Darren Appleton - Team Europe

Appleton Returns After Historic US Open Triumph

Following on from his superb victory at the US Open at the weekend, England’s Darren Appleton is the third player named for the European PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup side.

He joins close friend Karl Boyes and Germany’s Ralf Souquet, with the remaining two players to be named on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“I am made up! I left it late to make the team but I knew the US Open was my last chance,” said Appleton.

“I’ve been in good form over the last few months but had no luck at critical times. I prepared mentally great for the Open and it all clicked, so to win it and get a spot in Mosconi Cup is the icing on cake.

“I was desperate to make the team again especially with it being in London and I’m really excited to be playing in England.”

Cue the revolution…..snooker gets sexed up!

Sexy isn't a word usually associated with snooker, but Power Snooker is about to change all that. Power Snooker is the brand new game which is set to revolutionise the world of snooker, and bring a brand new audience to the sport.

It's a new game with new rules and a new look. Part of that look is the introduction of the Power Girls; three sexy stunners who will be on hand to escort the players to the playing table, and be around the stage to assist when needed.

The three girls were hand-picked from a bevy of beauties to be given the accolade of being the first Power Girls.

Rod Gunner, chairman of Power Snooker says: "We were very clear on what we were looking for. It was important the girls matched the Power Snooker brand criteria; Power Girls are sexy, sassy and very elegant, and these three fit the bill perfectly. We had to look through hundreds of images of gorgeous females until we found the ideal ones…..it's a tough job but someone's got to do it!"

The three Power Girls are 21 year old Peta Todd from Essex and 22 year old Hollie Peers from Manchester, both beautiful brunettes, along with glamorous blonde Danni Wells aged 19 from Coventry.

The Power Snooker audience will get to see the girls in the flesh at the inaugural Power Snooker event on 30th October at Indigo2 arena in London.

"Dynamite" Darren Appleton wins thrilling 15-13 victory over USA's Corey Deuel

It's impossible to describe the level of tension experienced by the die-hard fans in Europe who watched until 4:15am, sitting on the edge of their seats, as Britain's Darren Appleton nurtured and cajoled the smallest of head-starts all the way to the hill in this race-to-13 (win by 2 clear racks) final of the 35th annual edition of the US Open 9 Ball Championship.

Heaven only know's what kind of pressure Darren was feeling, but European hearts stopped beating as, with all due respect to him, Corey caught a gear and pulled level, and then even took a 13-12 lead over the former English pool player from West Yorkshire, in the most decisive stage of the match.

Battling in the toughest tournament of his career, Appleton showed that he too could come from behind, took the next three racks, and let out a might, "WHOOP" falling to the ground in elation. The 15-13 victory earns Appleton an incredible $40,000, a lifetime invitation to this event, and a place in US Open history.

------------------------------

Founded in 1976 by Barry Behrmann, this year marks the 35th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships - widely considered to be the most significant annual pool tournament held on US soil, and this year they are celebrating a full 256 player field for the first time in a decade.

The tournament is open to all-comers, although the $500 entry fee keeps the standard high, and in a unique twist all previous champions are given free entry to this tournament for life. There is still $50,000 added to the prize fund - guaranteed, no matter how many entrants had enlisted, and there's seating for up to 300 fans to watch in the playing arena.

Women play alongside the men, and Europe is well represented in this event - it has been won by Finland's Mika Immonen twice in as many years, so we've all got our fingers crossed for a good performance from our players.

Ortmann has become the first European to ever win three World Championships

Oliver Ortmann has made history once again. Germany's Ortmann cemented his pool legacy with a sound victory over World #1 Mika Immonen of Finland. This is his third World Championship title, which is a new record for Europeans. Previously only Mika Immonen (Finland) and Thorsten Hohmann (Germany) held two World Championship belts aside from Ortmann. The only other man to win three World Championships sanctioned by the WPA is USA's Earl Strickland. The Predator World Tournament of 14.1 was produced by Dragon Promotions and hosted by Breaker Billiards and owner Ricky Coren. This is the 70th edition of the straight pool event, making it the world's oldest tournament.

The World Tournament was played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event started play on October 6,2010 and ended on October 11th. The greatest straight pool players from around the world arrived on USA's east coast again to New Jersey, and was vying in this prestigious event to win the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion. The event was co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, www.Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.

Earlier in the day, Ortmann defeated Netherland's Huidji See in the semi-finals 200 to 126. It was not a pretty match as neither player could get on a long run. Huidji had previously lost to Ortmann in the finals of the 2007 World Tournament. In the other semi-finals, Immonen cruised over former World 14.1 Champion Thorsten Hohmann 200 to 65. This would be Immonen's second consecutive finals at The World Tournament, and third final four appearance.

