UPC Season Preview 2008-09

The Universities Pool Council is pleased to announce the details of its programme for the coming season with competitions to decide the champions at individual, team and representative level. With many previously strong teams losing key players due to graduation, the season ahead looks to be wide open.

The season begins with the UPC Nine-ball Championships over the weekend of 12-14 December at Riley's, Solihull where Cardiff University will be vehemently trying to avoid surrendering their Championship title despite the loss of key members of the winning team.

Following the recent announcement of an exciting new partnership with Vauxhall Holiday Park, Great Yarmouth, we now have the capacity to hold the BUCS-UPC Eight-Ball Championship, Trophy, Shield and Individual Championship concurrently on the weekend of 19-22 February 2009. This epic event will see Ulster (Coleraine) bid to win the Team Championship for an unprecedented third year running, with Rich Wharton (Anglia Ruskin) aspiring to join Paul Edwards as a multiple winner of the Individual Championship.

The Women’s Eight-ball Championship will be held in Riley's, Coventry in March where attention will be focused on whether any university can challenge Oxford’s continued dominance of this event.

The season wraps up with the representative event – Student Eight-ball Pool Home Internationals – held in Dublin and will incorporate the BUCS Home Nations. Team England, led by their charismatic manager Jon Shapland, will be determined to retain their title against a no doubt strong and passionate Irish side on home soil.
