European players invited once again to Sweden

Britain's favourite Indian pool player Raj Hundal has been mightily successful at this event, winning it in 2009 and in 2010 with back to back wins over Marcus Chamat in both finals. In 2011 Hundal made the final match again, but was denied his hat-trick of victories as he lost to Dragon Promotions partner Rodney Morris with an 11-5 scoreline.

Hosted by Sweden's Marcus Chamat, this is always a popular event, and as well as featuring some interesting "Special Event" extras, it also draws some very tasty talent. Last year, the likes of Niels Feijen, Tony Drago, Mika Immonen, and Estonia's Dennis Grabe attended. This year, Torbjörn Blomdahl and Ewa Mataya Lawrence have already signed up, and now you are invited too!

Melling maintains top spot

CHRIS MELLING maintained his grip on the 2012 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup European rankings with a semi-final finish at the recent Bosnian Open on the Euro Tour. The Englishman, who topped the rankings for last year's event, has opened up a 12 point lead over second placed Nick van den Berg, another top finisher from last year.

The European Mosconi Cup Ranking consists of 11 events – six Euro Tour events and five "World" events. The "World" events will carry approximately 50% more points due to the international strength of the field.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event will be allocated points and at the conclusion, after the 2012 US Open, the top two players will automatically gain entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

Players of all standards are invited to play in this handicapped event

At last someone has decided to reward the average player with an opportunity to play alongside the most adored player in the world. Yes, the clever folk organising the Bergen Open have invited Efren Reyes, and have decided to give everyone an equal chance of fame and glory, by evening the playing field with a significant handicap system.

Best of all, it's a completely open event, so everyone, men and women, professional and amateur, yes everyone in Europe is invited to register for a chance to play alongside "The Magician" Efren "Bata" Reyes, and maybe even have a chance of playing the great man himself.

Fantastic opportunities like this don't come along every day, and every year, Efren gets closer and closer to retirement age, so contact the organisers now, and make sure you get a chance to play in the Bergen Open.

Players are invited to attend the Bunny International Open

What an absolutely delightful pool tournament poster! I have no idea why this tournament is called the "Bunny" Open - could it be a reference to Easter? It certainly looks like it. What I DO know, is that this is a long running tournament in Austria with a legendary friendly atmosphere and fabulous playing conditions at Patrick's Canadian Taverne - it's called "The Bunny International Open" and the prize fund is quite inviting too!

"I had nothing to lose!"
Albin Ouschan wins the first Dynamic Euro-Tour stop in 2012

Saturday, 03 March 2012: In the final of the Dynamic Bosnia & Herzegovina Open 2012, Albin Ouschan (AUT) defeated Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with 9:3.

It was a perfect beginning for Ouschan. He won the first rack, broke and ran the second and fired the 9-ball over one rail to take a quick 3:0 lead over Jungo. Then the intensity of the match went down a bit and luck became a factor. In the 8th rack, Ouschan was already leading 5:2. He had just pocketed the 9-ball over the 2-ball. Then, a safety battle started when Jungo left a small edge of the 2-ball for Ouschan. The Austrian pocketed the 2-ball and fluked the 9-ball in, gaining a 6:2 lead over Jungo. “Fortunately, I had a bit more luck than Dimitri”, said a modest Albin Ouschan after the final match.

The rest of the match did not see much more from the Swiss contestant. He broke and ran another rack but he was not able to stop Ouschan’s roll. He made a grave mistake in the 10th rack where he missed an easy 7-ball. In order to get his thoughts and his game together, Jungo took a time out after that rack. But it did not help. He came out dry on his own break and Ouschan took it after winning an intensive safety battle.

That brought Ouschan on the hill, 8:3. The final rack was also determined by safety play from both players with Ouschan being the winner in the end, taking the match with 9:3.

CHIPPER BEATS THE FIELD FOR MAIDEN VICTORY

The final of this year’s Midlands Classic pitted two players together with entirely different background – one perennial face on the GB 9 Ball Tour in Manchester’s James Kay, alongside a relative newcomer to the sport in Norwich’s Shaun Chipperfield. Both players were seeded inside the top 32 coming into this event and so started their campaigns in the last 64.

Given the drama in the opening two competitions, every single player was eager to hit the ground running and push on in the main event, with once again some staggering results coming throughout the two days’ play. As with Paul Taylor in the Challenge Cup against Mark Shepherd, Shaun Storry secured one of the biggest wins ever seen on the tour, coming back from 8-2 down to eliminate Challenge Cup champion Craig Waddingham 9 racks to 8.

Waddingham explained after the match that there’s very little he could have done to stop defeat. “I missed one ball in the whole match. It was my break that let me down I gave Shaun too many chances after them and ultimately that cost me dearly”.

Kay’s route to the final started in the best possible way, handing Tom Staveley a donut with a convincing 9-0. His next two triumphs were much more challenging, but he came through a thrilling 9-8 encounter against Belfast’s Mark McDonald before eliminating Adam Benn Smith 9 racks to 6 to reach the quarter finals. Waiting for him there was the daunting prospect of British number 1 Imran Majid, but a cool and collected Kay held his nerve to pull of a tremendous 9-7 victory and send the Londoner home. After taking out one of the most feared names on the tour, he then came up against another one at the semi-final stage in the form of Daryl Peach. The fact that each of the four opening racks resulted in break and runs showed the class both players showed to get to this stage. It was Kay who made it to the finish line first, however, with a final score of 9-8 ending a match of remendous quality and ensuring Kay of his first GB9 final since The Paul Medati Trophy in April 2010.

Jungo over Cohen

Drago sends Souquet to the loser’s side

Thursday, 01 March 2012: In the 2nd winner’s round, Dimitri Jungo (SUI) creamed Stephan Cohen (nothing) with 9:7.

Jungo definitely had the better start in the match. The table opened up in his favour and he was able to benefit from that. He succeeded in achieving a comfortable 5:1 and 6:3 lead over Cohen. Then, the French hopeful got better into stroke and he tied the match at 6:6 by playing solid and very focused. Then the tide turned against him again and went in favour of Jungo. The winner of last year’s Dynamic German Open Euro-Tour in Brandenburg went ahead 7:6. Cohen answered and tied the match again, 7:7. It was again Jungo to go in front and achieving an 8:7 lead over Cohen. He put a lot of pressure on Cohen and in end won the match with 9:7. Cohen will have to go through the loser’s side of the field while Jungo is still on track on the winner’s side.
