly close 11-9 final. The ladies title also went East as the then unheard of Chen Siming bested the much fancied Allison Fisher 9-7, with Ireland's Karen Corr placed joint 3rd.
Qualifying rounds have just been completed and the final field of 64 players in the men's division have started off with the now familiar double elimination format utilising 8 groups of 8 players, to whittle the field down to the final 32, who then play single elimination to determine the eventual winner. The same format will be used for the ladies event, albeit with smaller numbers.
