20 year old American Billy Thorpe upsets two world champions to storm into the final 16 at the Molinari Players Championship in New York City.

For several years up through 2015, Billy Thorpe made a name for himself on the American pool scene as a dashing young talent with a hot stroke who dared to playand win ridiculously high stakes money games. Then in 2016 the then 19 year old decided he wanted to transition into being a real pro, and for the last year he has slugged it out with the big boys in tournaments big and small, attracting attention from pool fans eagerly looking for the next great American player.
Thorpe did create some noise in 2016, but history will surely show that it was in New York City on a cold Sunday in January, 2017, when the brash Dayton, Ohio native truly arrived as a professional, and stamped his mark as possibly that next great American pool player.
Playing with a panache and heart that belied his years, the now 20 year old Thorpe created one of the biggest stories of the first 8-ball event of the four-tournament World Pool Series, by taking down two world champions and barging into the final 16 of the Molinari Players Championship.
In a round of 64 TV table match, Thorpe played marvelously in defeating heavily favored three-time world English 8-ball champion Mick Hill, 13-11. Then, in the final 32, Thorpe roared back from an 11-8 deficit to tie former World 9-ball Champion Alex Pagulayan, 12-12. The young American then dramatically won the match by sinking all five shots in the thrilling shootout to advance to the final 16 on Monday.

Englands Darren Appleton promised his fellow players that his new World Pool Series would give the players exactly what theyve always wanted; a players centered tour with rules and a setup designed to test the worlds best pool players to the limits of their skills.
If the results of Day 1 of the tours first event, the Molinari Players Championship, are any indication, that promise has already been fulfilled.
Long races, pockets at a stingy 4.25 inches, breaking outside the center box, having to take what you make on the break, 3-foul rule, shootouts on hill-hill matches, and single elimination; these tweaks to traditional 8-ball rules all came together Saturday to prove that the worlds most popular cue game can truly be a hardcore test of pool.

Its common at big international pool tournaments wherever the greats of the game come together, that a buzz of anticipation courses through the hotel lobby or the arena where the players gather the day before at the players meeting. But at Steinway Billiards in the Astoria, Queens section of New York City on Friday night, that buzz had some noticeable extra juice to it.
Thats because the newly formed World Pool Series, a four event tour that begins Saturday and will play out over the course of 2017, seems to have all the ingredients to finally offer long suffering professional pool players something they havent had in a long time; a player centric tour with a solid plan for growth. The fact that its all been put together by one of the games greatest and most respected players, Englands Darren Appleton, has surely boosted players belief that this tour will be a major part of their future as players.
The first event of the new 8-ball tour, The Molinari Players Championship, kicks off at Steinway Billiards in New York City on January 14 and concludes on Jan. 17. 119 players from 35 countries will be slugging it out in 8-ball for over $100,000 in prize money. The winner will collect $20,000.
The next three events, The Aramith Masters Championship, The RYO Rack Classic Championship, and the Predator World Series Championship, tentatively also scheduled to be held at Steinway, will be held in April, July and September respectively, with the final event being billed as the Grand Finale. The total prize fund for the four events will be around $425,000 with $85,000 of that being added money.

GB9 Launches 2017 Tour
The GB 9 Ball Tour are pleased to announce their plans for the 2017 season. Applications are now being taken with the closing date for applications and deposits extended until 15 January 2017..
We are pleased to announce that the tour will once again host all five of its events at the stunning Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Telford and are hugely grateful for the continued support given by the hotel and its staff.
The tour can only continue with the dedicated support that has been previously shown by its members and we require at least 90 signed up members (applications and deposits) by 15 January 2017. If the required number of members do not sign up for the tour the hotel are likely to not want to continue its support and the tour will not proceed, which is something that nobody wants to happen.
The tour will be limited to the first 96 signed up members and we have already began receiving player applications. Once all spots have been filled your name will be added to a reserve list and you will be contacted if a spot becomes available. If you are not one of the first 96 registered players your deposit will be refunded.

Daniel Lee is the Predator Cues British wheelchair 9-ball Champion and takes top spot
12 months on from claiming his first main event title on the BWPPA tour Daniel Lee became the British 9-ball champion again, but this time the win came with added significance as Lee ends the season as the UK's number 1 wheelchair pool player.
The Wheelchair Cuesports Academy at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury was once again the setting for the final tour stop of the season. Before the first ball was struck it was a three horse race for the top spot, with Fred Dinsmore and Roy Kimberley also in the running, but Lee knew if he progressed further than Dinsmore or Kimberley, then he would be assured of his place at the summit of the worlds largest wheelchair pool tour.
