The Hatchetman: ‘I’ll chop ‘em up!’
DENNIS HATCH, a Mosconi Cup MVP back in 2009, becomes the fourth member of the American team at this year’s PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup and will take his place alongside Johnny Archer, Shane Van Boening, Rodney Morris and an as yet unnamed final member when the USA and Europe do battle at the Mirage Hotel from 2nd to 5th December.
The 42 year-old from Buffalo, New York made his debut that year after he came out top in a wildly popular ‘fan’s vote’ for the final place on the team. Once in Vegas, he became the Americans’ talisman as he won four out of his five matches to lead the team to an emotional victory.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be part of this incredible USA team and the 20th anniversary Mosconi Cup. This event means the world to me and I live for the Cup. It’s the best atmosphere there is and there is nothing that can even come close to comparing it to,” said a fired up Hatchetman.

Once again the great and the good of the pool world assembled at the Hilton hotel, this time in Warwick and with the European Open and Amateur crowns up for grabs in a season that has seen some high quality pool, and a mixture of different winners, implying everyone was in with a chance – except me of course.
First things first and the line up once again included raiders from around the world of pool as word slowly gets out about the prestige of the IPA tour in comparison to its so called competitors, with stand out stars such as South African superstar Sandile Madlala and France’s “darling” Christophe Lambert lining up against the usual suspects in Gareth Potts, Craig Marsh, Adam Davis, Gareth Hibbott, Lee Clough etc while in the amateur ranks, Jon McAllister was looking for a pretty much unprecedented hat trick after winning at Bradford and Glasgow. With the tables in place and the new double elimination format giving everyone a second chance the stage was set for a contest worthy of its title and we weren’t going to be let down!

Feijen in for 9th Mosconi outing
NIELS FEIJEN is today named as the third member of Team Europe and will make his ninth appearance in the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup when the 20th anniversary event takes place at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 2nd to 5th December.
Dutchman Feijen, who sports a highly impressive 59% win record over the years, made his debut in the Mosconi Cup in the crushing 1-12 defeat of 2001 but has since gone on to be an integral part of the winning sides of 2007, ’08, ’11 and ’12, including MVP honours in 2011.
The Dutchman, who came so close to winning the World Cup of Pool last week, will move to fourth on the all-time European Mosconi Cup appearances list, and joint fifth with Rodney Morris on the overall roll call.
“This is the most prestigious event of the year to play in and since this year is a very special edition, I'm honoured to make the team,” said Feijen.

TEAM PHILIPPINES made up of Lee Vann Corteza and Dennis Orcollo became 888.com World Cup of Pool champions as they beat Holland in a thrilling conclusion after an action-packed final that illustrated the sheer excitement of top level pool.
The match ebbed and flowed and reached a climactic final stage that saw both teams buckle before the Filipinos redeemed themselves sinking the 8 and 9 for the title and $60,000 top prize. It was the third win for the Philippines in the eight year history of the event, following wins for Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante in 2006 and 2009.
This year they enjoyed wins over Croatia, Singapore, Hungary and Chinese Taipei en route to the final but the best was to come in the championship match.
Orcollo was delighted in victory, “The fans here were why we won. There was a lot of pressure and things became very difficult but the Filipino community in London who supported us throughout really helped us through.
“I reached the final of the World Cup in Manila in 2010 but we came up short so it is fantastic to win here in London. I would love it for me and Lee Vann to defend the World Cup in the Philippines next year as it would be a dream come true to win it again in our home country,” he added.
Corteza continued, “You have to thank those Philippines supporters who helped us through. Representing my country is such a big honour for me and I’m very thankful and proud to have won the World Cup of Pool for the Philippines.”

Semi Finals Holland 9-4 Finland Philippines 9-7 Chinese Taipei
THE FINAL of the 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool will be between Holland and the Philippines after both enjoyed semi-final victories at the York Hall in front of an enthralled crowd. The Philippines came through a real thriller over Chinese Taipei in a match that saw both teams enjoy extended periods of dominance while Holland endured a sticky first half before running away with it against the Finns.
In the second match, both Philippines and Chinese Taiwan made mistakes in the opening racks before Corteza made an excellent combo on the 9 ball to make it 2-1 and then Ko made a bad miss in the next and they ran out in the next to make it 3-1.
An illegal break in the next got the Taiwanese back to the table and negotiated a tricky layout to reduce arrears at 2-3 but the Filipinos won the next to get the Filipino flags in the crowd fluttering.

