2011 EVENT 4 - GB9 SOUTHERN MASTERS

GB9 returns with another bang as the summer season draws to a close and, as the nights draw longer once again, the 2011 Southern Masters comes to the Barceló Hotel in Daventry.

This season's penultimate event is already upon us. Although few players would complain, this event seems to have come around extremely quickly, giving players precious little time to hone their game to the standard GB9 has come to demand. Indeed, at only 26 days after the Northern Masters came to a close this is the shortest ever gap between two individual tournament weekends in almost four years of the GB 9 Ball Tour. Given the rapid succession of the two tournaments, players may not realise at first that opportunities to score vital ranking points are wearing very thin now for the 2011 season, so it is more important than ever for all players to be at the peak of their game.

Hundal tips India to be a force in Manila

RAJ Hundal believes India will be the surprise packages of the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool.

The sixth staging of the World Cup will begin on Tuesday, September 6 and India have failed to win a match in the five previous years.

However, Hundal believes himself and new team-mate Amar Kang will cause a few surprises, starting with a victory over the 12th seeded Finland side that includes former World Champion Mika Immonen.

“This is the first World Cup where India have got two through-and-through pool players,” said Hundal at a press conference to launch the World Cup and the World Pool Masters.

“The partner I had before (Dharminder Singh Lilly) is a lovely guy and a great player but didn’t spend all year playing pool and also concentrated on other games like snooker and billiards.

“I’m confident if I don’t play at my best then we can still win and he (Amar) can carry me. But if we both play well then we’re going to take some beating. I’m definitely confident.

“Against Finland the bookmakers may make them the favourites but I don’t see it that way.”

Williams Takes Guildford Glory

Mark Williams got his 2011 PartyCasino.com Premier League campaign off to the perfect start by winning event two at the Guildford Spectrum on Thursday night.

The World No 1 beat Shaun Murphy 3-1 in the final to take a maximum six points and join fellow Welshman Matthew Stevens at the top of the table.

Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood, a close friend of Ronnie O'Sullivan and Jimmy White, turned up to watch the action, joined by glamorous Brazilian girlfriend Ana Araujo. But Wood couldn't get much satisfaction from the performances of O'Sullivan and White as the Londoners were beaten in the semi-finals.

"I'm really pleased to get off to a good start and to play well," said Williams. "It wasn't easy and there were a few close frames. I nicked a couple of frames that Shaun should have won. It's easy when you're making big breaks but you've got to take the close frames as well.

"I'm off to China for the Shanghai Masters tomorrow so it's nice to get a win under my belt and get some more confidence. Hopefully I can keep it going and have a good run."

Bence Varga - Hungary

“I love to play with a high risk”

Friday, 02 September 2011: In a match that could not get any more exciting and thrilling, Bence Varga (HUN) defeated qualifier Radostin Dimov (BUL) with 11:10.

On paper, the match looked like plain sailing for Bence Varga who is the reigning straight pool European Champion in the juniors division. And that is only one of the four titles that the 17-year-old boy from Hungary has collected so far. His opponent has made it to the tournament via the qualification event and was more or less a surprise to be found in the quarter-final match. But sometimes statistics are proven wrong… Dimov demonstrated in a very impressive way that he is hungry for a title. He played with so much self confidence that the spectators felt the pressure that he was able to put on Varga. “The match was not easy at all for me since my opponent played so strong”, admitted Varga after the match. As the match went along, both players tried to escape from the other’s grip and get a small advantage over the opponent but it did not work out for neither of them. Varga as well as Dimov stuck to the opponent like a limpet, not allowing any big lead to happen. So it was no wonder that the score was still tight as the match came to the final stage. Varga had a 9:8 lead over Dimov but surprisingly, it was the Bulgarian player to get to the hill first, leading 10:9 over Varga. In the 20th rack, Dimov had the break. He pocketed two balls and scratched unluckily since the cue ball was kicked in the corner pocket by an object ball. Varga took his time and ran the rack, tying the match at 10:10.

At that point in time the tension was so real it could almost be physically felt. The final rack was opened by Varga. He pocketed two balls but had no position on the 1-ball. Several safety shots were exchanged until Dimov played a foul shot because the cue ball scratched again. Varga played another good safe where Dimov could not find the right answer for. In the end, Varga ran the final rack and ousted Dimov 11:10. When asked about his sometimes risky shots, Varga mentioned: “I like the tough shots. I’d rather play a bank shot or a combination instead of a safety shot”. However, it worked for him this time. “I am so happy to belong to the best four junior players in the World”, said Varga, “now I must focus for my semi-final match tomorrow against Konrad Piekarski from Poland”.

