PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool 2011 The Block Atrium SM North EDSA Quezon City Manila Philippines www.partypoker.net www.matchroompool.com - World Cup of Pool - Live Text Commentary
Tuesday-Sunday 6-11 September 2011
Team Philippines B - Efren Reyes & Francisco Bustamante Reyes & Bustamante through to quarters
TWO-TIME PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool winners Philippines B – Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante – comfortably progressed to the last eight of this year’s competition following their 8-5 victory over India at the Block Atrium at the SM Mall North in Quezon City, Manila.
The Indian pair of Raj ‘the Hitman’ Hundal and Amar ‘AK47’ Kang, resplendent in the winning shirts in the ‘best dressed’ competition, were once again lead into the arena by a glamourous model scattering rose petals ahead of them.
The crowd always play a part in the success of the Filipino pair but the Indian duo quietened them down considerably as they levelled the match at 4-4. That put all the pressure on the Filipinos, but they responded superbly as they picked up the pace to out play their opponents for the win.
The Indians acquitted themselves well and bearing in mind that Kang had never played on TV before, they were a credit to their nation.
“We got lucky again,” said Reyes, echoing his regular catchphrase but the truth is that there was plenty of skill and shot-making and their likely quarter-final opponents, Germany, will have their hands full on Saturday.
The PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool features 32 two-player teams representing 31 nations – hosts Philippines have two sides. The total prize-fund is $250,000 with $60,000 going to the winning pair.

MC John McDonald with Team Philippines A - Dennis Orcollo & Ronnie Alcano Orcollo/Alcano through as USA tumbles out
TEAM USA, sporting the most garish pairs of strides this side of John Daly, were shocked out of the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as they went down to the wire with Singapore and came out second best at the SM Mall North in Manila.
Their exit followed on from the dismissal of England at the hands of Estonia, China by the Swiss and Holland by the Thais to leave the event wide open.

Francisco Bustamante and Efren Reyes - Team Philippines B Home town heroes win through
2006 and 2009 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool Champions Philippines B, comprised of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, made their way into the last 16 of this year’s event with an 8-4 victory over plucky debutants Kuwait at the SM Mall North in Manila.
Nobody gave the Kuwait pair of Khaled Al Mutaira and Omar Al Shaheen any kind of hope but they did themselves proud, sticking with the Filipino pair in the early stages before succumbing down the home stretch.
Both sides wore snappy outfits based on their national flags, but it was the home side that the packed crowd had come to see. As predicted the Philippines started well and took the first two racks fairly quickly.
As huge underdogs, the Kuwaiti duo of Al Mutaira and Al Shaheen though were under no pressure at all, and that showed as they won the next two to silence the crowd.
The Philippines won the next two to restore their lead but the game Kuwaiti pair took the next to leave it poised at 4-3. A cracking long pot in the next from Bustamante set the Philippines on their way to taking the rack as the score stood at 5-3.

Pro9 Robin, you must have the most incredible "rags to riches" biography of all pool players, how old were you when you started playing pool. Why pool, and not some other game? Do you think you had a natural gift, or did you have some urgent need to compete and win, or did you just enjoy playing so much that you got so good?
Robin "As a kid, I was a natural athlete with great eye-hand coordination & always involved in sports in school. Down the street from where we lived was a place called Westminster Family Billiards. As a young girl sneaking up on my 13th birthday, I thought this would be a great place to meet some cute guys, so one day I wandered in. Self-conscious & trying to blend in with the crowd, I picked up a cue, fell in love with the game & the rest is history! Being a natural, I never really had any formal instruction – I just watched the other players & tried to copy what they did – spending hundreds of hours on the table. I always had a desire to win – it didn’t matter at what…my goal was always to WIN. I ate, slept & drank pool in my teenage years so I had hours & hours of practice under my belt before I ever entered the pro arena. "

