European Champions Join The Association of Billiard Professionals

GeneralAssociation of Billiard Professionals (ABP)

ABP Board Secretary & Treasurer

European Champions Join The Association of Billiard Professionals

The ABP is uniting with the world’s greatest players, from the Philippines, USA, and now our newest addition includes some of Europe’s finest. The ABP is harnessing the power of the world’s best for a common goal; to improve our sport so that associations, promoters, sponsors and players alike may work in conjunction.

Having the players as a whole is the only way pool players as a group may get things accomplished. With the support of players worldwide, we can make a difference for the future generations, just like other sports have done.

"As a European member of the ABP board, I believe it's great for our sport that these top European names step up and join our forces. And with new European successes Huidji See and Chris Melling, both two great sportsmen, the timing is even better. Seeing the Americans allying with the Europeans along with the Asians makes me very proud. I see a bright future ahead of us," said Mika Immonen, ABP Board Member.

Ralf Souquet adds, " Of course having the pro players together as a group is a very good thing. There are several concerns and issues that must be addressed around the world, and this is the ideal way to handle them."

Lawrenson and Appleton take Challenge and Pro

Matches came to an end late on Sunday evening in everyone's favourite pool venue in the UK, as the GB 9 Ball Tour wound down it's second event of the 2011 season at the excellent Barceló Hotel in Daventry for the third annual Paul Medati Trophy there were just men playing for the main event title.

Previously, on day two, youngster Matthew Lawrenson scooped the Challenge Cup with a strong 9-5 win over Mark Lunn, while Yorkshire's Darren Appleton took the Pro Cup with a quite emphatic 9-2 victory over London's Imran Majid.

On Sunday evening, the main event featuring the full complement of 144 GB 9 Ball Tour players had progressively been whittled down to the two finalists. Yorkshireman Chris Melling, hot on the heels of a splendid $40,000 victory at the China 9 Ball Open was facing the player with the most impressive record on the GB9 tour - London's Imran Majid, and true to form, the match couldn't have been a closer, more nail-biting affair as both players matched each other, virtually rack-for-rack all the way to a thrilling 11-10 victory, earning the title GB9 Paul Medati Trophy champion for Yorkshire's Chris Melling.

JEWEL IN THE DESERT

The center of the pool universe moves to one of the most vibrant places in the Middle East next week, as the World Pool Association’s World 9-Ball Championship gets set to kick off in Doha, Qatar, June 21-July 1.

128 of the finest pool talents from 44 countries will gather at Doha’s Al Sadd Sports Club to contest what is widely considered as one of the most prestigious titles in the sport. The prize fund is $250,000 with $36,000 going to the winner.

The Philippine's Francisco “Django” Bustamante will be back to defend his crown, which he won last year in Doha with a convincing 13-7 over Chinese-Taipei’s Kuo Po Cheng. Prior to the event, the popular Bustamante had long been considered the greatest player to never win a world title. He won his finals match in spectacular fashion by pocketing the 9-ball on the break in the 20th rack to capture the long sought after crown. Just weeks after he won the World 9-Ball Championship in Qatar, Bustamante cemented his legend when he was elected to the Billiards Congress of America Hall of Fame.

This will be the second year in a row that the World 9-Ball Championship will be held in Qatar, the country is pegged to host the tournament through 2014.

Super Melling in Driving Seat

CHRIS MELLING, the latest in a long-line of English 9 ball talent, blasted his way to the top of the 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup European Rankings, following a string of world-class performances to win the China Open in Shanghai last week.

Melling now finds himself a whopping 22 points ahead of his nearest rival Nick Van den Berg, with a 35 point safety net between himself and fourth spot. With the top three players on the list at the conclusion of the 13 event series guaranteed a Mosconi berth, Melling looks a prime candidate for Las Vegas.

“The Mosconi Cup was my aim this year as I watched my pals Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes play last December,” said Melling.

“I thought ‘I want that’; it's the best team event in the world and obviously it's every boys dream to represent USA or Europe. I think I would bring massive amounts of entertainment to the viewers and show how the game can be played.”

In addition, Melling holds No.2 spot on the EPBF Euro Tour Rankings and is presently No.5 on the WPA World Rankings. After years pursuing a career in English 8 Ball, in recent times the 32 year-old Yorkshireman has switched full-time to the American pool.

However, he has some pedigree in 9 ball – as long ago as 2001 he reached the last 16 of the World Pool Championship in Cardiff where he beat the likes of Ramil Gallego, Sandor Tot and Steve Davis along the way.

ENGLAND'S CHRIS MELLING STEAMROLLS CHINESE-TAIPEI'S HSU KAI LUN
TO WIN THE CHINA OPEN 9-BALL

Give Chris Melling an inch, and he takes a mile.

That’s just how Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Kai Lun must feel right now, as the burly Englishman put on one of the most powerful displays of 9-ball pool seen in the professional game in some time, capturing the China Open in an all out rout, 11-3.

Melling won $40,000 and, in the process, declared loud and clear that he will be a force to be reckoned with among an already strong heap of English and European pool players for the foreseeable future.

“That’s the best I’ve ever played,” an ecstatic Melling said moments after lifting the trophy. “I knew I would win the match when I was up 6-2. I knew then it would be tough for him to come back. I was just playing too good.”

Anyone who happened to catch one of Melling’s matches inside the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium yesterday and in the semi-final today could see he was the clear favorite to take the crown. The Englishman, who was twice a world champion in English 8-ball and has only been playing competitive 9-ball for two years, was literally oozing with confidence. Everything about him—the way he walked around the table, his extremely fast play, the way he stared down layouts and especially the audacious way he potted difficult balls and moved the cue ball around—spoke of a man with a winning attitude. He never gave his opponents any breathing room, pounced on the smallest of mistakes and quickly put racks on the board.
