 | 2016 Mosconi Cup XXIII - Two captains named for MC XXIII |
2016 Mosconi Cup XXIII Alexandra Palace Alexandra Palace Way London Greater London N22 7AY www.matchroompool.com - facebook - twitter - instagram - youtube www.alexandrapalace.com
Tuesday-Friday 6-9 December 2016

Two captains named for MC XXIII MARCUS CHAMAT and MARK WILSON have been retained as respective captains of Team Europe and Team USA for the 23rd annual Mosconi Cup match which takes place at the Alexandra Palace, London from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th December. Chamat, 40, was victorious on his captaincy debut at the Tropicana in Las Vegas last year as he guided his side to an 11-7 victory. He will be hoping to make it two from two in London. The diminutive Swede’s Mosconi Cup journey began at the York Hall in 2000 when he made his debut and two years later was a key member of the European side which won for the first time in seven years. “Last year was like a dream come true for me, to be part of such a great event as the Mosconi Cup once again,” said Chamat. “I really missed it so much every year, and what was great to see was that it has really grown and got even bigger and better if that’s possible, and the best is yet to come! “I really felt like I was a part of the team and you have to prepare so differently from the players; less practice and your mindset is to get the team together and work well. “I really learnt a lot from my first year as captain, and the bad news for the American team is that I will only improve and come out even stronger. “But London is where it all started for me in 2000 and since then it’s never left my heart. With over 2,000 screaming fans, most of them from England one can only imagine what it will feel like!”

Additional event for European qualification - Bergen Open ANOTHER TOURNAMENT has been added to the Official Mosconi Cup Team Europe Ranking list as the Bergen Open is included as a Level Three event. Now in its sixth year, the Bergen Open takes place from 24th to 26th June in the beautiful Norwegian coastal town and can boast the likes of Niels Feijen, Ralf Souquet and Efren Reyes as previous winners. That maintains the number of events in the European ranking list at 12 and the tournaments are grouped into three levels. The highest is comprised of three WPA international events; the second is five Euro Tour events and the last is four smaller open events. The maximum number of points awarded for winning a qualifying tournament is 80 for a Level One event and the minimum given for a victory would be 28 for a Category Three event. There will be three separate ranking lists with the top player in each ranking gaining an automatic spot on Team Europe for the 23rd annual Mosconi Cup which takes place at the Alexandra Palace, London from 6th to 9th December. The first ranking will comprise the nine European events – ‘European Ranking’; the second will be the three WPA international events – ‘World Ranking’; the third will be made up of all 12 events – ‘Combined Ranking’.

Arena Billiards in Loughborough hosted its first 9 ball tournament this past Saturday 13th February. The club has been open just over a year now and in that time has added four American 9ft tables to bring them up to 8 in total. All the tables have been re-cushioned and all had been re-clothed is last few months/weeks with Simonis 860 cloth. The conditions were set for a good tournament and a good day of pool for all those in attendance and with added bonus of £150 added to main pot and £50 for the plate 1 rack shoot out by the club.
There were 27 entrants in attendance on the day we were just shy of the full field of 32. The format for the day was double elimination up to the quarter finals stages (four from the winners side and four form the losers side). It was a race to 9 on the main/winners side and a race to 7 on the losers side and winner breaks through out.
The draw was completed early in the morning and with 27 players this meant that 5 players would receive a bye in the first round and these were Dave Evans, Aslam Abubaker, Darren Hall, Tony Weafer and Mark Williams.

Another edition of the popular Bergen Open has been announced for June - this will be the sixth annual running of this tournament and the event regularly features heavily added prize money with this year's additional sum amounting to a whopping 50,000 Norwegian Krona boosting the pot, making this a very sweet deal for players from all over Europe, so get signed up now for your share of the action.
The 2016 Bergen Open 9-Ball is sanctioned by EPBF as a Category C tournament. This means that you will get points towards your European Ranking (just like Euro Tours) so subsequently this has been made a no handicap tournament but with different entry fees for different standards of players. The format will be double elimination from 64-16 or from 132-32, and single elim from then onwards.
Ralf Souquet is the defending champion and everyone is hoping to see him there again this year - he's confirmed as long as there is no other tournament in which he is contractually obliged to participate.