Melling a certainty as four vie for remaining spots

CHRIS MELLING now looks hard to back against for a berth on the 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup European side as he now leads the pack by a huge 36 point margin following last weekend's German Open. With just two events to go it would take a set of miracle results to displace the likeable Yorkshireman, who is having the season of his life.

A quarter-final finish at the weekend on the Euro Tour cemented Melling's position at the top of the pack as many of the contenders fell by the wayside. Eventual tournament winner Dimitri Jungo of Switzerland bagged 20 points but was too far down the list for it to have a significant impact.

However, behind Melling there are four players within five points of each other, all chasing the other two automatic spots...

An American Will Make the Finals: Ortmann Ousted by Williams

The USA will make the finals of the World Tournament of 14.1. Guaranteed. For the first time in over twenty years, an American will have a shot at the title that has been dominated by Europeans in modern times. And on the other side of the coin, a foreign player will also be guaranteed in the finals. Philippines, Germany, and the USA.

Johnny Archer came back on Mika Immonen to keep the Finn at a 9th place finish. Archer won the match 200-156. Steve Lipsky earlier defeated former World 14.1 winner Stephan Cohen of France and then defeated fellow New Yorker Tony Robles 200-110.

The big story of the day was the elimination of defending World Champion Oliver Ortmann. Ortmann has been the most decorated 14.1 player in the new millenium and the favorite to win this year. He eliminated Japanese champ Kunihiko Takahashi with a 120 ball run. But against Williams he could not get any runs going. Williams didn't play spectacular, but played steady. In the end, Williams capitalized on Ortmann's final mistake and won 200-151. Williams also handed Ortmann his only loss last year in the double elimination stage, but Ortmann still won the event.

"I had mixed emotions before the match. The promoter part of me wants Oliver to advance because the fans want to watch him. Including me!" explained Williams. "But I'm also a professional and have to do my very best."

Max Eberle eliminated Ray Martin in a one sided affair. But Martin got a round of applause as fans said goodbye to their former World Champion in perhaps his final 14.1 event.

SELBY STORMS TO VICTORY IN GERMANY

Mark Selby clinched his second title of the season as he defeated Mark Davis 4-0 in the final of the Paul Hunter Classic.

The event, the fourth of the Players Tour Championship series, was staged in front of capacity crowds at the Stadthalle Furth in Germany.

More than 240 professionals and amateurs competed and Selby was in thrilling form as he whitewashed Sam Harvey, Rory McLeod, Craig Steadman and Andrew Higginson in his opening four rounds.

He finally lost a frame in his 4-1 quarter-final victory over Stephen Lee but his toughest task came against Ronnie O’Sullivan in the semi-finals when he recovered from 3-1 behind to win 4-3.

In the final Selby, the current world number three, made breaks of 47, 73, 99 and 60 as he stormed to his second win in two months, after winning the invitational Wuxi Classic in China in July.

“I played well all week and although I didn’t always score fantastically, I didn’t give my opponents many chances,” said Leicester-based Selby.

Dimitri Jungo - Switzerland

Serge Das loses second final in a row

In a suspense-packed final match, Dimitri Jungo (SUI) won 8:5 over Serge Das (BEL) and took the title of the Dynamic German Open Euro-Tour 2011.

The start of the match was definitely not according to Das’ liking. Jungo played excellent safety shots while Das was almost always able to come up with a reasonable resafe. However, when the scoreboard showed 3:1 in favour of Jungo, Das pocketed a difficult 10-ball and scratched. Instead of getting closer to Jungo, the score was now 4:1 in favour of the Swiss player. “That was very important for me. I really thought that I would get more momentum going now”, said Jungo, “but instead I gave the lead away too carelessly.”. Not at all being frustrated, Das started an impressive comeback and was able to even tie the match at 4:4. Since both players took very long time for their shots, a shot clock was imposed on the match at that time by the tournament officials. Both players seemed to suffer from that since they started missing easy shots.

“Actually, I like to play with the shot clock since I was always a fast player”, stated Jungo, “however, when you start a match without the clock and then have to adjust to it, you start missing easy shots.” After the 4:4, Jungo took a time out. He came back and benefitted in the next two racks from Das’ mistakes, gaining a 6:4 lead over Das. Again Das tried to come back but this time he was not so successful. When Jungo was on the hill at 7:5, Das broke the balls, made two of them and left a good safety shot for Jungo. Jungo missed and Das was about to run that rack when he left the 9-ball hanging over the pocket. That was the end for him in this event. Jungo potted the remaining two balls and won the match 8:5. He is the Dynamic German Open Champion 2011.
