JEWEL IN THE DESERT

The center of the pool universe moves to one of the most vibrant places in the Middle East next week, as the World Pool Association’s World 9-Ball Championship gets set to kick off in Doha, Qatar, June 21-July 1.

128 of the finest pool talents from 44 countries will gather at Doha’s Al Sadd Sports Club to contest what is widely considered as one of the most prestigious titles in the sport. The prize fund is $250,000 with $36,000 going to the winner.

The Philippine's Francisco “Django” Bustamante will be back to defend his crown, which he won last year in Doha with a convincing 13-7 over Chinese-Taipei’s Kuo Po Cheng. Prior to the event, the popular Bustamante had long been considered the greatest player to never win a world title. He won his finals match in spectacular fashion by pocketing the 9-ball on the break in the 20th rack to capture the long sought after crown. Just weeks after he won the World 9-Ball Championship in Qatar, Bustamante cemented his legend when he was elected to the Billiards Congress of America Hall of Fame.

This will be the second year in a row that the World 9-Ball Championship will be held in Qatar, the country is pegged to host the tournament through 2014.