Quarter Finals Philippines 9-1 Hungary Chinese Taipei 9-3 England A
TEAM PHILIPPINES made up of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza ended the 888.com World Cup of Pool journey of Hungary as they hammered them 9-1 to advance to Sunday’s semi-finals where they will face Chinese Taipei who beat England.
With victories over Croatia, Singapore and now Hungary, there were probably tougher routes to the final day of the event but Orcollo and Corteza barely put a foot wrong as they broke well, potted well and on the rare occasions that their opponents got to the table, it was to extricate themselves from a snooker.
The Hungarians, who qualified for the main event in a qualifying tournament in August, had put out China in the first round and then Russia in round two, will take a lot from their participation in the event and come back stronger next year.
“We were a bit lucky off the break,” said Corteza, modestly underplaying their prowess with a break stick.
“We always had a ball on and we tried to make the most of it. We didn’t really give them that many chances so we’re really pleased to be through to the finals.”
“Last year (in Manila) we lost in the first round but this year, being in London, there’s not so much pressure so we’re trying to relax and play our best. It’s either England or Taiwan tomorrow but both teams are very good so we’ll have to come with our best,” he added.
On today’s form, the Philippines will be favourites to take their third 888.com World Cup of Pool title.

Quarter Finals Finland 9-3 England B Holland 9-8 Japan
HOLLAND AND FINLAND both made their way through to Sunday’s semi-finals of the 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool with wins over England B and Japan respectively and they will now face each other in the first semi-final on Sunday afternoon.
The Dutch had to grind it out against Japan in a hill-hill thriller with both teams struggling at times, while the Finnish pair of Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen looked in good shape against England B as their title defence continues.
In the second match of the session, Japan and Holland both teams shared the opening racks as they tried not to give anything away with so much at stake. The Dutch pair of Nick Van den Berg and Niels Feijen could not get away from their high-spirited opponents - Lo Li-wen and Naoyuki Oi – and after six racks it was all square at 3-3.

WITH TWO days play left at the 888.com World Cup of Pool, the tournament is down to the last eight teams as Japan, Holland and England A all recorded second round wins at the York Hall in London.
With England B already through to the weekend’s quarter finals, the A team followed them in as they came from behind to beat the plucky Italian pairing of Bruno Muratore and Fabio Petroni.
The Italians enjoyed some good fortune and before long they were 4-1 to the good as the
English team of Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton sank deeper into their chairs. England took the next, but the Italians though were in stroke and they took the next to move to 5-2 and put the English under extreme pressure.
A blistering break from Muratore left them with no reward as the 1 ball was covered by the 2 and they elected to push out. England put them back in and Petroni missed with a snatched attempt at the pot on the 1 ball.
Appleton and Boyes dished up and when Boyes split the pack and left a shot on the 1 ball in the next it was enough for them to run the table and get within one of the Italians at 4-5. After some exchanges in the next, Petroni jumped the cue ball off the table gifting ball in hand to the English who accepted gratefully.
It was the turning point in the game as England broke and ran the next to reach the hill at 6-5. Boyes played a super-tight safety in what was the final rack and although the Italians escaped well, Appleton was able to pocket the 1 ball and they were on their way to victory.
“Sometimes in pool it just doesn’t go your way at the start of the match. They had a couple of nice rolls but that is pool and you have to be patient and try and fight back,” said Boyes.
“It was unbelievable to win five racks the way the match went. In the first round it went our way but this was reversed and you have to sit and be patient. We have won World Championships, US Open, Mosconi Cups, so we know how to win from behind.”
Appleton added, “I don’t think anyone else in this tournament could have won that from 5-2 down. They were getting all the luck in the world but I said to Karl we haven’t had an opportunity.
“The way we played from 5-2 was unbelievable. We made some great finishes and played some great shots. It has been a great night’s pool for everybody. They didn’t do anything wrong from 5-2 but the roll of the ball turned and we had some opportunities.
“There was a the devils playground of a lot of pressure and this is why I want to play with Karl because when pressure is on I know he will make the shot.”

Round 2 Hungary 7-4 Russia Philippines 7-3 Singapore Chinese Taipei 7-1 Greece
UNFANCIED QUALIFIERS Hungary continued where they left off against China on Wednesday as they once again made light work of more exalted opposition as they put paid to Russian hopes at the 888.com World Cup of Pool by a 7-4 score line.
There were also wins at the York Hall for Chinese Taipei and Philippines as the big guns made their move into the quarter-finals.
Balazs Mikos and Gabor Solymosi looked to be enjoying every minute of it and played in the sort of relaxed manner that can count for a lot in a high pressure event like the World Cup.
