Mark Gray (GBR), the winner of the Dynamic Treviso Open

Dramatic finish in the final Euro-Tour tournament for 2011

Saturday, 03 December 2011: In a gripping final match, Mark Gray (GBR) defeated David Alcaide (ESP) by an eyelash with 9:8.

In the early stage of the match, both players did not perform very well. They seemed to not feel comfortable at the TV arena table. Especially Alcaide suffered then. After eight racks being played, Alcaide could have been leading 6:2, but since he missed a 9-ball and scratched on another 7-ball the score was tied at 4:4.

In the 9th rack, Gray runs all balls until he comes to the 7-ball. He leaves the 7-ball hanging over a pocket and Alcaide accepts the gift to take a 5:4 lead in the match. At that time, the lead for Alcaide was definitely justified.

As the match continued, both players enhanced their performance and the standard of the match got really high. No more errors were made and Alcaide managed to get on the hill first, taking an 8:6 lead over Gray. In the 15th rack, Alcaide breaks the rack and finds the cue ball behind a cluster of balls with no chance to hit the 1-ball. Since it was a dry break, Gray passed the inning back to Alcaide.

The Spaniard played a push out which Gray also passed back. A safety battle evolved where Gray had the better end on his side, making the score 8:7. At that time, Mark Gray took a time out. The venue was packed with people and the tension was almost physical.

On Top Of The World

Dennis Orcullo, who once was an itinerant fisherman in a remote and poor part of the Philippines, has now reached the pinnacle of the pool world by being named the World Pool and Billiard Association(WPA) 2011 Player of the Year.

The 32 year old Orcullo racked up a total of 2570 points in 8 WPA ranking events over the course of the year to grab the top spot in the world rankings. Japans Yukio Akagariyama, who won the World 9-ball Championship in Qatar in June, came in second with 2382 points. Englands Darren Appleton, who won his second straight US Open title in October, finished in third with 2256 points. The Philippines Ronnie Alcano landed in fourth with 2063 points.

Thats very good news, Orcullo said when informed hed been named the 2011 WPA Player of the Year. Im very happy and its a big honor for the Philippines. Hopefully I can continue to play my best in 2012.

The WPA Player of the Year honors are based on the total number of ranking points each player accumulates throughout the calendar year. In 2011, the men competed in 8 different WPA ranking events. Players receive points based on their order of finish in each event. The amount of ranking points available in each event varies, depending on the size of the field and prize fund.

David Alcaide - Spain

Alcaide finishes Petroni

Friday, 02 December 2011: In a classic encounter of two players who know each other for a long time, David Alcaide (ESP) finished Fabio Petroni (ITA) with 9:4.

The match started with both players playing not on their A-game. They made unnecessary mistakes and benefitted from each others errors. In the 5th rack, when the score was tied at 2:2, things changed for Alcaide. He played better and Petroni got really unlucky with some shots and positions. Though Petroni was trying hard to satisfy the expectations of his home crowd, Alcaide took rack after rack off Petroni and got into a comfortable 6:2 lead.

Team USA - Mike Dechaine

Dechaine: The proudest moment of my life

WITH THE 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup fast approaching, one of two debutants in the event, Rhode Islands Mike Dechaine, looks ahead to the tournament and what it means to be representing the USA in pools toughest proposition.

Dechaine has enjoyed a stellar year that saw him win the Ultimate 10 Ball event and enjoy a host of high finishes that eventually saw him finish third in the US Mosconi Rankings.

Words really can't describe how I feel - all I can do is go out there and try to give a 100%, said Dechaine.

I am sure I will be a little overwhelmed as well, but that should wear off after day four! It should be fun and I feel proud, honored, excited, and maybe even a little scared. This is the big leagues and these are the best players in the world.

No chance for Italian Top player

Thursday, 01 December 2011: Serge Das (BEL) overpowered Bruno Muratore (ITA) and won with 9:6.

The match started out very one-sided. Muratore seemed not to get a foot on the floor while Das was playing very well. It took 8 racks for Muratore to begin playing a bit better. At that time, the score was already 6:1 in favour of the Belgian Champion. Though Muratore tried his best, it was already too late for that match. The best he could do was tightening the match to 6:7. Then Das showed no mercy for Muratore and took the next two racks, winning the match 9:6.

Team Europe Captain - Johan Ruijsink

Ruijsink: We are on a mission...

EURO CAPTAIN Johan Ruijsink believes his team are on a mission to retain the 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup when the might of the American and European pool worlds collide at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas from the 8th to 11th December.

Ruijsink will be making his fourth appearance at the helm of Team Europe and following on from a tied match in 2006 and wins in 2007 and last year, his belief is unshakeable.

It is going to be tough but the team are all great players, they all know how to prepare for events, they have the same goal and mission and because they see each other all year long they respect each other greatly, he said.

And believe me on one thing; every player is glad that the other European players are on their team and not on the American side. We would definitely rather play with, than against each other.

Ruijsink, 45, is credited with helping turn around European fortunes in the event following five barren years without a win. However, for him, that is history.