 | 2011 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters - Souquet claims Masters |
PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters SM City North EDSA Mall Metro Manila Philippines www.partypoker.net www.matchroompool.com - World Pool Masters - Twitter
Saturday-Monday 3-5 September 2011
Ralf Souquet - Germany Souquet claims sixth Masters crown
GERMANY’S RALF SOUQUET claimed his sixth PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters title as he defeated the Philippines’ Dennis Orcollo in front of a packed house at the SM Mall North in Quezon City, Manila. The jubilant ‘Kaiser’ screamed with joy as he downed the final 9 ball, as he banished a succession of heart-breaking defeats in the Philippines capital city.
He lost to Ronnie Alcano in the final of the 2006 World Pool Championship in this same city and then he and Thorsten Hohmann were narrowly beaten in the final of the 2009 World Cup of Pool at the hands of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante.
Following on from his recent induction into the BCA Hall of Fame, Souquet, 42, put in two stellar performances today. Earlier he came from 7-4 down to beat Darren Appleton in the semi-final and followed that up by a solid performance to derail Dennis Orcollo who had looked so good over his previous three matches.
"It seems to be my tournament for whatever reason. I've made the final eight times and won six and lost twice. It's not only a dream come true but also the icing on the cake to win it here in the Philippines,” said a delighted Souquet.
"It's the fifth final I've played in the Philippines but the first time I've won one, which makes it all the more satisfying!”
The match itself was tight is the early stages and at 3-3 it was all to play for. Neither player was making the most of the break before Orcollo nailed one in eighth game to set up a run out and establish a two rack lead at 5-3.

 | 2011 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters - Ex Champs through |
PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters SM City North EDSA Mall Metro Manila Philippines www.partypoker.net www.matchroompool.com - World Pool Masters - Twitter
Saturday-Monday 3-5 September 2011
Three Ex Champs through to semis
FIVE TIMES Masters Champion Ralf Souquet is on course to capture a record-busting sixth crown as he came through a tight match to dispose of local hope Lee Van Corteza at the SM City Mall North in Manila.
Corteza’s exit from the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters means that there is only one Filipino in the last four – Dennis Orcollo – who is highly fancied to lift the title on Monday evening. He may well be facing Souquet though as the German looked his imperious best at times.
Corteza stuck with him though as the crowd swelled with each passing rack, and at 4-4 it was anybody’s match. They both made errors in the next four racks as they traded games to leave the score poised at 6-6.
The Filipino made a jump shot onto the pink 4 in the next but left the bank shot which Souquet converted and ran the rack to reach the hill. The German composed himself to run out the next and seal a fine victory.
"It would be a dream come true to win the Masters for the sixth time and the last time was back in 2006. I've won it five times but that doesn't make me the favourite, it just means I have the experience of winning it but I still have to win another two matches," said Souquet.

New Brunswick, New Jersey- Germany once again reigns supreme in straight pool as Thorsten Hohmann dominated the 71st World Tournament of 14.1. USA's Mike Davis had no answer for Hohmann's precision game and knowledge of 14.1. Both players played their very first match of the event against each other, and met once again in the very end. The matches went longer than expected, and lasted to 3:00am before finished. But a large number of die hard fans stayed till the very end including for the closing ceremonies. "I really say thanks to the fans who stayed here to watch me play to the very end", said Hohmann in his appreciation for the fans. "There's no fans in the world like the ones that come to the World Tournament of 14.1 each year. I recognize 90% of them each year because they love the event and keep coming back", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions.

The fourth and penultimate pro tour event for the 2011 season got underway as the GB9 Southern Masters took centre stage at the Barceló Hotel in Daventry.
Initially, the winners were all from the North as Blackpool's Daryl Peach triumphed in a nail-bitingly close hill-hill battle with Scotland's Jayson Shaw, winning by the narrowest of margins in the Pro Cup event in Daventry.
In the Challenge Division, Eric Dockerty collected his first GB9 Cup with a relatively comfortable 9-5 win over former Challenge supremo Damian Massey.
Competition continued Sunday to determine the GB9 Southern Masters Champion as the main event played to a conclusion. The title could have been anyone's with the absence of big guns like Chris Melling, Darren Appleton and Tony Drago all currently competing in Manila at the World Pool Masters, but it was the very capable Kevin Uzzell who took the most prestigious honour of the weekend.
Uzzell's closest shave of the weekend occurred early on in the Last 32 of the single elimination stage when Andy Barnett took him to the limit with a hill-hill match, but from there onwards it was relatively plain sailing, and Uzzell cruised to a strong 11-4 victory over Scotland's Jayson Shaw in the final.
