The 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool received its first major shock today at the York Hall in East London as European qualifiers Hungary dumped two-time World Cup champions China out of the competition with a clinical 7-2 win.
The Hungarian duo of Gabor Solymosi and Mikos Balazs had scrapped their way through a European qualifying event in Croatia last month, but their respective careers to date have been fairly low key.
On the other hand, the Chinese pair of Li Hewen and Liu Haitao, have excellent track records with Li in particular, a twice winner of this event and also a bronze and silver medallist at the World Pool Championship in 2006 and 2012 respectively.
However, pedigree counted for nothing as the Hungarians played flawlessly to move into a 5-0 lead. Despite the Chinese grabbing a couple of racks, to give themselves a slim chance in the winner breaks format, they could do nothing with the break and the Hungarians cruised to the win.
We were really confident we could beat China, said a delighted Balazs.
They are very strong but we practiced a lot and we knew if it came together and we played well that we would win the match.
We have practiced a lot together to get the feel of playing together; it was practice, practice, practice. We are very happy to get through to the second round and we can win this tournament.
The tables are great, we have been practicing a lot since we arrived here to get the feel of the table and they are superb to play on. He added.
In the next round they face Russia, who completed an error-strewn 7-5 win over a Hong Kong team who went to pieces in the closing stages.

THERE were wins for three of the fancied teams at the 888.com World Cup of Pool as England B, Holland and the Philippines all made their way into the second round as play continued at the York Hall in London.
The Philippines pair of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza closed out the evening beating Croatia Karlo Dalmatin and Ivica Putnik 7-4. The Croatians were in with a chance as they stayed with their opponents in the early stages, but a succession of errors saw the team spirit drain away.
With a strong Filipino contingent in the crowd, including the Ambassador, the duo from Manila completed the win.
In the second match, England B Chris Melling and Daryl Peach were big favourites against a Portuguese team making their 888.com World Cup of Pool debut and they justified the bookmakers faith with a scrappy 7-4 win to book a second round game against Germany.
It wasnt their greatest showing but if getting into the second round was their goal, they achieved it. They took the early 3-0 lead, but then Melling failed to get out of a snooker and with ball in hand, Portugal reduced the deficit. The Portuguese pair of Manual Gama and Guilherme Sousa started to shed their early nerves and after a poor miss on the brown 7 by Melling they got the score back to 3-4.
They shared the next two racks and at 5-4 down, Portugal had every chance of springing an upset. However, they couldnt capitalise on it and the English pair held their nerve to get over the line
Most players only play a table as quick as this in Matchroom events. It is a quality table and I dont think you can find a table as quick as that, said Melling.
Most people at home dont understand the pressure you are under. At the end of the day as long as you win that is main thing. We will both go back and assess our game because we both made some mistakes but we both made some great shots as well and that is the beauty of pool.
Peach added, It is a little bit nerve wracking but its nice to get the first match and the first win under your belt.

Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. All photography courtesy of JP Parmentier / Matchroom Sport Team Finland - Mika Immonen & Petri Makkonen First session completes with wins for three favourites
Defending champions Finland Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen - are through to the second round of the 888.com World Cup of Pool following a comfortable 7-2 win over Austria as the six-day tournament got underway at the York Hall in East London.
They won five racks in a row from 2-1 down to seal victory, after Austria, represented by Jasmine and Albin Ouschan, looked set to go 3-1 ahead. Jasmine, though, miscued pocketing the brown 7 and lost position. Trying to catch up left her with a tough cut on the 9 ball which she left in the jaws of the corner pocket.
After that the tide turned as the confident Finnish duo sprinted for the line.
Its always tough in the first match. We were a bit jittery and they had a chance for 3-1 but it was a tough one for Jasmine on the 9 and she jarred it. We got in control, didnt look back and closed door, said Mika Immonen.
Were happy to get over the first hurdle. It was nerve-wracking but were just trying to stay positive for next match. He added.

Playing with a laser-like focus and an intensity that spoke of a clear desire for pool immortality, Germanys Thorsten Hohmann capped an incredible week with yet another a searing performance, and won the 2013 World 9-ball Championship, beating the Philippines Antonio Gabica, 13-7, in front of nearly 1000 highly partisan Filipino fans at Dohas Al Arabi Sports Club.
With the victory Hohmann now becomes only the second man to win the WPA World 9-ball Championship two times, matching American Earl Strickland, who won pools most prestigious crown in 1991 and 2002. Hohmann will now also take over as the World Number 1 ranked player.
Hohmanns second World 9-ball Championship comes exactly ten years after he burst on to the international scene with a powerful run through a stacked field in Cardiff, Wales in 2003. In the intervening years Hohmann has firmly established himself as one of the greats of this era, consistently winning events big and small all over the globe. He excels at various other pool disciplines as well, especially straight pool, for which he is arguably the best in the world.
But while the last ten years have placed the 34 year old Hohmann in pools elite, his performance this week in Doha has surely brought his stature into rarefied air. Along the way to the title he defeated a whos who of pool strong men, among them the defending world champion Darren Appleton, and five, yes five, top Filipino players, including four in a row down the homestretch. And dont forget to throw in the fact that Hohmann did all this in front of what was essentially a highly partisan home crowd of mostly Filipinos who cheered wildly for their boys. Looked at in total, thats a masterpiece by anyones standards.

Over a 15-plus year professional career, Antonio Gabica has often been viewed by Filipino pool fans as an extremely talented player who has a tendency to wither when faced with big time pressure situations. But for the man affectionately known as Gaga to his fellow Filipinos, that once signature trait now sits forever buried deep in the Qatari desert.
Displaying masterful, career-defining cueing prowess, and the heart of a proud lion, Gabica notched three straight pressure cooker victories today, and barged into the semi-finals of the 2013 World 9-ball Championship. There he joins three other red hot players in the race to pools pantheon, among them fellow Filipino Carlo Biado, Germanys Thorsten Hohmann, and Great Britains Karl Boyes.
Each race to 11, alternate break semi-final will feature the Philippines versus Europe. In one semi-final, Gabica will face off against Boyes. In the other semi-final, Biado will do battle with Hohmann. Both semi-final matches will be played simultaneously at the Al Arabi Sports Indoor Stadium beginning at 1:30pm Doha time(GMT +3.) The race to 13, alternate break final will begin at 5pm.
If todays incredible action is any indication, the Al Arabi will be positively rocking on Friday. Having two Filipinos in the semi-finals ensures that a huge crowd of overseas Filipinos, whose population numbers close to 200,000 in Qatar, will surely pack the 1000 seat arena. On top of this, Filipino pool fans are notoriously boisterous when it comes to rooting for their man. Both Hohmann and Boyes will no doubt be up against a wave of fan emotion, and will have to bear down extra hard to stay composed.
For the 41 year old Gabica, theres an added home-court advantage in that he has lived and worked in Qatar for the last four years, working as an assistant coach for the Qatari national pool team. Gabica, although playing under the Philippine flag, wears the colors of Qatar and is beloved by the Qataris involved in the local pool scene, and treated as one of their own. Both Filipinos and Qataris in the crowd today were cheering wildly for Gabica and at one point were even chanting his nickname, Gaga! Gaga!
