Holland B 8 - 5 Taiwan
HOLLAND B, a team made up of 19 year-old Roy Gerards and Gijs van Helmond, produced a stunning upset as they held their nerve to deposit heavy favourites Taiwan out of the competition.
The duo had won a qualification tournament in Rotterdam three weeks ago, beating Rico Diks and Alex Lely in the final match.
However, they were given little hope, against a Taiwanese team consisting of recent World Tenball finalist Wu Chia-ching and fellow countryman Wang Hung-hsiang.
They overturned the formbook in an inspired display at the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam, aided and abetted by some glaring errors from the Taiwanese.

Dutch Lose Battle of Lowlands - Giant Killing Belgians Do It Again

HOLLAND A, consisting of Niels Feijen and Nick van den Berg, went spinning out of the 2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as their neighbours Belgium put in a composed performance to comfortably win their first round match at the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam.
8 – 3 was the scoreline as the Belgian duo of the classy Serge Das and gutsy Noel Bruynooghe were always ahead of the game. Both sides had plenty of support but the Dutch duo, looking a little ragged at times, did not perform at their best.
The Belgians came in as late reserves last year and reached the quarter-final, including a victory over a Taiwanese side of 2005 World Champion Wu Chia-ching and Yang Chung-shun.
This victory was all the sweeter as the Dutch and the Belgians have a long-standing rivalry in sporting arenas.

Alex Lely reports the results from our favourite club in Amsterdam!!!
Other than on some 10-ball world championship in Manilla, won by some Brit, picking up a mere $100K, main focus on last Sunday was of course on the 10-ball tournament in Club 8, Amsterdam.
54 players coughed up the fifteen Euro, inspired as they were to have a go at 10-ball. Only races to 5, many players could win this one, although Lely was favorite to win as the Terminator, El Nino and Houdgini were still in Manila.

BOBBY McGRATH WINS 2008 INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2008 ESPN ZONE BILLIARDS SHOOTOUT was held October 1 in Las Vegas. Bobby McGrath defeated Dave Pearson for the INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE crown and the $40,000 purse. ESPN Zone Las Vegas was host to the event, which was taped for three 1-hour telecasts on ESPN and the first ever to be broadcast in High Definition.
The Third Annual INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE drew an international lineup battling for the $40,000 winner-take-all prize. The action in Speed Pool is fast and furious (the speed of light compared to 9-ball) with two sets, twelve racks in each set, the first set Straight Pool and the second set 8-Ball. Players routinely run racks of fifteen balls in about 1-minute and the player with the lowest accumulated time for twelve racks wins the match.

Holland B Qualifying Event Concludes
Gijs van Helmond and Roy Gerard will represent Holland B at the forthcoming PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool after they won through a tough qualifying event in Rotterdam last Sunday 21st September.
The dynamic duo overcame the experienced pairing of Alex Lely and Rico Diks 8-5 in the final to make their way into the 32 team event which takes place from 7-12 October at Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam.
There they will face a tough opening round match against the Taiwanese side consisting of 2005 World Champion Wu Chia-ching and Wang Hung-hsiang on the evening of Wednesday 8th October.
With the host nation allowed two teams in the competition, current World Straight Pool Champion Niels Feijen and European No.5 Nick van den Berg will also fly the flag for Holland A as they face off against bitter rivals Belgium on the opening night of the event.

UPC Season Preview 2008-09
The Universities Pool Council is pleased to announce the details of its programme for the coming season with competitions to decide the champions at individual, team and representative level. With many previously strong teams losing key players due to graduation, the season ahead looks to be wide open.
The season begins with the UPC Nine-ball Championships over the weekend of 12-14 December at Riley's, Solihull where Cardiff University will be vehemently trying to avoid surrendering their Championship title despite the loss of key members of the winning team.
