EVENT REPORT: 2013 GB9 MIDLANDS CLASSIC

The sixth season of the GB 9 Ball Tour has kicked off with a bigger bang than ever before, with Great Britain’s Phil Burford overcoming Germany’s Ralf Souquet in the final of this year’s Midland Classic.

It was apparent both before and during the competition weekend that this is to be a very different tour from last season. Dozens of players from previous years and within British shores have renewed their affiliation with the tour, but that’s about all that remains the same. Representatives from Germany, Italy, Spain and Denmark to name but a few have all come over to Great Britain to sample the tour for themselves, and it’s fair to say they’ll be taking many happy memories from their first experience of GB9 back home with them. The tournament has also been held for the first time in the magnificent Park Inn by Radisson hotel in Telford, Shropshire – a venue well situated for many of the tours’ regulars and connected well to major airports. The main event has transformed into the more conventional double elimination format in the main event with a Challenge Cup event being held for those players not making the money stages in the main event. The players are now no longer competing for medals to take home with them. Instead, each event will have a permanent trophy for the players to try and get their names on along with a beautiful salver for both finalists of the main event along with the winner of each tournament’s Challenge Cup event. All in all, the tour has taken on a new and refreshing structure which it is hoped appeals to past and present players, young and old players and, most importantly, both professional and amateur competitors looking for the best challenge possible.

Final amendments being made as players start pouring in

The Best Western Premier BHR Treviso Hotel is probably the busiest place in Quinto di Treviso today.

Taking a look around the place, the first impression comes with the check-in desk. Having been there quite often during today, I have not seen the staff having a quiet minute so far. Pool-Billiard players from all over Europe keep on pouring in, having travelled thousands of miles by airplane, car or train. Of course, that is not too much of a surprise since the contestant‘s rows for the Dynamic Billiards Italian Open has always attracted many players. However, it is always amazing to see so many talented cue artists in one place, look at them and think: "Who will be taking the trophy home this time?“ The range of players who have signed up for the event is long.

It ranges from young and new faces such as 18-year old Tobias Bongers (GER) to mature and experienced players like Aristeidis Damoulakis (GRE). Regulars like Nick v.d. Berg (NED) could be spotted as well as Evgenyi Stalev (RUS), a player who was last seen in the European billiard circuit about ten years ago.

Even former World Champion Stephan Cohen (nothing) will start the battle in tomorrow's first round after being absent for quite some tournaments now. As a highlight, even three female players complete the variety of the field.

Behind the scenes at the GB9 Midlands Classic!

Well, what can I say about my return to the GB 9 Ball Tour? I'm lost for words when it comes to describing the astounding level of improvement that has been made since I was last on tour - at this event at Rileys Barnsley in November 2009 - yes, incredible I know, but it's been THAT long since I was at a GB9 event, and perhaps others don't notice the gradual improvement, but for me the improvement is unbelievable.

Enjoy some bonus photos showing the ambiance behind the scenes at the GB9 Midlands Classic - all the great photos are courtesy of Andy Warden (©AW)... The less glorious ones are my efforts! (©BDK)

Today is the day it all kicks off!

The Pro Shop is packed and going on tour - a return to the GB 9 Ball Tour at long last after a three year drought (I woke up early because I'm so excited ) it's going to be great to be back on tour, seeing so many familiar faces as well as a lot of new ones.

I'm really glad the tour has now got it's own tables, but I've really missed going out on tour, watching great players and seeing great pool, live in the UK, and it's good to be back at long last. Please come and say hello - I'm coming home!

High quality participation in first event of this year‘s Euro-Tour

The Dynamic Billiards Euro-Tour 2013 will have its first event, The Italian Open, in Treviso, Italy, beginning on Thursday, February 28th. The Best Western BHR Treviso Hotel will once again be the host for a Euro-Tour tournament. After the previous years, the BHR Hotel is well known and loved by players as well as organizers. "We always enjoy coming here" stated Gre Leenders, President of the EPBF. "The location is perfect for us and we have received so much positive feedback from players in the recent years that we really had not to think twice whether we wanted to come back or not."

Obviously, many players confirm Leenders‘ statement. When checking the official Euro-Tour website at www.eurotouronline.eu it can be seen that by today, already 174 players from all over Europe have checked in for the take-off of this year‘s Dynamic-Billiards Euro-Tour.

Among those participants are long-time Euro-Tour regulars as well as new faces who will hopefully bring some fresh blood in the European pool scene. A total of €34.000 will be at stake for the participants, not to forget the ranking points that might be the ticket for a player to perform overseas.

Players run racks - I run tournaments!

It may sound boastful, but there's never been a more true statement than that... Imran's success on the national and European circuit has been nothing short of phenomenal - and now you have a unique opportunity to get on the fast track to success too, by benefiting from the insight Imran has garnered over years of experience, as he plans to extend his coaching hours this year.

