"I had nothing to lose!"
Albin Ouschan wins the first Dynamic Euro-Tour stop in 2012

Saturday, 03 March 2012: In the final of the Dynamic Bosnia & Herzegovina Open 2012, Albin Ouschan (AUT) defeated Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with 9:3.

It was a perfect beginning for Ouschan. He won the first rack, broke and ran the second and fired the 9-ball over one rail to take a quick 3:0 lead over Jungo. Then the intensity of the match went down a bit and luck became a factor. In the 8th rack, Ouschan was already leading 5:2. He had just pocketed the 9-ball over the 2-ball. Then, a safety battle started when Jungo left a small edge of the 2-ball for Ouschan. The Austrian pocketed the 2-ball and fluked the 9-ball in, gaining a 6:2 lead over Jungo. “Fortunately, I had a bit more luck than Dimitri”, said a modest Albin Ouschan after the final match.

The rest of the match did not see much more from the Swiss contestant. He broke and ran another rack but he was not able to stop Ouschan’s roll. He made a grave mistake in the 10th rack where he missed an easy 7-ball. In order to get his thoughts and his game together, Jungo took a time out after that rack. But it did not help. He came out dry on his own break and Ouschan took it after winning an intensive safety battle.

That brought Ouschan on the hill, 8:3. The final rack was also determined by safety play from both players with Ouschan being the winner in the end, taking the match with 9:3.

“It is a heck of a feeling to stand here, being the winner”, said Ouschan, “I only wanted to reach the quarter-finals and I would have been happy.” “I had nothing to lose, I played the final, knowing that I have already achieved more than I had ever expected”. Ouschan has been nominated to be the Austrian Team captain at this event for the first time. He has developed quite a bit, being more mature these days.

“I have done some mental work which helped me at least 50% today. I want to be a role model for the younger players in Austria.” One of the next stops of the Dynamic Euro-Tour will be in Ouschan’s home country, Austria. When asked whether the winner of that tournament will have the name Ouschan, he smiled and said: “Tough question. You get a lot of pressure in your home country. But I will do my best to satisfy the people’s expectations and maybe the winner is called Ouschan and maybe his first name begins with an ‘A’.”

Lady Luck is not Dutch today!
Jungo destroyed van den Berg

Saturday, 03 March 2012: In another one-sided semi-final match, Dimitri Jungo (SUI) eliminated Nick van den Berg (NED) with 9:3.

‘Nick van den Berg never found his break’ could be another headline for this article. In six own breakshots he came dry three times and scratched twice. He had only one good break in the match. Jungo broke relatively solid and benefitted from that, gaining a 7:1 advantage over van den Berg. The Dutch did not get into the game and also did not play up to his top performance. Before the 9th rack, van den Berg took a time out and came back to the table, ready to change something. Jungo broke powerful but got no position for the 1-ball.

A safety battle evolved and van den Berg came out of that on top of Jungo. He won the rack, making the score 2:7. Then the drama unfolded. Van den Berg broke and had two balls down. He played a brilliant safety and Jungo answered that with a tactical foul. Van den Berg cleared all problems and was on his way when he missed a 6-ball that was more than easy. What a catastrophe for “El Nino”! He shook his head and got into his chair being completely frustrated with the way the match went.

Jungo generally had the balls run in his favour but he also played better than van den Berg since he made less mistakes. In the 11th rack, Jungo broke dry and van den Berg cleared the table, still being mad about himself and about the chances he had not made use of. At a score of 8:3 in favour of Jungo, the final rack could not have been more characteristic. Van den Berg broke and scratched. Jungo lined up a 1-9 combination shot and missed it, but the 9 travelled back to the pocket and dropped! That ended the second semi-final in Sarajevo today.

The final match will be played between Albin Ouschan and Dimitri Jungo at 19:00 local time.

Ouschan in the Final
Hard times for Melling

Saturday, 03 March 2012: In the first semi-final match of the Dynamic Bosnia & Herzegovina Open, Albin Ouschan (AUT) defeated Chris Melling with 9:5.

The match was tough for Melling at all times. He seemed to struggle with the conditions in the TV arena since he did not perform by far the way one would have expected him to. On the other hand, Ouschan was playing smooth and easy. He had nothing to lose. When asked about him defeating Appleton and Melling in a row after the match, he replied “I would have been happy to become 5th in this tournament.” He adapted to the playing conditions and simply played his game and benefitted from Melling’s mistakes. And there were quite a few of them. He played a foul shot in the 9th rack with the score being 3:6 for Ouschan already. He fouled again in the 11th rack and gave his opponent to reach the hill which Ouschan did.

At a score of 8:3 in favour of the Austrian, Melling tried to launch a comeback and things looked quite promising for him. Until the 14th rack came along. Melling broke but had no ball down. Ouschan found himself without a shot at the 1-ball so he played a safety shot. Melling replied that with another safety shot nut it was not executed well. Ouschan managed to pocket a ball off Melling’s safety and finished the rack, the match and Melling, winning 9:5.

The next semi-final will be played between Nick van den Berg (NED) and Dimitri Jungo (SUI) at 16:30 local time.

Jungo takes out a weak Muratore
Semi-final matches all set

Saturday, 03 March 2012: Last year’s tournament winner from Brandenburg, Dimitri Jungo (SUI) took out Bruno Muratore (ITA) clearly with 9:4.

It has never been the match of Bruno Muratore. That showed from the very first rack. Muratore should have won it but he made an avoidable mistake. In the second rack, Muratore missed the 8-ball. Instead of leading 2:0 he was 0:2 down. That obviously made him struggle. He could not find his rhythm while Jungo played solid and did not commit severe mistakes. In the 5th rack, Muratore was again on the 8-ball but fell in a position much too straight to get an angle for the 9-ball. He again missed the 8-ball and trailed 1:4, mainly because of his own mistakes.