Friday - Sunday 29/30/31 January 2016

Click the image to view the larger photo - use "back" to return here. The opening event of the 2016 season has concluded at the Park Inn hotel in Telford, with Mark Gray, Craig Osborne, Chris Fraser and Louis Callaghan walking away with the titles. GRANITE DEMOLISHES HALL FOR THIRD TITLE The 2016 Midlands Classic final was contested by two former winners of this event – 2014 champion Chris Hall, and 2009 and defending champion Mark Gray, with both looking at a second and third Midlands Classic title respectively. Gray began the tournament in typically imperious form, whitewashing Craig Reynolds 9-0 to proceed to the next round. Kurtis Weaver was his next opponent and, whilst he provided a tougher test, Gray still marched on to the winners qualifying round with a 9-5 win. Fellow tour stalwart Andy Worthington was aiming to secure his place in the last 16, but Gray instead found a winning formula to take his rightful place in the single elimination stage wth a hard fought 9-7 win. In the last 16 it was Matthew Hyden looking to make a maiden quarter final at the expense of Gray, but the player they call Granite held strong with a 9-6 victory. Fellow professional Daryl Peach was looking for his first GB9 title since November 2014, but his run ended in the last 8 with Gray winning 9-5. Last up trying to pry the Midlands Classic title from Gray’s grasp was Imran Majid, but Gray’s steady form continued – another hard earned 9-6 win took him into the final and one match from completing a successful defence of his title. Hall, winner of this event two years ago, Started in a similarly dominant manner to Gray. He successfully made his way into the winners qualifying round with 9-1 and 9-2 wins over Julian Roper and Bob Harris respectively. Martyn Taylor, however, was soon to put a halt to proceedings. He put Hall on the wrong side of a 9-4 score line, taking Taylor safely into the last 16 and dumping Hall into the last chance saloon losers qualifying bracket. Hall was in no mood to hang around there, however, and a swift 7-2 win over Mark Parker ensured his safe passage to the last 16. Chris Cowie was unable to make it any further in the tournament, and Hall took a 9-6 victory to secure his place in the quarter finals. The Yorkshireman met the Cornishman in the last, as the character and ever improving Robin Cripps stood in the way of Hall and the semi finals. Hall copied his exploits of the previous round in securing a 9-6 win, meaning Damian Overton was the last person who could stop Hall. Overton was looking for a GB9 final appearance at his very first attempt, but as hard as he tried it was Hall to reigned supreme. 9-7 was the winning score, and Hall continued to the final. The final saw Gray take the initiative from the word go and never relinquish control of it. He ran away with an 11-4 victory to become the first player to win the Midlands Classic title a third time. Gray’s victory saw him take a provisional ranking of #12 over just three events, whilst Hall’s run to the final saw him rise to a career high of #3. Craig Osborne, despite not reaching the last 16, remains comfortably in top spot.

 | 2016 Mosconi Cup XXIII - Team USA ranking events |
2016 Mosconi Cup XXIII Alexandra Palace Alexandra Palace Way London Greater London N22 7AY www.matchroompool.com - facebook - twitter - instagram - youtube www.alexandrapalace.com
Tuesday-Friday 6-9 December 2016

Team USA qualification series announced MATCHROOM SPORT can announce the Official Mosconi Cup Team USA Ranking Events for the 2016 Europe v USA match which takes place at the Alexandra Palace in London from 6th to 9th December. Three of the five spots on Team USA will be allocated to the three highest placed players on the ranking list following the conclusion of the US Open in October. The roster of events has been significantly expanded from 2015 and this year there are a total of 25 tournaments which carry Mosconi Cup points. These events have been grouped into three categories: Category One is major international events both in the USA and overseas; Category Two is events played on 9 foot tables in the US and Category Three is events taking place in the US played on 7 ft tables. In addition, within Categories Two and Three there are three separate grades each, making a total of seven levels of points through the three Categories. The maximum number of points a winner can receive would be 80 for winning a Category One event. The least number would be 21 points for winning a Category Three, Grade Three event. Commented a spokesman for Matchroom Sport, “For 2016, we’ve decided to be as inclusive as possible and involve more and more tournament promoters across the USA. This gives players many more opportunities to play for Mosconi Cup ranking points and may cut down on some of the expense of playing every single event as in previous years. “We’re also creating a strong connection to the Mosconi Cup with a variety of promoters and pool rooms across the USA which can only be good for everyone involved in this fantastic event. With such a range of points available, players can pick and choose which events they play in and it will all culminate at the US Open next October. Matchroom Sport will be publishing regular ranking lists as the season develops.”