The timing couldn't be more perfect, as the start of the season will see players needing to be on tip-top performance and being tested to the limited, with the first events of the year exposing flaws that need working on - and although Imran traditionally works in the London area, now he is prepared to travel further afield, so contact him now to discuss what he can do to take your game to the next level.

All wheelchair cue-sport players invited to compete in the BWPPA 2013 Season

The 2012 BWPPA season reached its climax, with Roy Kimberley again taking the coveted end of season no 1 spot, just edging out Tony Southern.

The new season promises to be just as exciting, as we expand our venues to include the ‘Escape Pool Bar’ in Barnsley, and hopefully later in the year, a permanent home for the tour at Stoke Mandeville.

In the last few months Kamui Tips, Simonis, and other sponsors have agreed to continue to support the tour in 2013 and beyond.

Several players who have not played on tour much in the last year or so will be returning, and Fred Dinsmore will be coming over from Ireland, and visa’s permitting we will also be hosting 2 players from Russia Alexander Prokopiev and Aleksei Grigorev.

FRANCISCO BUSTAMANTE VS. JAYSON SHAW

NOTE: For those you who missed last night's nail biting PPV Showdown between Francisco Bustamante and Jayson Shaw from the Simonis Arena and Sandcastle Billiards, it's still available on-line at Accu-Stats.com with the final play beginning around 4 am GMT, Friday the 15th. That's right GMT; we want you Europe Accu-fans to see it too - all for the about the price of a pint in some of London's finer establishments.

Don't say we didn't warn you. You're gonna hear about this one for days.

We knew that there would be there would be sledgehammer breaks, that we would have incredible shot-making, the safeties would be delicate, and that racks would be run...

WARNING: Spoilers! Only read more if you want the full thrilling match report

...Jayson ran a 3 pack on the Diamond 10 foot. All prophecies came to pass.

Scotland's 21 year old Shaw certainly showed us that his multiple Junior titles, and recent Predator tour wins, etc., were no accident tho,' it was World Champion and Hall of Famer Francisco Bustamante who got off to a 4-1 lead.

Jayson, brandishing his new Lucasi Cue, then ran his aforementioned 3 pack until the delicate safeties ensued and he sneaked ahead 6-4.

A few unforced errors plagued both players but, mostly, for Bustie it was at more critical moments. He had caught up, was about to jump ahead again when he faltered to allow Jayson to get even.

Then, Jayson, befuddled by a his second scratch in the match out of nowhere, had arms raised and palms outstretched as he looked to the heavens as if to question, "What did I do to deserve this?"

Event 1 Winner Courtney Symons accepts the trophy from the TD Nicole Hansen.

Dixon leads the rankings but Symons Takes the glass

Event One of the eagerly anticipated T9B Amateur Series 2013 wasn’t going to disappoint. There was a record entry level of 47 players which is fantastic for a single day event which included very high quality players and also many new faces which is great for UK 9ball in general.

It was always going to be a long day with the high entry and the format used which was the double chance. Nicole Hansen, T9B Tournament Director, was run off her feet all day taking results and calling matches to the tables. T9B founder Phil Wildman said, "I and many others expected an early morning finish and that perhaps we had taken on too much with the amount of players. so to have the Final starting at just a few minutes past 11pm was brilliant. I really thank Nicole for all her hard work. T9B will slightly reduce the field for event two so don’t delay your entry as I can promise you places wont be available for long."

The Total9Ball Amateur 2x Series 2013 has a few new added features this season these being the roll up pots. There are three of these and they are...

1.    The Break Dish, £1 per player is put into the break dish pot - two players per event are picked randomly to attempt a successful clearance of the nine balls. This was attempted by new player Mike Chappell and Nathan James from Neath. Both players failed to complete this so the pot rolls over to Event 2 and the prize will increase from £50.

2.    The Double Quarter Final, 50p per player is collected from the entry fee and is payed to the first player to be included in the Quarter Finals Twice. (This was won by Tem Dixon).

3.    The Jackpot, £1 per player is collected and will be paid out to the first player who remains undefeated for the whole event, if a player does this they would collect the Winners and Runners up prize as well as this accruing pot which currently has £50 rolling over.

As these pots become bigger, the excitement at T9B events will increase and players won't want to miss an event for fear of these pots being won.

The field of 47 players at event one was very strong and included Arfan Dad, Al Coton, Courtney Symons, Dave Nelson, Glen Cooney, Luke Rollison, Phil Wildman and Ramesh Gokhul to name a few. It was great to see some of Leicester's best competing... Aslam Abubaker, Barry French and Tem Dixon all achieved some great results.
