Melling and Ven den Berg stay on course

CHRIS MELLING and Nick Van den Berg continue to occupy the top two automatic spots at the top of the 2012 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup European rankings following the conclusion of the recent Italian Open in Treviso.

Melling scraped into the points with a top 32 finish while Van den Berg's place in the semi-final kept him at No.2. Spaniard David Alcaide, whose sole Mosconi Cup appearance came in Rotterdam in 2006, moves from 9th into 3rd position, six points away from the Top Two.

Tournament winner Dominic Jentsch, the 20 year-old German prospect, took 16 points and moves from 49th into the top ten. With six events to go, there are plenty of players still in contention.

REANNE Evans ended her “up-and-down” season with a record eighth successive women’s world snooker championship title.

The 26-year-old, who had been kept off the green baize for three months after being struck down with pleurisy, defeated Maria Catalano 5-3 in the final at Cambridge Snooker Centre.

“I’m just happy I’ve won,” declared Evans. “For three months, I didn’t even look at my cue – let alone pick it up. I was in too much pain.

“Touch wood, I’m over it now and, hopefully, there’s better things to come.”

It was first blood to 30-year-old Catalano as she took a tense opening frame on the blue. But the Dudley pair went into the mid-session interval all square at 2-2.

After the break, Evans put together a run of 50 and then won an epic safety battle to lead 4-2.

Still determined to fulfill her dream of a first world title, Catalano pulled one back with a 48 clearance to win on the black.

However, one scrappy frame later, Evans was crowned world champion.

“I struggled in the final,” admitted Evans, after claiming her 31st ranking title on the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association circuit. “But I gritted my teeth and stuck in there.

“(Maria) probably played the best overall. She played well all week. She’s had a great season but it just wasn’t meant to be.

“I tried to hang on as long as I could and thought, hopefully, things would turn my way – and they did.

MAGICIAN GETS THE RIGHT TRICK FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

In the final of the 2012 Paul Medati Trophy, two of the best international players in the world came head to head: 2011 World 9-Ball semi-finalist Mark Gray against 2011 Mosconi Cup debutant and defending Paul Medati Trophy champion Chris Melling.

Gray was looking to kick-start his GB9 career after a frankly dismal 12 months, but his road to the final filled him with passion and confidence that he can taste tournament victory once again. Midlands Classic runner-up James Kay was first on Gray’s hitlist, leaving the tournament with a 9-3 defeat and sending Gray through to the last 32 and a meeting with Nottingham’s Kevin Simpson. He came up against a stern test but held on for a 9-7 victory. A 9-4 victory over Darlington hotshot Phil Burford was followed up in the quarter finals with another 9-4 win, this time against Kevin Uzzell, ensuring a semi-final against the in-form Chris Hall. Gray’s professional nouse was all that really separated the two in the match, and a 9-6 victory secured his first main event final berth since 2010′s edition of the Paul Medati Trophy.

5 ways to win - just one entry fee!

Here's a cracking idea, from Scotland's very own "Wee" Stevie Capaldi - a pool tour that features no less than 5 different ways to grab some cash, and all five opportunities are included for one single entry fee.

9-Ball is the game, and apart from the main event, there's also a plate event, a 1 rack knockout, a sweepstake, and a golden break prize - incredible value.

Rileys Meadowbank is the venue for all six annual events, the first was held in March and was well received by the competitors, and with so many prizes on offer, the list of winners is full of happy punters. Chris Pringle won the main event and picked up £320 for his troubles. Michael Valentine took the runner up spot and won £150, while semi finalists - Davie Jack and Joni Holden earned £75 each.

The £80 top prize for The Plate competition was won by tournament organiser Stephen Capaldi, with Andy Morris collected £40 for his runner's up place.

The "DeathMatch" winner was Gary Houston who won £80 and Kyle Smith had Gary in The Sweepstake so Kyle took the £25 prize for that!

If you like the sound of all these prizes, you'll love the fact that there's also a rollover Jackpot and also a 9 Ball Break prize too, so get yourself down to Rileys Meadowbank in Edinburgh or catch up with all the news on their Facebook page.

“I am so happy!”

Saturday, 21 April 2012: In a very one-sided final match, Dominic Jentsch (GER) crushed David Alcaide (ESP) with 8:1.