In the finals, the audience and players were informed in the announcements that history would be made today. One of the two remaining players would have a record three World Championship wins. In addition, Immonen could win his first 14.1 World title, or Ortmann could become the first non-American to win two World 14.1 titles.

Stroud company makes debut at Asian Games

When the 16th Asian Games, second only in size to the Olympics, gets underway in China next month it will be a significant occasion for Gloucestershire billiard cloth manufacturer Milliken.

For the first time Stroud-based Milliken is providing the Games organisers in Guangzhou with two of its most-successful brands, SuperPro for eight and nine-ball pool and Strachan 6811 for the snooker programme.

The company has been building its business in Asia for many years and is currently the official cloth supplier to the Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports.

Two million tickets go on sale this month and 8,000 competitors will attend the opening ceremony on November 12.

“Snooker is extremely popular in China and the Far East and we are delighted to be invited to take part as a specified supplier,” reports Milliken marketing director Duncan Kettell.

Super Souquet wins in Sarajevo Looking for the solid phenolic table tops throughout the event, Ralf Souquet stylish precision, meticulous attention to detail, and super-human nerves of steel carried him relentlessly towards the enormous 10-Ball trophy on offer in Sarajevo - breaking a six-month dry-spell without a title for "The Surgeon" - Germany's most decorated player. The final day of action saw the Last 32 round matches played out to the nationally televised final stages, and with Appleton, Peach, Hundal, Boyes and Dalmatin all big name players looking threatening in the Quarter-Finals - all appeared to be in with a shout of taking the trophy. Ultimately it was India's Raj Hundal who won through to the final and it was a good-natured but relatively one-sided affair as nothing could stop the irresistible force of "The Kaiser" as he cruised to a 10-4 victory - the commentators really appreciating Rajs fun gesture of literally "throwing in the towel" so Ralf didn't need to shoot the final ball of the match. In an interview afterward, Ralf thanked the organizers and sponsors who had worked so hard to make the event happen, he thanked the audience for staying so late to watch the final, and he thanked his opponent for the challenge. With an impish grin on his face, Raj's interview was just three words, "I hate Ralf" he said. The audience and Ralf fell about laughing, appreciating the humor, and Raj packed his cues with a big smile on his face. The perfect end to a great tournament that was enjoyed by the players and fans watching the free video live-stream around the world. Solid Phenolic Table Tops "Read More..." for the details. Ralf Souquet - Team Europe

Kaiser Returns for 14th Appearance

HAVING MADE his PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup debut in the inaugural 1994 event, Germany’s Ralf Souquet returns to the fray for Team Europe as they attempt to win back the most coveted trophy in pool.

It will be Souquet’s 14th appearance in the 17 year history of the Trans-Atlantic billiards tussle – a record he will be sharing with Johnny Archer of the USA. ‘The Kaiser’ has a record of 39 wins from 65 matches; an all-time Mosconi Cup record equalled only by Earl Strickland.

The 1996 World Champion and 2006 US Open winner, has been on the winning side three times – ’02, ’07 and ’08 and he will be keen to repeat his feat of 2007 when he downed the winning 9 ball in Las Vegas.

Souquet is a veteran of the York Hall though, having played there on all six occasions the Mosconi Cup has been staged in the historic London venue.

“I am absolutely overwhelmed by the fact that the Mosconi Cup will be back at the York Hall,” said Souquet.

World Tournament - Sweet Revenge: Immonen Demolishes Sigel

Mika celebrates a very personal win over Sigel at the World Tournament Two days ago Mika Immonen took an extremely hard loss in the controversial match with legendary 3x World 14.1 Champ Mike Sigel. Last night Mika had an opportunity for payback, and the outcome was poetic sweet revenge for the Finnish champion. Mika was able to take out Sigel in magnificent style Saturday night in a packed arena for the live streaming of The Predator World Tournament of 14.1 produced by Dragon Promotions. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world's oldest tournament. The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event started play on October 6,2010 and ends on Columbus Day October 11th. The greatest straight pool players from around the world have arrived on USA's east coast again to New Jersey, and vying in this prestigious event to win the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion. The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, www.Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats. Sigel ran 100&out against Immonen in a 100 to 11 route of the World #1 Immonen during the round robin stage. This put Mika in extreme danger of not qualifying. During this loss, Sigel made a questionable hit on the cueball. Mika called it a foul, Sigel disagreed. He continued his run and never gave Mika another chance at the table. Immonen refused to shake his hand afterwards. In the aftermath review of the tape, Tournament Director John Leyman said it was a clear and obvious foul. At this point, it was too late.