Jungo was focussed at all times and showed no emotions. He found his game and saw is opponent struggle which even encouraged him more. Muratore’s losing streak continued. Trailing 3:5, he could move up to Jungo but again missed an easy 6-ball. Everything went against the Italian. He played bad and Jungo played strong. In the 13th rack, Jungo broke the 9-ball and ended a pretty one-sided match, winning 9:4.

Another remarkable result from the quarter-final session is that Albin Ouschan (AUT) ended the hopes of favoured US-Open Champion Darren Appleton (GBR) with a clear 9:4.

earlier today, in the round of the last 16 players Nick van den Berg (NED) terminated Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) in a tough match with 9:7. In an all British clash, youngster Phil Burford dismissed Imran Majid with 9:5.

The semi-finals will be played at 14:30 (Melling v Ouschan) and 16:00 (vd Berg v Jungo).

Imran Majid (GBR) - Photo: EPBF/AMM

“Maharaja" Majid terminates “The Terminator” Feijen
Ups and downs on the main table in Sarajevo

Saturday, 03 March 2012: Imran Majid (GBR) was triumphant with 9:6 over Niels Feijen (NED).

The match was characterized by two major turning points. Majid had the better start and took a quick 4:1 lead over Feijen. In the 6th rack, he should have made the score 5:1 in his favour but he missed and easy 7-ball. That was the first turning point of the match. Feijen accepted the gift and took a time out in order to get his game together. He came back after two minutes and seemed to be completely changed. He played much more confident and got into stroke much better. He even managed to gain a 5:4 lead over Majid who seemed to struggle at the time. Then, Majid got back into the game, taking two racks to advance over Feijen with 6:5. In the 12th rack, the second turning point happened.

Feijen had won a safety battle and played a negligent position from the 8-ball which left him a difficult but makeable shot on the 9-ball. He missed the 9-ball. Instead of 6:6, the score was now 7:5 in favour of “The Maharaja”.

The end of the match unfolded as a maximum penalty for Feijen. He broke the 13th rack, no ball went in and the layout was perfect for Majid who ran the rack, getting on the hill 8:5. Then, with his own break shot coming up, Majid broke perfectly and ran the rack, winning the match 9:5, leaving a frustrated Niels Feijen.

The round of the last 16 players starts on Saturday, March 3rd, at 10:00 local time.

Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) - Photo: EPBF/AMM

Stepanov Takes His Chance - Dynamic Sarajevo Open down to 32 players

Friday, 02 March 2012: Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) has defeated “Napoleon” Marcus Chamat (SWE) with 9:7 at the main table #24.

Both players have many things in common: They are around for a long time, are experienced and already have some titles under their belt. So it was no surprise that it was a very tight match between the two. As the encounter unfolded, both players took their chances and never allowed the other one to gain an advantage. It was either Stepanov or Chamat leading with one rack, not more. That changed in the 14th rack. Stepanov broke and pocketed the 1-ball. He missed the 2-ball but left a difficult shot for Chama who answered that with a good safety shot.

Stepanov then hit the 2-ball but left a shot for Chamat. So Napoleon had the first chance in that rack. But he missed a makeable shot and Stepanov went to the table, cold as ice and ran the rack, taking an 8:6 lead over Chamat. The pressure for Marcus was on. However, he answered that with an excellent break and run, made the score 8:7 for Stepanov and handed the pressure back to the Russian. Stepanov accepted the challenge and played a superb break and run himself. 9:7 was the final score in favour of Stepanov.

Other notable results include Ortmann ousting Gray with 9:7 in the 4th loser’s round. Andreas Gerwen (SWE), a regular on the Euro-Tour, eliminated “The Kaiser” Ralf Souquet (GER) with 9:8 in the same round. Karol Skowerski (POL) ended the hopes of 10-ball World Champion Huidji See (NED) with 9:6. Croatian Karlo Dalmatin sent Sandor Tot (SRB) home, winning 9:7 over him.

The draw for the final round today will be done after the conclusion of the current round. At 21:00 local time, 32 remaining players will battle in a single elimination format for their survival in the event.

Sandor Tot (SRB) (Photo: EPBF/AMM)

Tot eliminates He - Second day in Sarajevo starts with loser’s bracket matches

Friday, 02 March 2012: In a thrilling encounter, Sandor Tot (SRB) ousted Mario He (AUT) with 9:7.

The match was a close battle at any stage. Both players played at equal strength. They both committed some mistakes and did not really perform to their top level. No wonder that none of the two was able to gain a clear advantage over the other.

In the 9th rack, at a score of 4:4, Tot pocketed the 9-ball and let the cue ball travel into the pocket, using to much backspin. “I would always play the shot that way” Tot said after the match, “I don’t like slow rolling the balls in. It’s just not my style”.

Instead of being up 5:4, Tot was now trailing with the same result. But that did not destroy his match. It looked like he continued being completely unimpressed by his fatal mistake. In the 11th rack, He lost the cue ball in a very unlucky way and somehow “gave” the rack back to Tot.

The score then was 6:6. Tot broke but had a dry break shot with He getting to the table. He ran the table which was spread open nicely and took a 7:6 advantage over Tot. But then the Serbian played extremely strong. He ran two racks in a row, making the score 8:7 in his favour. In the 16th rack, He broke, had three balls down and a good shot at the 2-ball. But he missed it. That was the end for him in that match. Tot ran out and won the match with 9:7.

Other notable results include Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) losing 8:9 to Carlo Dalmatin (CRO). Steve Leisen (LUX) terminated the hopes of his teammate from Trier, Marko Vogel (GER) with 9:7. Daryl Peach (GBR) ousted Ivica Putnik (CRO) just with 9:8.