“I feel completely overwhelmed”, said Jentsch after the final.
“This is my first Euro-Tour victory; my best rank so far was 17th”. The final match can be described with a few words: Jentsch was simply too dominating for Alcaide and left no chance for the strong Spaniard.

Whatever aspect of the game is taken, Jentsch was better. His break shot, his safety play, his pocketing skills… his performance in this final was second to none. When asked what he thinks it is that makes him dominate his opponents so clearly, he replied: “I always try to do my best. I think from shot to shot and get the best out of me.” “Sometimes you get momentum, sometimes you don’t. I practice very hard and recently I get awarded for all my efforts.”

Souquet, Melling and Peach also on their way home

Friday, 20 April 2012: In a high class entertaining match, Darren Appleton (GBR) defeated Mario He (AUT) with 8:6.

Both players are considered to be “heavyweights” in the European pool scene. Mario He just won the European crown in 8-ball, while Darren Appleton has won the US Open in Chesapeake in October last year. The contestants performed on a high level. No wonder, after twelve racks the score was 6:6. As a summary so far it could be seen that Appleton seemed to win his break game more easy than He. The Austrian had to struggle quite some time and also benefitted from some minor mistakes that Appleton had played. In the 13th rack, Appleton played a “monster break shot”, three balls went down, and everything was in the open with the cue ball lying in a good position for the 1-ball.

Olympic-Online Baltic Pool League 2012 begins in Tartu, Estonia!

After a huge success in 2011 the organisers, sponsors and pool clubs have decided to continue the Olympic-Online Baltic Pool League for many years.

The 2012 season begins in new venue, Baribal Poolclub in Tartu, Estonia and the game is 9-ball. All the tables will have brand new cloth and Ultimate Breakracks are used in order to give as similar break as possible for each break shot. In 2012 each stage will have a raffle during which different prizes from our sponsors like Mezz Cues and Kamui Tips are given away. The major step forward is to have a livestream from each event in order to bring this great event to each home. The organisers are happy to announce that this year many last year sponsors as well as some new ones are contributing to the event. Organisers would like to thank main sponsor Olympic-Onine and other sponsors like Mezz Cues, Kamui Tips, Entry Poolclub, Baribal Poolclub, Champions Club, Strachan Super Pro Cloth, Aveiras Reklamos Agentura, Barclay Hotel, Dino Sport, Tieto and all other sponsors and volunteers that make this event possible. A great gratitude goes out to all the media partners, like Pro9.co.uk, DELFI, all related national federations, European Billiard Council to name some.

Organisers of the Olympic-Online Baltic Pool League are very optimistic of another season and are convinced that the athletes feel the same.

THE chasing pack can smell blood as women’s snooker star Reanne Evans bids to end a nightmare season with a record eighth successive world title

Cambridge Snooker Centre hosts the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association’s World Championships, which start on Friday, April 20.

Seven-time champion Evans saw her record 90-match winning streak ended by Maria Catalano in the Northern Championship back in September.

Although the 26-year-old from Dudley, West Midlands , returned to winning ways in the UK Championship, she missed the next two events after being struck down by pleurisy.

And Catalano, now ranked number one, inflicted another defeat on Evans, who has dropped to number three, in the preliminary round of the Connie Gough Memorial.

Winner of three ranking tournaments this season, Catalano, 29, also from Dudley, must see 2012 as her best chance of fulfilling her long-held dream of a first world title.

Limited to 2 per customer from The Pro Shop - New Kamui 1.21 Chalk

Advertisements

New Kamui 1.21 Chalk

Now officially launched in Europe and already selling well from the first day of availability, Kamui 1.21 Chalk, the new chalk from Kamui is finally available to buy from Europe's favourite pool supplier The Pro Shop.

This new compound has a harder consistency than the Kamui 0.98 version, reducing compound transfer to the cue ball and providing increased longevity, whilst consistently delivering superior playability, this new chalk is now officially launched in Europe.

We've only recently received a new delivery from Japan, and both the softer, more grippy Kamui 0.98 and the new, harder compound Kamui 1.21 Chalk are already selling so strongly we've had to introduce a limit of two of each type per customer.
